I like that yellow and black one a fair bit. Looks like I'd never be able to sit down in it, though.

many of their dresses don't actually suit my body type but there are some that do, and almost everything is made of cotton and/or silk! yaay :)

I meant the yellow and blk one in this thread. :) But rrob, I liek those two dresses you linked to, also! A little too drapey for me, though, you know. But the Athene one is really stylish! All those pleats making up the fullness of the skirt... kind of hott, for a tailoring nerd.

i love the fabric and skirts on both of those, though the top on the athene dress is a bit confusing, in terms of how it's supposed to interact with boobs.

I SO want this but the gathering on the skirt looks like it'd make me look disproportionately bottom-heavy :-((

That's awesome.

I am having a dress malfunction of sorts today. I just got this awesome new cotton faux wrap dress but the faux wrap part is sort of p low cut and maybe gaping a bit so that in certain positions my bra shows. Wearing mismatched cardi to fix this problem. Sad.

Yeah that thing is hysterical.

I actually did look for a tank to wear under it this morning btu I was running late and couldn't find it. Might have to get some tit tape.

Have you ever thought about how tough life must be for your neighborhood tramp? She loves to flash her cleavage at bars, nightclubs, bus stops and 7-11s. But around the office, such blatant display of booby-flesh gets disapproval from superiors, as well as causing female co-workers to gossip about the office hoochie. (Of course they’re all just jealous because they don’t have such a great bustline!) She could bring a change of clothes, but that gets cumbersome to lug around everyday.

Saved that for posterity!

I used dress tape on my person and a wrap dress the other weekend, and I have to say, I was pretty tired and drunk when I took it off and I just pulled until it came unstuck but there was some very unfortunate...bruising/skin damage from doing that. Recommend de-stickifying with rubbing alcohol or something.

ouch!

tehresa, Sunday, 14 August 2011 03:18 (twelve years ago) link

I think you could definitely rock a fascinator, just need to find the right one.

ljubljana, Sunday, 14 August 2011 03:40 (twelve years ago) link

OMG you are going to the Travers!!!!? Soooooo jealous. I usually go up for the Whitney (crowds less crazy) but this week I am Augusting in DC instead of Saratoga and Maine. First world bummers :(

quincie, Sunday, 14 August 2011 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

i have never been to a horse race! i'm excited. i don't know when i will have time to find attire.

tehresa, Sunday, 14 August 2011 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

I swear by a wrap dress for these things--it can be hot, you don't want to be in anything too short for comfortable sitting (do you have clubhouse seats?), a hat is great because it keeps the sun off, oh and if you are in the clubhouse there are bathroom attendants who have the most incredibly layout of stuff that I have ever seen. Like, they basically will give you a pair of stockings should you so desire.

quincie, Sunday, 14 August 2011 19:44 (twelve years ago) link

I have no idea what one wears to a fancy horserace! Wd prob go with something mid-century/classic. Right now, this stuff is all lumped under a "Mad Men-inspired" label, but it will still be classic after no one cares about the show anymore.

So, practically speaking, something cotton, skirted, at least knee-length, in a floral or polka-dot print (also hides sweat), sleeveless or cap-sleeved, boat- or V-necked.

Totally safe/boring, admittedly.

that is an exciting reason to go dress shopping! :)

i tried on a few dresses today and the best one was a cotton-stretchy number that fit like a sexy glove but i have a serious issue with paying $130+ for what is basically a t-shirt dress, even if it is locally designed blahblah. i would've gone for $70, but still. also, the sales dude totally talked to me about all kinds of things the entire time i was in the store and kept talking to me while i was trying stuff on! i kid you not.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 14 August 2011 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

Bought 4 dresses at you-know-where in MI. All are knit/stretch, all will basically be much like wearing pajamas. Two Calvin Kleins, incl this one (if this works):

Cute! :D

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 14 August 2011 21:26 (twelve years ago) link

That herringbone-print one is p cheesy and strictly for work, for no-brainer days. The CK ones are awesome, though -- can't find the other, but it's a sheath dress with a red sleeveless bodice and a black bottom, with one vertical ruffle down the side of the skirt.

one month passes...

easy dress i just bought:

http://www.soma.com/Product_Images/570025157_5981_normal.jpg

princess seams YAY (they always fit me better), bamboo blend jersey is soft and comfy, and somehow it doesn't look like a maternity dress on me despite the empire waistline. victory!

also: it's not black. most of my wardrobe is black and i would like to vary it up more but with the sort of stuff i wear, it always ends up being more black.

I have a wedding to go to the weekend after next and I need a dress. I'd like it to be between $50-$100 but I know that's a tall order. :( This is stressful. I am thinking LBD because I'd like it to be something I wear often maybe even to work but just with different accessories. HALP. I will search later and maybe post some possible candidates once I get out of this THREE HOUR MEETING. :(

i am thinking of having this dress made for me for the holiday season. y/n?

EN, if you need it by the weekend after next, just go SHOPPING? Surely somewhere there will be an LBD that could work.

By the time something comes in the mail, if it doesn't fit, there won't be much time to return it for another size or get something else?

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:29 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, you're totally right. I just really hate trying on clothes in stores and am easily overwhlemed so I want to look around online and maybe have a couple things in mind when I go shopping which will most likely wind up being the night before or morning of the wedding since I can never seem to do anything before the absolute last minute.

your mom the burrito (ENBB), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:30 (twelve years ago) link

Nordstrom's search results for "little black dress" between $50 and 100.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

I have this CK LBD and it's like wearing wonderful pajamas, but I always wear a foundation layer underneath (spanx or stockings cut into shorts) and I have to stand up straight. I usually belt it because it's too tall for me but it'd prob be perfect for you!

There's a little bit of ruching on one hip that makes the front not lie COMPLETELY smoothly so it appears to drape slightly. Win/win imo.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

I got it at TJ Maxx in Aug, btw, and it was NOT no one hundred dollars.

Xp Stockings cut into shorts! I thought I was the only one. Great, ghetto spanx. I actually ordered spans this week, excited to finally have the real deal!

Being stuck in Canadia I cannot help with the dress hunt E but I know you will look fab!!
