Alba don't buy that, it looks decidedly mediocre. Cozen you're wrong about "hot in Herre". Dan is right about the playgroup - it rocks. I Love the Almost-identical-to-the-original but somehow 100 times better cover of "Behind the Wheel". That Ralphi Rosario track was new to me too and is pretty great.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 10:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the way you two look after me.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 8 August 2004 10:49 (nineteen years ago) link

the tiga version of 'hot in herre' is beyond awful.

surely you mean "is the best thing ever"?

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:55 (nineteen years ago) link

my god what is it with the love for that song?! someone, somewhere back me up.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:26 (nineteen years ago) link

oh also, the best thing ever obv. = the orig. version of 'hot in herre' (don't quite know if I'm ready to hear that again though. it's been a while.)

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:28 (nineteen years ago) link

no love for Tiga of herre.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 15:08 (nineteen years ago) link

someone, somewhere back me up.

i'm with you. that song makes me feel soiled.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 8 August 2004 15:14 (nineteen years ago) link

"checkinyourreflectionandtellin'yourbestfriend"

Tiga (Ronan), Sunday, 8 August 2004 16:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Stereo MC's DJ Kicks. So funky and unexpected from a beyond-the-grave group. Absolutely my favorite in the series.

harshaw (jube), Sunday, 8 August 2004 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

the kick on tiga's "hot in herre" is loud as hell. it's got those great tweaked cowbell noises that are all over the dfa's remix of "she wants to move". in fact, it's got pretty much the same sort of snap! and pop as the "she wants to move" remix. so what's the problem? yes the rap sucks but so do the vocals on moroder tracks. all y'all who can get down with that track but not tiga are feelin the indie guilt, i think.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:14 (nineteen years ago) link

OTM!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

there are some comments upthread that are totally bizarro universe to me. i'll just weigh in on a couple of these.

search:

smith & mighty - is totally magical. beautiful dubby trip hop intro which suddenly shifts into a "best-of" of underrated bristol jungle. you probably need it just for more rockers "show love" which has the greatest diva break ever, the filtering making her voice sound like a rocketship straining to drag the whole track into space. and also krust's remix of "bass speaker", under rakim's "kick a hole in the speaker" sample he throws down these frenzied bass farts that sound like he's trying to strangle the woofer from the inside.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:33 (nineteen years ago) link

all y'all who can get down with that track but not tiga are feelin the indie guilt, i think.

what about those of us who don't like either?

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

you are ok.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

damn I got told.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

it is all about the kick. also the fact that tiga is incapable of human error.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:10 (nineteen years ago) link

he's capable of eyeliner error.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:12 (nineteen years ago) link

that track fr me ws all about the quotables ('unless you gawn do it', 'the roof, the roof...', 'got a pole in the basement').

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:13 (nineteen years ago) link

it's also much funnier. I don't like tiga much on the whole but his djkicks is great... and he's hott.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:20 (nineteen years ago) link

ok, downloading both now. happy?

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:21 (nineteen years ago) link

his dj kicks is great, though I don't own it. my friends around here in the styx are really into it which is odd cos many of them are LADS (sadly).

does it actually have that brilliant black strobe mix of martini brothers or am I imagining that?

DJ Kicks vs Back to Mine vs Another Late Night

peepee (peepee), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:38 (nineteen years ago) link

it does have that you are right. His version of Madame Hollywood is much better than the original imo. it also has "time has changed" by codex and flexor. fantastic.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

So, I'm not alone, Harshaw!

peepee (peepee), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

having said all that i DO prefer the playgroup one.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I really like Tiga's American Gigolo aswell FWIW.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:48 (nineteen years ago) link

The !K7150 compilation is good but not great. My copy's got a DVD with some (admittedly mostly quite dodgy) videos on it too.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:59 (nineteen years ago) link

also i saw it for about 7 quid in fopp, so....

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:10 (nineteen years ago) link

no indie guilt here. ever!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:54 (nineteen years ago) link

I've got the Andrea Parker one around somewhere and remember thinking that it's at least worth a listen, although I can't remember why.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 9 August 2004 03:35 (nineteen years ago) link

The !K7150 compilation is good but not great.
Agreed. But there's a promo mix CD of tracks from it (a sort of honorary DJ Kicks record) that I like a lot more.

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I am definitely with those who love Tiga and Playgroup's mixes. For those who hate the Tiga cover, get Richard X's remix of it already (the same goes for the lovers too, but this is my preferred version).

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 9 August 2004 12:17 (nineteen years ago) link

two years pass...

the claude young mix is brilliant, except for a couple of unnecessary backspins. not 'spartan' or 'sparse' at all, really, just sort of... inhuman?

, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 23:52 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i enjoyed the claude young mix. a bit on the relentless side however so you have to be in the right mood.

i really liked the stacey pullen although even that was trumped by his exceptional bbc radio 1 essential mix (1996) that includes some of the same tracks.

Booka Shade are up next, for what it's worth

Telephone thing, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:44 (sixteen years ago) link

best: playgroup
biggest eye-opener: henrik schwarz
sentimental fave: stereo mcs (!)

i can always get behind tiga's 'hot in herre'.

haitch, Thursday, 2 August 2007 13:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah Playgroup's is awesome. It was quite an eye-opener for me at the time as well.

it will be interesting to see what Booka Shade do. The only DJ set i've heard from them was a fairly straightforward electro-house/minimal set, but I could imagine the DJ Kicks being closer to the atmospheric parts of Memento.

Tim F, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah the Playgroup one kinda set the tone for everything that happened after it.

Ronan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 16:14 (sixteen years ago) link

No love for Chicken Lips?

Telephone thing, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:13 (sixteen years ago) link

yes! the nina hagen song kills me every time. gets a bit samey in the second half though.

i really like the Hot Chip one, if only for 'My Piano', Wax Stag, the New Order/Young Leek and Noze

blueski, Monday, 8 October 2007 22:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I love the Erlend Øye one. Lots of glorious electro.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:23 (sixteen years ago) link

i think you could make a pretty solid case for the booka shade one being the strongest dj kicks mix ever

^@^, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

HMV have got a selection of these CDs in their current 2 for £10 promotion. All the incentive I needed to finally pick up the Daddy G and Chicken Lips mixes. Both are great.

as someone who loves the Tiga entry into the series, I really didn't need to have it explained to me that it was "fun" because it contains an unexpected cover, multiple times
