six months pass...

Just received in the post the Collaborations box set put together by George Harrison's widow, Olivia.

It's an incredibly lavish limited edition set ( i have 02866) of Ravi Shankar's music with a good 55 page hardback book with great photos, 3 CDs and 1 DVD of a 1974 concert in London. The CDs have replica format original vinyl sleeve artwork, and notes. The general impression is that no expense has been spared putting this together - and incredibly well done.

Sad. Was just reading Jimmy Page relating how Shankar wrote down sitar tunings for him - back before even Beatle George had a sitar.

As about an unlikely pop star as there's ever been. RIP :-(

R.I.P.

One of those names I feel like I've known forever, even though I've never really listened to him. His jam in Monterey Pop is epic.

There's a good bit of his work on Spotify, I've been listening all morning.

got to see him perform twice, the most sublime musical experiences of my life no doubt

i don't know too much beyond an "essential" comp and that Shankar Family & Friends thing he did w/ Harrison in the 70s. Kind of a flawed record, but enjoyable. Is that the only time he really attempted a pop crossover?

tylerw, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

I'm a huge fan--got to see him play two years ago. I've undoubtedly posted this elsewhere; 9:56 one of the greatest moments in any film ever.

one night in high school i decided to clandestinely smoke w33d in my room and covered it up by burning some nag champa afterwards.

the next day my dad buys me a ravi shankar cd and slyly tells me that he thinks i'll enjoy it

RIP.

Just cued up his recent Symphony (for traditional western orchestra with sitar soloist) which was released by the London Philharmonic Orchestra on their own label this year. It's on Spotify but under the conductor's name; just search 'Shankar symphony and you'll see it. Anouschka Shankar is the soloist.

It's really gorgeous! Will probably buy this. FYI anouschka enters the fray at about 5 minutes into the first movement.
