This story has been updated to correct the spelling of Colombia and to clarify that Megan Rapinoe was not a starter for the United States.

can we just acknowledge that bill simmons is not suited for anything outside of writing. sounding like a 20 year old fratboy when you're 45 is nagl
― dayo, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 11:35 (twelve years ago) link
who doesn't acknowledge that?
― frogbs, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 13:05 (twelve years ago) link
people on here who acknowledge listening to his podcasts and are proud of it
― dayo, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 13:10 (twelve years ago) link
i'm not so sure he's even suited for writing anymore. the idea of a 45-year old man trying to lace sports columns with Jersey Shore references and a "breakdown" of the Pippa Middleton "situation" is cringe-worthy. plus I don't think he really passes the Sports Guy Turing test anymore as I'm pretty sure I could write an article that could be mistaken for the actual thing. in fact, it would be underrated, kind of like a 2006 post-breakup Jennifer Aniston. see, here's the thing. In 2006, she was underrated, as everybody (the Sports Wife) was feeling sorry for her, and hated Angelina Jolie. But, in 2008, she became overrated, as

lol i have no idea about "proud of it" but depending on the guest podcast simmons is far and away the most tolerable simmons.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 18:23 (twelve years ago) link
his podcasts are often great
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 August 2011 18:28 (twelve years ago) link
tho often maddening
When he has a guy like Norm MacDonald it's definitely good and I like the "guess the line" podcasts with Cousin Sal.
I did think when people would make fun of his voice that they were just kinda randomly hating on the guy, but holy christ do they have a point. He sounds like that snot-nosed kid from Home Movies. Plus I do get the vibe of "we're all bros and we can all make fun of everyone, but don't say anything too mean to Simmons"

nice, i was just thinking that i actually can't wait for the classical (nu-darko) while grantland's awful complete lack of editing is wearing me down
― rock out with your lock out d-stern (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link
i mean really, they just need a real honest-to-god editor who can fact-check and edit...you can get them on the internet for like twenty bucks now, pony up some of that subway cash money doggie
― rock out with your lock out d-stern (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link
they do desperately need that, but i think the longer-term thing that this guy is right about is how simmons' columns look worse when presented outside of espn.com
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:18 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, I agree with pretty much everything in there. I like some of the writers - I think Jonah Keri is basically good, but essentially I feel like you can only really enjoy Grantland if you ARE Bill Simmons, and I have yet to find anyone who really likes the site as anything more than an occassional time-waster.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:27 (twelve years ago) link
there was another article about that somewhere, which said something like "ESPN needs Simmons in order to appear edgy, while Simmons needs ESPN to appear as though he has things to say that ought to be censored". his Grandland articles are basically the same thing he writes for ESPN, just with the occassional "fuck"
