I was watching the finals with a bunch of friends, and even though most of us are anti-nationalist hippies, this was probably the one and only time we were really cheering for Finland. And we don't even like heavy metal.

More objectively speaking, I thought Spain's song was the best. It was suprisingly low-key (especially for a song by Las Ketchup), the sound was nice and breezy, and the accordion chorus plus the "duty free!" chants were lovely. Okay, they're pretty bad singers, but so is Lordi.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 13:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked Lithuania best. "we are the winners! of Eurovision!" (cue mad dancing bloke). I also liked the acapella dudes with the robot, but I seem to be alone in that one.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 21 May 2006 13:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I think the Latvian acapella guys had the best show in all it's minimalism - everyone else had lights and dancers, they just had the little robot, and the small heart-shape balloon in end was quite touching.

Lithuania's song was a funny, well set-up joke, but in the end I think it was too much of a joke to win. As I said on the ILM thread, the Eurovision song contest is really about honest camp, and if the contestants start taking it too ironically, that's not a good thing. That's why I didn't really like Iceland's performer: she was basically mocking the people who enjoy this kind of show. At least Lithuania's humour wasn't condescending.

I don't believe they actually won! Hooray!

The video for Hard Rock Hallelujah is the best thing ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 21 May 2006 13:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, that is absolute fucking genius.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 21 May 2006 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

It seems like hair metal has really made a comeback here, since this was one of the biggest hits of last year.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 14:20 (seventeen years ago) link

And the second was Brining back the balls to the Rock, which are a completly normal Lordi song without anything special.

THE TITLE ISN'T SPECIAL?

Tuomas that link is ludicrous! I blame ILM for hair metal coming back.

Next time, the UK should be represented by Sisters of Mercy - they would've kicked Lordi's arse with some kind of rehash of 'This Corrosion'. I predict a new cold wind will blow through the Euro and soon the whole competition will be a battle of the monsters of the night.

registered ratty (registered ratty), Sunday, 21 May 2006 20:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I wonder if Norway could be persuaded to let Count Grisnacht out for one night only.

(Incidentally, results 3-4 for Count Grisnacht are from ILM)

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Sunday, 21 May 2006 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

That is extremely gratifying, I insist on taking partial credit for that.

...not strictly on topic, but those of you who love Lordi's europop heavy metal may also appreciate Dream Evil, whose song 'The Book of Heavy Metal' has it all, including the line 'Have I no dignity?'. Select video and 'TBOHM' from the drop down:

Why this shit talk of the Count to sing in this competition? Some tenkind years ago he already has destroyed Euro, now you implore him to do so again?

I can't decide whether 'the arockalypse' or 'day of rockening' is my favourite lyric.

There was a funny part in the interview session the band gave after the contest, some Swedish journalist asked Lordi, "The people in Sweden have been asking: what do you look like under your mask?", and he was like, "What mask?".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Day of Rockening was the bit that made Neil nearly fall off the sofa laughing. (Arockalypse was my favourite).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Russia's entry = "Lonely No More" by Rob Thomas.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't really watched the Eurovision contest in years, so I was wondering, is it always so full of pastiches? Because Lordi sounded like Alice Cooper's "Poison", Sweden's song sounded like "Winner Takes It All", Ukraine had a Shakira clone, Portugal's chorus was like "Waterloo", Denmark had The Twist, etc. I guess that's one reason why I liked Las Ketchup the most, at least their tune didn't remind me of any other song.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:55 (seventeen years ago) link

The Moldovan blokey looked like Sezer from Big Brother, and that put me off too much to listen to his song.

I also liked the German C&W dudes, especially the drummer who was quite scarily intensely into the whole thing. Las Ketchup's choreography was like a shit Girls Aloud before rehearsals to actually do any co-ordination. Their outfits were awful too.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:56 (seventeen years ago) link

His name is Arsenium! He used to be in a Romanian boyband called O-zone and he is my new crush, I think.

