Point of comparison: Thora Birch's character in Ghost World mostly consists of acerbic comebacks, yet I love the character and love the film. There's sometimes no accounting for how two versions of the same thing hit you differently.

ha i didn't even realize it was a diablo cody movie i thought strongo was just doing his peripatetic thing

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

im pretty sure violet plays over the end credits

thora birch gets much better lines in ghost world than ellen page does in juno. spirit of the two movies is substantially different. the dialogue in juno is a bad fit because it's kind of a sentimental, earnest movie.

so weird i had no idea diablo cody was involved in any of these

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

I think maybe I no longer have any critical faculties

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

The Evil Dead remake would help explain Juno's improbable Herschell Gordon Lewis fandom. (Which was really my point--such things seemed more like Juno's creators trying to impress me with their pop-culture knowledge than anything plausibly to do with Juno's character.)

clemenza, Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

Any chance at all that ED remake won't blow? Maybe?

(。◕‿‿◕。) (ENBB), Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

haha who else could it have been? xp re burlesque

just makes me think of all those simpsons gags with hollywood producer types: "she's a stripper AND a writer. so we greenlit her to write... about strippers. it happened totally organically."

goole, Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

lol, we saw that IN THE THEATER

I saw it in a theater with someone else, so when it came on cable I had to watch it again. I think he's traumatized now.

clemenza: as someone who ran with a clique of smart, sarcastic kids in a MN town, all of that stuff is WAY more plausible than you'd think

we even had someone who would have said "honest to blog" had blogs existed, but she was considered "the dumb one"

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

also I kind of thought they just made up Burlesque as they went along

Dan idk - I've worked with a lot of teens in the last couple years and none of them sounded that idiotic.

(。◕‿‿◕。) (ENBB), Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

on one of the marc maron interviews one of the people was talking about how she was trying to get diablo cody to start a writing workshop for strippers and prostitutes and cody was like "nah, most strippers are stupid"

as someone who ran with a clique of smart, sarcastic kids in a MN town, all of that stuff is WAY more plausible than you'd think

Fair point. I know I wasn't exactly Juno's target audience.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

E, I am not talking the teen effect, I'm talking the MN effect. Not that it's plausible that kids would carbon-copy that type of dialogue, but that something very similar based very heavily on influences from random genres of music and cult films existed in my home town in my immediate circle, plus at things like All-State Choir I met kids from other towns/suburbs who did very similar things.

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

Ah ok yeah I know nothing about MN so maybe you're right!

"Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either."

hearing diablo cody dialogue coming out of patton oswalt's mouth is going to make me want to start believing in god so i can curse him.
