I was watching the finals with a bunch of friends, and even though most of us are anti-nationalist hippies, this was probably the one and only time we were really cheering for Finland. And we don't even like heavy metal.

More objectively speaking, I thought Spain's song was the best. It was suprisingly low-key (especially for a song by Las Ketchup), the sound was nice and breezy, and the accordion chorus plus the "duty free!" chants were lovely. Okay, they're pretty bad singers, but so is Lordi.

I liked Lithuania best. "we are the winners! of Eurovision!" (cue mad dancing bloke). I also liked the acapella dudes with the robot, but I seem to be alone in that one.

Yeah, I think the Latvian acapella guys had the best show in all it's minimalism - everyone else had lights and dancers, they just had the little robot, and the small heart-shape balloon in end was quite touching.

Lithuania's song was a funny, well set-up joke, but in the end I think it was too much of a joke to win. As I said on the ILM thread, the Eurovision song contest is really about honest camp, and if the contestants start taking it too ironically, that's not a good thing. That's why I didn't really like Iceland's performer: she was basically mocking the people who enjoy this kind of show. At least Lithuania's humour wasn't condescending.

Next time, the UK should be represented by Sisters of Mercy - they would've kicked Lordi's arse with some kind of rehash of 'This Corrosion'. I predict a new cold wind will blow through the Euro and soon the whole competition will be a battle of the monsters of the night.

I haven't really watched the Eurovision contest in years, so I was wondering, is it always so full of pastiches? Because Lordi sounded like Alice Cooper's "Poison", Sweden's song sounded like "Winner Takes It All", Ukraine had a Shakira clone, Portugal's chorus was like "Waterloo", Denmark had The Twist, etc. I guess that's one reason why I liked Las Ketchup the most, at least their tune didn't remind me of any other song.

The Moldovan blokey looked like Sezer from Big Brother, and that put me off too much to listen to his song.

I also liked the German C&W dudes, especially the drummer who was quite scarily intensely into the whole thing. Las Ketchup's choreography was like a shit Girls Aloud before rehearsals to actually do any co-ordination. Their outfits were awful too.

I remember seeing Emma Bunton doing one of her perky MOR numbers one of the years we hosted it, and compared to whatever the fuck our entry was that year she came across as the best performer in the world singing the best song in the world. We have loads of artists and songs who could win it, we just don't employ them for some reason.

Or maybe that's just me getting all misty eyed about the Great British pop song or something.

Finland deserved to win, altough I was rooting for Lithuania. I actually thought "We Are The Winners" was the best song in the contest - catchy as fuck. The Russian guy and Macedonian chick were insanely hot. The UK entry was a bit of a sad affair. Terry Wogan is the man - his commentary during the points tally was so OTM it hurt.

I have never heard him talk over performances either, surely it could be construed as CHEATING (not giving the teams he talked over a fair crack of the whip). The independent Eurovision aducicator (OFEURO) should look into it.

I thought Daz bottled it a bit in the performance - "Teenage Life" on record is terrific. Shades of tATu a couple of years ago.

Loved the Latvians - a real surprise.

Also loved the German country-pop.

Wife was keen on the Lithuanians and it worked a lot better than I thought it would.

But Lordi got our 25p.

The Finnish city of Rovaniemi says it will name a square after monster rock band Lordi, its surprise Eurovision Song Contest winners.

The mayor of Rovaniemi - the band's hometown, located on the Arctic Circle - said the municipality wanted to honour its sons for their success.

The new square bearing Lordi's name will be part of the redevelopment of Rovaniemi's city centre.

The town - the regional capital of Lapland - lies on the Arctic Circle and describes itself as the home of the real Santa Claus.

In a statement issued to Finnish media the official Rovaniemi Santa Claus said: "Lordi's victory shows us that with hard work and belief in your own abilities even the greatest dreams come true."
