through being dave cool (markers), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 19:42 (twelve years ago) link

Shoot markers, I figured with your Metallica fanboy #1 status Lars would be emailing you demos on the weekly.

he's in the next room doing mastering the record himself atm, doesn't want me to hear the songs till they're finished :-(

i have a feeling my 11-year-old nephew is going to hate this!

metallica needs to think more about their 11-year-old fans

lou reed just needs to think more

i swear i said that quote like 1M times the week after i saw "some kind of monster"

like markers, i also saw it in the theater.

are you ready for a thing called prog? (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

i did not see it in the theater, but it is worth seeing. one of the most intensely uncool rock docs ever, i think.

tylerw, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

I still haven't seen it. :(

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

went with two of my high school friends, one of whom definitely wasn't into metallica, but he humored me anyway so thanks if you ever read this

through being dave cool (markers), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

The scenes with Dave Mustaine were crazy enough, but the fact that it was filmed two days after 9/11 on Dave's 40th birthday - and him stuck with Metallica by happenstance instead of being with his family in Phoenix - is even crazier.

one of the most intensely uncool rock docs ever, i think.

certainly one of the greatest though too!

the wheelie king (wk), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

it's uncoolness is a good thing!!!

through being dave cool (markers), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

i need to rewatch it though, i haven't seen it in full since that historical day i saw it in the theater

through being dave cool (markers), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

oh yeah, it's cool -- it's just that i don't think i've ever seen a rock documentary where a band came across so terribly. they all seem deeply, deeply lame.

tylerw, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

lars's dad seems pretty rad

Record Collector: Rumor has it you aren't happy with the way you come across in the forthcoming METALLICA movie, "Some Kind Of Monster"?

Dave Mustaine: "No I wasn't. They edited out a lot more stuff than was there and they sent it to me for my approval. I said, I don't want you to use it. It was two days after 9/11, on my 40th birthday. I was supposed to be at home getting an AMG CL55 Mercedes from my family as a present, and I'm here with one of the guys that I've hated the most in my entire life — my entire existence on the planet — making a video tape in San Francisco, because I can't fly to Phoenix to see my family. And they sent me the tape and I said, 'No, I don't want you to use it,' and they went ahead and used it anyway. I'm like, 'Why send it to me for my approval if, when I say I don't like it, you go ahead and use it anyway?' "

Record Collector: Wasn't your approval a legal requirement?

Dave Mustaine: "Well, see, they said that I signed the paper so they figured, 'Fuck him, he's signed the paper.' You may remember September 13th, New York was still on fire, we had been up non-stop watching CNN. Everywhere you went, people were freaking out over white powder, there were bomb threats everywhere, you were having all kinds of fuckin' radical military maneuvers and shit... it was a war.
