Ha, must visit there someday. Just got the new CD, gonna fit in as many listens as possible before the gig tonight...

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 14 April 2005 10:10 (nineteen years ago) link

That was superb! Was worried it was gonna be too hardcore to listen to, too abstract to dance to, but it was perfectly pitched. My favourite ae gig so far I think.

They didn't come on till midnight though, which meant four hours of sitting around, as we got there at 8, and couldn't be bothered to dance or even listen to the support DJs.

Hopefully getting this tomorrow, if Amazon don't fuck up.

I listend to Chiastic for the first time this weekend, my fellow Warp chum told me it wasn't a great album and remarked that it was a bit of a mess musically but I really like it.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Got it today and listened to about half of it. It's quite... danceable actually!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 18 April 2005 13:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Chiastic is great, Cichli is genius.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 18 April 2005 13:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Whoa! Just listened to it.

Personally, so far, I hate it.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I've been listening to it a lot, which is a good sign. My take on it so far: The progression from Draft to Untilted is probably the most linear since Amber-->Tri Repetae. But also it's like Draft meets Confield, the harsh percussion of the former with the textures of the latter. Basically it's the album Draft should have been...

ledge (ledge), Monday, 25 April 2005 11:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I think the progression would have worked better if they'd gone EP7 - Untilted - Draft7.30 - Confield.

Really, I think this is their best and most accessible out of the last few and I'm still trying to understand Confield for some reason. A lot of it is very similar to EP7 as well and there's some really cheeky samples buried deep in there.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I think Confield would have seemed like a radical break whenever it was released, it just seems to stand out on its own. Whenever I think about it I get textures and images, and the percussion just doesn't feature. I know Cfern and Pen Expers are pretty beat heavy but I don't think they represent the album.

Tell me more about these samples...

ledge (ledge), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:01 (nineteen years ago) link

I haven't looked at the tracklisting, just been listening to the cd but there's some interesting stuff going on that makes me smile.

One track has all these 80s breakdance sounds and actually sounds like it's supposed to be played off of an early electro record.

The first track is kind of pumping - it's the danciest thing Autechre have done in ages. I do kind of wish they could do another Arch Carrier again, just for me though.

There is a track with loads of "hooraying" crowd noises and strange human mumbling - and i like that in an autechre track. Not since that BOAC track have I heard any real human samples being used.

two weeks pass...
anyone have any u.s. tour reports?? the .microsound list seems to like snd more, but they would. i'm going to see them tonight. the new album seems to be really divisive among fans. i think it's a grower.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 13 May 2005 13:00 (nineteen years ago) link

i thought their NYC show started really slow, but turned out quite nice - like one long 90-minute build-up. it took about a half hour to get really interesting. the end bordered on chaos, it was great.

i haven't heard much of the new record yet but i was told they played lots of it.

rajeev (rajeev), Friday, 13 May 2005 13:05 (nineteen years ago) link

excellent. bring on the chaos.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 13 May 2005 13:09 (nineteen years ago) link

i thought both were pretty amazing. they dwarfed the earlier caribou/jr boys/russian futurists show upstairs (they played the bar upstairs w/ bad sound @ 6). autechre and snd played downstairs later.

both autechre and snd were more engaging than most rock acts i've seen. in some ways this wasn't surprising at all.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 13 May 2005 13:15 (nineteen years ago) link

i like untilted.

i'm going to see autechre in asheville two weeks from now. i'm stoked!

latebloomer: the rebel sound of grits and bacon (latebloomer), Friday, 13 May 2005 13:22 (nineteen years ago) link

that they were more engaging is not surprising to me either...last time i saw them (the only time i saw them actually), the venue was just dark with no visuals or lighting to speak of, there was just sound and it was utterly engrossing. one of the best shows that i've ever been to. by the end, i'd say about half the audience had left which is pretty classic. i could make some disparaging comments, but i won't because less people made it sound better!

