I was actually just waiting for MOTD2 (and avoiding Blade 2 on in the other room), and thought I would give the snooker a cursory glance, having paid no attention to the entire tournament thus far. I'm so glad I watched it though, it was top entertainment.

er, no Dom, not in this game (though when he took that long comfort brake against Ebdon there was a 'will he come back' thought) - O'Sullivan is probably the best player ever but Higgins is up there too. Ronnie has to battle his own boredom but if he gets to the final of a tournament it takes a lot to beat him. You probably have to take certain chances and that double in the last just illustrated that perfectly.

wotta a game, easily up there w/some other masters finals over the years (hendry-williams finished on the black too, hendry-mcmanus a decade ago) - apparently these two will be scheduled to meet in the QFs of the world championships and that is a total shame.

two months pass...
Dramatic exit for Hendry today. 9-9 with Bond, it went to the final frame, which dragged on for more than half an hour. Nobody could get a decent break going, loads of snookers and fouls. It went right to the final black. Bond potted it, the crowd cheered, he'd won it, and then the white trickled across the table and into the middle pocket. Doh. I thought that meant Hendry had won, but instead they had some kind of tense play-off with just the black.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Were the scores really level? bcz that is when a re-spotted black situation occurs. If Hendry went ahead by getting the 7 points would he have automatically won instead?

Anyway, awesome n'all - totally happy Hendry is gone.

Apart from Higgins going out its all been predictable and one-sided so it ws good to see a thriller that finally get this championship on the move, so to speak.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Ronnie off to a great start with the 10-4, I reiterate my desire to call my firstborn male Ronnie O'Sullivan Passantino. What a hero.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

9-7 down against Day, who is playing some gd stuff and has really evil-looking eyes. Ronnie's long potting hasn't been as good as usual, however its made more of a diff more in the 1st session than in the 2nd. wonder what's going with his wrist, he is handshaking with his left hand - maybe its a new custom you just never know w/Ronnie.

The other really gd game is Doherty-Stevens (8-8), playing to a conclusion later on.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 April 2006 10:57 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah but this is different because the white went in-off. so the black technically wasn't potted and hence it is respotted.

what i didn't get was another one, the ken doherty game last night(?) - it was 55-55 on points with a black to play. ken doherty missed the black altogether and the other guy was awarded the frame (matthew stevens?) and i didn't understand why.. or maybe ken conceded? surely they can still play for a re-spot.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:05 (seventeen years ago) link

btw guys, it's not the final yet! there's a general snooker championships thread...

the rolling towards the pocket snooker championship thread

ken c (ken c), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Wasn't there once a "Ronnie is a Muslim" story when he befriended Prince Naseem Hamed? Maybe he's worked out that it's ruder to use your left hand.

(the in-off in the Hendry game resulted in level points, that's why it was respotted - otherwise the black can only be scored once, whether potted or fouled)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:09 (seventeen years ago) link

o rly i didn't know that! that makes sense then for both instances

ken c (ken c), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:15 (seventeen years ago) link

(oh well didn't see that other thread - even if this thread ws started in response to what ws happening in the final this has turned out to be the snooker thread with revivals for all sorts of matches in any tournaments.)

As for what happened last night: from the commentator's explanation its in the rules that if you don't hit the black in that situation the frame is automatically lost. xp = ok so yeah level points.

There ws a story a cpl of years that he converted but apparently he just went to a mosque and the story snowballed.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:19 (seventeen years ago) link

The best thing about that rumour was that he was supposed to have converted in a kebab shop. You couldn't make it etc etc.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Doherty smashed Stevens to win 13-8, he really played well, and might not play as well again.

Here we go: O'sullivan-Day final session..

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I forgot this was available on the BBC web feed. John Virgo just said "It's a funny old game" - Ronnie doesn't seem to agree.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Cracking yellow from Ronnie on the way to nicking that frame. Poor shot selection from Day cost him.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:23 (seventeen years ago) link

what a first frame!! Day has a naive-ish tactical game, gave a free ball too easily.

love this game..xp

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:24 (seventeen years ago) link

onto the next - Ronnie w/a 46 break but he missed position when potting the blue (apparently he replaced his tip just this week), Day is currently on and could steal..

