Somebody needs to record a special album for thrift stores and charity shops:

'Yes Of Course I Can Give You Change For A £20 Note'
'Thanks For This Kind Donation Of Betamax Tapes'
'No We Do Not Accept Clothes Covered In Dubious Stains'
'Haggling On A £2 Item Is Perfectly Acceptable In A Charity Shop'
'Just Buy Something Will Ya?'

recently i was at the supermarket walking down a long empty aisle when a man appeared at the other end and started walking towards me and then the 'the lady in red' started playing and as we drew level we looked at each other and burst out laughing.

boz scaggs is one of my top ten grocery store musical artists.

yesterday in a department store i heard:
funky cold medina (tone loc)
followed by
copperhead road (steve earle)
followed by
you give love a bad name (bon jovi)
followed by
i don't know because i left but i was braced for anything.

there was a likeable thin middle-aged sales clerk with a handlebar moustache and a glinting ear who became animated and sang a little during copperhead road but then sank into a lugubrious state when bon jovi commenced, i didn't see what he got up to during funky cold medina because he was lurking behind a rack of jackets. he struck me as someone who is skilled at looking busy, which is a talent i envy.

usually keep this positive but I'd been going to Starbucks to study for classes in the hour and a half I have between work and school, but lately they've been playing this CD of Barbra Streisand crooner songs and it's like aural terrorism. I feel so bad for the people working there.

corey, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

I asked one of the baristas if they could turn it down a notch and she explained that the music is either so loud you can't ignore it or off, there's no volume control. Fucking horrible.

don't recall music but this woman who is i guess a manager at the supermarket was singing "don't you know that crime is going up up up up"

i had to restrain myself from singing the next line

then she said something about coupons and looked at me and winked.

i guess she is a s~t~o~n~e~r? b/c back a couple yrs ago when i was an occasional Smoker a pack of rolling papers fell out of my wallet, and she was like "where do you get those? is there a store near here that sells them?"

one month passes...

This is an unlikely one. "Aren't You Glad", from "The Family That Plays Together" by Spirit, in an extremely un-hipsterish pub in Paisley. Also it's literally the only music that's
been played.

Day off work so I was in town - in particular eating lunch in a McDonald's in a shopping centre - and heard this startling selection back to back:

Madonna, 'Vogue'
Kate Nash, 'Foundations'
Robin S, 'Show Me Love'
Elle King, 'Ex's & Oh's'
Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, 'Uptown Funk'

you gotta roll with the pączki to get to what's real (snoball), Monday, 25 March 2024 19:47 (four weeks ago) link
