About 2 per week for me.

If you're careful about holding certain items, burritos can be quite healthy!

One a week, wheat tortilla.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:34 (eighteen years ago) link

why not get a taco (or 3) or an enchilada or a chimichanga? the success of burritos seems like "gringos like when you put a whole bunch of shit all in one thing, regardless of how it ends up tasting."
i'm honestly puzzled.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:36 (eighteen years ago) link

four a week, made by me. when I go out for mexican I get enchiladas or something.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, lately I have gotten two or three tacos instead of a burrito. Although they def. pile in all that lettuce, beans, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream as much as they can onto a tiny corn tortilla.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:39 (eighteen years ago) link

'Cuz burritos have built-in convenience that you get all of it in your hand, wrapped-up. You can't get that with enchiladas or chimichangas.

tacos are usually smaller, more numerous, and not as many kinds of ingredients(no rice, for example).

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:40 (eighteen years ago) link

things to avoid: refried beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole (although it has "good" fat), and any other dairy based sauces. Substitute whole beans and/or rice.

chicken, especially grilled is much better than any red meat or pork.

Sometimes burritos are just too huge too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:41 (eighteen years ago) link

But Sour cream and Guac taste so good!

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:42 (eighteen years ago) link

"i like refried beans. i would like to try fried beans, because maybe they are just as good, and we are wasting time."

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:42 (eighteen years ago) link

see exactly. rice should not be in a tortilla with meat and sauce and beans and sour cream and guac and whatever else is in the kitchen! it's convenient, but the tastes and textures don't mesh and the tortilla is always a soggy bleh mess.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Noooo! That is wrongness!

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:46 (eighteen years ago) link

There are no good burritos to be had in montreal and it sucks. Homemade: about every two weeks but it's not the same.

i love burritos. i don't eat them that often really, maybe once a month, but i try to have some variety (and health consciousness, haha) in my diet. the last mexican food i had (thursday or friday) was a quesadilla with chicken, grilled jalapenos, and scallions.

oh yeah and as far as i can tell the mexicans around here (60 miles north of the mexican border) like burritos too and seem to have no problem with them being "gringo" food.

yeah, same in SF. In fact, all the (primarily Central American) staff from Chipotle are to be found eating in the little taqueria on 2nd at lunch!

El Farolito or Cancun (Berkeley). I've heard people swear by Cactus, but I've never been.

the last mexican food i had (thursday or friday) was a quesadilla with chicken, grilled jalapenos, and scallions

and on wednesday afternoon: two chile lime carne asada tacos (w/ flour tortillas).

note that most of the burritos are from the local Baja Fresh fastfood place, which does not use the refried beans in most of them. plenty of other junk, tho. so tasty.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:04 (eighteen years ago) link

kingfish you cut off that quote of mine prematurely.
i don't think i've ever had a chimichanga actually. but i've had burritos. and they suck.
being a gringo, i have no problem eating some gringo food. i prefer lettuce and cheese and sour cream on my tacos, for instance. i dunno, maybe every burrito i've had has just been unusually bland and soggy.
how do you add a dif salsa or hot sauce to them without opening them up and having it becoming a huge mess?

xpost i've had a baja fresh burrito. BLAND!

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:07 (eighteen years ago) link

i like my burritos to have non-refried pinto beans. black beans never really taste right in burritos.

i'm weird actually; i don't eat burritos with my hands. i leave the thing rolled up, make one vertical slice down the center, stir in the sauce, and eat with a fork. geeta saw me do this once and she was baffled.

I don't understand the cred that El Fartolito has. Having lived right around the corner from it for 4 years, I quickly found it completely nauseating - way too much sour cream, no grilled chicken, super-salty tortillas, terrible service, bland salsa, no real variety in ingredients... and yet friends/bandmates/neighbors are always suggesting going there. Maybe I just got burned out on it...

my current standby is Tonayense - best from the restaurant, but their roach coaches retain the same flavor.

Shake yMo Collier, Monday, 11 July 2005 20:13 (eighteen years ago) link

My favorites are Cancun and El Farolito too!

I also like Baja Fresh though. I don't think the flavor is bland at all. I love the salsa bar (which could be useful if you think it's bland).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:14 (eighteen years ago) link

No shit??? really??? you're kidding, right??????????????????

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Baja Fresh I've never tried (where is it?)

Cancun is good - I'd put it in the same strata as Pancho Villa, Zapata, Azteca, La Corneta (they're all kind of similar in approach).

what do people make of Balazo on Haight St? I've always liked it, even though it is overpriced and about as authentic as Taco Bell, they make some tasty shit.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 11 July 2005 20:17 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah the only good thing about baja fresh is that there's cholula on every table. i'm lucky in that there's a place in my area that makes a dozen or so fresh salsas every day.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:18 (eighteen years ago) link

i eat about one a month:

burrito al pastor with refried beans on a flour tortilla. i like the more authentic places.

farolito is pretty good (i don't eat sour cream though). i ate at balazo once and the carne asada was almost all cartilage and gristle.

My favorite burrito thread is the hilarious one where andy calls out gringos who order burritos in spanish, that was a great thread.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Is this a sort of blue blace with candles? I think Alex took me there and I liked it.

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:19 (eighteen years ago) link

the salsa bar is what keeps it from being bland. mix about 3 different kinds together, slightly unroll the side and give it an even spreading, and then there you go.

now, baja fresh is overpriced, i'll grant you that. everything in there costs about a buck more thna it should.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Baja Fresh is this mexican restaurant (now a large franchise) from Simi Valley started by this old religious white lady who thanked me for killing a mosquito hawk right before closing about 12 years ago in her Newbury Park store (the 2nd Baja Fresh IIRC).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Shakey, I don't know if there is a Baja Fresh in SF. There is one on Shattuck in berkeley and another in the plaza in El Cerrito...

If a hole appeared inside your roof
And a burrito fell through it, like POOF!
And landed on your lap real hard
You'd notice it

If after you had ate your snack
You felt a violent need to crap
"I really hope it's just a fart!"
You'd notice it