Love Me, Love Me, he says. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Xe3QDfNBp4

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Apparently the German band's drummer is a well-known comedian over there. I don't know why he was the drummer of choice for this group though.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

The UK entry was a joke. Was he a comedian too?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:11 (seventeen years ago) link

On second hearing that Loca song is quite nice, though not really original. I especially love the rapper, representing the Moldovian rasta community.

We quite liked the UK guy, in context (context being "it's the Eurovision Song Contest, FFS").

Hard Rock Hallelujah Lyrics

Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!

The saints are crippled
On this sinners' night
Lost are the lambs with no guiding light

The walls come down like thunder
The rocks about to roll
It's The Arockalypse
Now bare your soul

All we need is lightning
With power and might
Striking down the prophets of false
As the moon is rising
Give us the sign
Now let us rise up in awe

Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
Demons and angels all in one have arrived
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
In God's creation supernatural high

The true believers
Thou shall be saved
Brothers and sisters keep strong in the faith
On the day of Rockoning
It's who dares, wins
You will see the jokers soon'll be the new kings

All we need is lightning
With power and might
Striking down the prophets of false
As the moon is rising
Give us the sign
Now let us rise up in awe

Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
Demons and angels all in one have arrived
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
In God's creation supernatural high

Wings on my back
I got horns on my head
My fangs are sharp
And my eyes are red
Not quite an angel
The one that fell
Now choose to join us or go straight to Hell

Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!

Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
Demons and angels all in one have arrived
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
In God's creation supernatural high

Hard Rock Hallelujah!

I remember seeing Emma Bunton doing one of her perky MOR numbers one of the years we hosted it, and compared to whatever the fuck our entry was that year she came across as the best performer in the world singing the best song in the world. We have loads of artists and songs who could win it, we just don't employ them for some reason.

Or maybe that's just me getting all misty eyed about the Great British pop song or something.

Finland deserved to win, altough I was rooting for Lithuania. I actually thought "We Are The Winners" was the best song in the contest - catchy as fuck. The Russian guy and Macedonian chick were insanely hot. The UK entry was a bit of a sad affair. Terry Wogan is the man - his commentary during the points tally was so OTM it hurt.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 22 May 2006 04:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't imagine Eurovision without Terry.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:45 (seventeen years ago) link

The Latvians were excellent! The robot and the red heart shaped balloon......no idea what it was all about of course.....but definately cheered me up! Quite catchy too I thought.

Apparently the rockers of Turkey and Finland found each other:

Let me repeat again that she was the hottest female performer there. And only the Armenian guy and Arsenium might've competed in overall hotness.

this was probably pointed out on the other thread but Terry was actually talking over performances (during the quiet bits) this year which hinted of 'arrogance' a little!

i don't remember him talking during performances in previous years, but maybe he did.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I have never heard him talk over performances either, surely it could be construed as CHEATING (not giving the teams he talked over a fair crack of the whip). The independent Eurovision aducicator (OFEURO) should look into it.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm sure he has always done this.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought Daz bottled it a bit in the performance - "Teenage Life" on record is terrific. Shades of tATu a couple of years ago.

Loved the Latvians - a real surprise.

Also loved the German country-pop.

Wife was keen on the Lithuanians and it worked a lot better than I thought it would.

But Lordi got our 25p.

Celebrate:

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41668000/jpg/_41668192_lordiget.jpg

And the sweet fruits of victory:

The Finnish city of Rovaniemi says it will name a square after monster rock band Lordi, its surprise Eurovision Song Contest winners.

The mayor of Rovaniemi - the band's hometown, located on the Arctic Circle - said the municipality wanted to honour its sons for their success.

The new square bearing Lordi's name will be part of the redevelopment of Rovaniemi's city centre.

The town - the regional capital of Lapland - lies on the Arctic Circle and describes itself as the home of the real Santa Claus.

In a statement issued to Finnish media the official Rovaniemi Santa Claus said: "Lordi's victory shows us that with hard work and belief in your own abilities even the greatest dreams come true."