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

omg...Day about to win, then fatally miscues and Ronnie clears up! 9-9.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:41 (seventeen years ago) link

11-9 for Ronnie. Although if Day had taken his chance it could've been v different.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Ronnie was 12-9 up, but Day has nicked it back to 12-10.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Day seems to be having horrendous luck. Ronnie's playing well but it seems that Day gets a bad contact or an unfortunate kiss or something every time he gets a chance. With a bit of a run of the balls he could be at least even in this match. He needs to work on his shot selection, Ronnie's benn getting in too easily for the entire session.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Ronnie wraps it up. Good match.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:40 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, very tense..and that is how it is so far w/Williams 4-4 after the first sesh.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Chubby Boy got taken out 13-7 by Wellingborough's finest. Semi-finals see Ebdon vs Fu, and the champion elect vs Graham Dott. Ronnie = god.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

walked through the square outside the crucible today and it was full of (mostly men) people watching the matches on a big outside screen! drinking beer having a bbq.... couldnt quite get it. do you go down the pub to watch the snooker, really>?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 21:56 (seventeen years ago) link

fucking hell. neil robertson what were you thinking.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

do you go down the pub to watch the snooker, really?

Last night, in the pub, as soon as the Barcelona v AC Milan game was finished, some bloke was haranguing the bar staff to turn over to the BBC interactive service so he could watch the snooker. So I guess someone does.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 27 April 2006 06:23 (seventeen years ago) link

If it's on in the pub I'll watch. Then again I watch any sport if it's on in the pub. Pub + sport = good. Even horse racing.

Anyway, Graeme's off his dot early this morning and has opened up an 11-8 lead over the Rocket. Ronnie's missing sitters. his "change your tip every time you play a shot" strategy seems to be backfiring.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 09:18 (seventeen years ago) link

12-8. 5 frames in a row for Dott.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 09:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll watch *anything at all* if it's on in the pub. Rugby, bad R'n'B videos, horse-racing, rolling Sky News reports about the same thing over and over again. Pub TVs = magnets for the eyes.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 29 April 2006 09:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I got a 16 break last night.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 09:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd have watched that too, if it had been on the telly.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 29 April 2006 09:58 (seventeen years ago) link

13-8.

Ronnie's finally knocked a long red in, the comeback starts here maybe...

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha I'm the biggest jinx ever. He just missed the easiest pot of the tournament.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:18 (seventeen years ago) link

14-8. Ronnie's head's as bad as his cueing arm now. He refused an easy snooker to attempt a stupidly hard brown then conceded a frame when he only needed one snooker. I think he's given up (cue Ronnie knocking in 3 maxi breaks in a row).

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:28 (seventeen years ago) link

4 reds, 3 blacks, misses a black off the spot. I double jinxed it by jinxing my jinx.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah - he's given up.

He's long potting has been somewhat lacking throughout the tournament and it was only a matter of time before that spread to the rest of his game. xp

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Commentator "We've witnessed something akin to a psychological collapse here" - what a cunt.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:32 (seventeen years ago) link

39 behind with a red on the table and he concedes again. I think he just wants out of there now.

8 frames in a row for Dott.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:40 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah...its a horror show but its not the first time this has happened and he has come back from it. xp

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:43 (seventeen years ago) link

When I say 'its only a matter of time..' what I meant was I thought he might've had a bad session but would keep enough of a focus to win at least a couple of frames to still have a chance of sorts.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:51 (seventeen years ago) link

16-8.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:57 (seventeen years ago) link

8-0 session.

I wonder how much it costs to go to a session, as there may only be 3 frames left to play today. They'll have to wheel out Dennis Taylor to do trick shots and tell jokes about simple minded Irishmen.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Interesting seeing Ronnie's pre-match comments about never having any confidence whatsoever. But, as he says, he's done alright.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 29 April 2006 11:19 (seventeen years ago) link

4 in a row for Fu on the comeback trail, still trailing 15-13. I don't think anyone would have predicted a Dott v Fu final after last night but it's a definite possibilty now.

(onimo jinx, sorry Marcu)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

15-14. Very strange day so far, with neither of the favourites winning a frame yet.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 14:43 (seventeen years ago) link

15-15 - now the pressure shifts. This is a great match.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 29 April 2006 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Ebdon looks like a thin version of my husband. It's somewhat disconcerting. (I haven't just noticed this, by the way)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 29 April 2006 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

16-16!!!!!!

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 29 April 2006 15:47 (seventeen years ago) link