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 13 May 2005 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw them on tuesday. I thought it was a really good show. The totally chaotic parts where all these weird sounds were playing at once were the best (this is a pretty awful description, but it's pretty hard to describe).

I was kind of undecided about untilted, but seeing them live made me appreciate it a lot more. I've been listening to it a bunch these last few days.

peter in montreal (spaces are allowed), Friday, 13 May 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah NYC was pitch black as well. it also boasted the highest male-to-female ratio i've ever seen at a show.

rajeev (rajeev), Friday, 13 May 2005 14:04 (nineteen years ago) link

The show in Toronto was incredible. Autechre started with the harsh, jackhammer beats -- think track 1 on the "Basscadet" ep -- moved on to skittery stuff like the "Draft 7:30" and "Untilted" tracks, and ended with chaos. They played for about 90 minutes in total.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 13 May 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

i bet that the women at the nyc show were the coolest ever. girls be discussing the algorithmic alchemy.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 13 May 2005 14:19 (nineteen years ago) link

The Toronto show was indeed great if exhausting. Did you ever find out who the openers were? #2 was pretty damn good.

I enjoyed Untilted quite a bit on first listen. In a weird way it reminds me of listening to things like drum solos or West African drum circles. I might like it more than Draft 7.30 (the only other one I have) but that might just be because it seems to have more straight grooves.

Sundar (sundar), Friday, 13 May 2005 19:27 (nineteen years ago) link

haha you obviously weren't at the squarepusher show in boston - I was shocked.
I have to admit, this definitely puts me off going to some shows if Im not feeling particularly motivated to begin with. I skipped the ae nyc & boston shows cos Im not really feelin the new one enough to justify the drive & $$
anyway yeah, I don't know why there is such poor female attendance at these kind of shows. I can't think of a single good reason for it.

According to the schedule on Warp's website, SND are playing all dates on the tour incl. Canada.

I saw SND a couple of years ago and they were similarly awesome. I have no idea why their records are so boring in comparison to their live sets.

one month passes...
Got 'Untilted' prior to seeing them live this weekend, it's alright maybe it will grow on me more (only 2 full listens). I like the first three tracks best, they seem to have a really propulsive broken-groove about them, but without just banging the point home. After those it seems to slip into business as usual, not a huge amount of variation. 'The Trees' seemed to stand out more this time.

But, it does seem to be all about the 'craft' and little else here to me. Doesn't feel like a significant advance in sound compared to the records I know by them (Tri Repetae, Chiastic Slide, LP5) but I do love how smudgy, oily and dark it all feels, it's a very 'live' sounding record. Sublimit' is a bit of an anticlimactic closing track compared to some of their other work though. Doesn't really surpass, or expand my expectations of them as a whole record.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 4 July 2005 20:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Even at a very reasonable home-listening volume... Untilted is one bastard LOUD record, at least for the first three tracks. I think they might be worth the price I paid for this (cheap promo in card sleeve) alone.

anybody going to see them in Camden (koko is it?) on september 17? i am tempted to make the journey down but not sure whether it will be worth the large train fare.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I am feeling too old for this. Doors at 11? C'mon! I need to be tucked up in bed with a mug of steaming Horlicks by 12 at the latest.

Plus getting home from Camden after tubes have finished = a bitch.

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Can someone convince me to get Untilted even though I already have Confield and Draft?

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Sunday, 21 August 2005 00:29 (eighteen years ago) link

It's better than Draft and more enjoyable than Confield.

Lukas (lukas), Sunday, 21 August 2005 01:54 (eighteen years ago) link

it's okay. i must admit for a band i once thought were infallible i'm really starting to lose my patience with them.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 21 August 2005 13:02 (eighteen years ago) link

unfortunately dog latin is also right.

Can't remember, sing it and i'll tell ya...

Oh it's one of the first three off tri repetae, they're all solid gold; the exemplary tracks on an exemplary album.

Wonder what they're up to now.

ledge, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:26 (seventeen years ago) link

anyone know where i can find that webcast?
