WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT GALLAGHER . .

Liam Gallagher: “I’m not a**** with what he’s doing. I’m sure it will all be very civilised and grown-up. His gigs will be like those that you can really stroke your chin at.”

Robbie Williams: “Noel’s run out of other people’s ideas.”

Damon Albarn: “Noel used to take the p*** out of me and it really, really hurt.”

Justin Hawkins (lead singer of The Darkness): “Noel Gallagher is an overrated guitarist losing his grip on his credibility who just has to fire shots on his way down. It’s kind of a shame, really.”

Elton John: “He’s an absolute t***** and he looks like Parker from Thunderbirds.”

Apparently, Noel and Damon bumped into each other in a club, buried hatchet, became mates again.

anyway, I have heard the album.

It's pretty dull, really. The newest single is alright.

Mark G, Friday, 28 October 2011 13:59 (twelve years ago) link

Much better than anything involving Liam the past years. Noel is not the great songwriter he used to be in the mid 90s, but I like the way he has at least tried to pay attention to production values. The somewhat "smoother" sound fits him.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 28 October 2011 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

The Beady Eye album is better.

Mark G, Friday, 28 October 2011 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

Not at all. The Beady Eye album is too rock'n'roll. And it has the pathetic loser Liam Gallagher on it.

Avril Lavigne had a fairly prominent Toronto music critic banned from her gig this week too!

I imagine Noel's High Flying Birds vs Liam's Beady Eye would be one of the least shit given about ILM polls of all time.
Such a long way from selling 1/4 million tickets in a morning to publicly slating each other's work to attempt to garner interest.

Yeah, I was into Oasis a lot longer than I should've bothered, in retrospect, but even I can't be bothered to give a shit at this point. Bought the Beady Eye album, but only because I found a promo copy for like 2 bucks.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 28 October 2011 14:18 (twelve years ago) link

I bought the 12" of 'Live Forever' and that's it. I care about Noel and Liam arguing about which of their albums is better about as much as I care about two tramps arguing over whether Tennants is better than Special Brew.

Local Christian Blues (schlump), Friday, 28 October 2011 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

That Robbie quote would be pretty barbed if it couldn't be applied to him equally as much. Hard to imagine Damon giving a shit about what anyone thought about him, ever. It says something about Noel's downward trajectory when even Justin Hawkins can get a jab in. What's next, criticism from Crispin Urqhart Newton Taylor from Kula Shaker? And trust Elton to get in the bitchiest (and funniest) comment. Rich coming from someone who looks like a grown up Jimmy Krankie.

It says something about Noel's downward trajectory when even Justin Hawkins can get a jab in.

it doesn't really though, does it

you could also state that it says something about both of those artists when even pun-loving ilx user 'snoball', who is decidedly less famous than either, can get a jab in

We All Had Guess Papers (DJ Mencap), Friday, 28 October 2011 14:37 (twelve years ago) link

I think those comments are very old. Certainly, the Elton one is.

Mark G, Friday, 28 October 2011 14:38 (twelve years ago) link

anyway this was supposed to be about the comedy value of the newspaper making out that them not getting review tickets for a concert is (a) a 'news story' and (b) something Noel Gallagher had any input in or awareness of

new single is surprisingly fun it's like a cross between Plastic Bertrand/Slade/The Wombles/Ricky Martin and apparently it has pissed off a large part of his fanbase.
If you heard it on the radio you probably wouldnt even know it was Noel.

I'm glad I had my turn-of-the-century Oasis fan experiences but I wish people would stop calling the Gallaghers brilliant/funny/intelligent interviewees.

“Our government are seemingly powerless to fucking stop this shit,” said Gallagher recent attacks. “I have children and they’re growing up in London and they take the tube, I take the tube – we all take public transport because I can’t drive.

“And there’s bombers roaming free around the whole fucking city and the government and the one before them and the one after that will be powerless to stop it because of some hippy ideal about people’s religious beliefs.”

[...]

Speaking of his emotional performance, Gallagher added: “‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ was already a fucking huge anthem before that fucking Islamic fucking goon put that bomb in the arena.

“When I was singing it at the Manchester concert a little part of you was like ‘fucking wow’, but then a bigger part of you was thinking I wish this had never happened in the first place and you’d prefer the song was just as it was.”

I'm liking some of this new HFB album, which I haven't able to say about anything NG-related since Morning Glory. "Black & White Sunshine" is a highlight and has that lovely Kevin Shieldsy guitar bit in the chorus. "If Love is the Law" is a decent attempt to be Fleet Foxes. After further listening, I might be led to go so far as to say the album is good, but I'll remain tentative for now.

Freedom, Monday, 27 November 2017 09:40 (six years ago) link

not a huge oasis fan myself, but did you not like any of these:

"D'You Know What I Mean?"
"Stand by Me"
"Go Let It Out"
"Fuckin' in the Bushes"
"Stop Crying Your Heart Out"
"Little by Little"

niels, Monday, 27 November 2017 10:22 (six years ago) link

"Little by Little" is atrocious. "D'You Know What I Mean" and "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" are merely bad. "Go Let it Out" is passable. "Stand by Me" is almost good. FITB I don't remember. I don't actively like any of them. Apart from the plodding chorus, "All Around the World" off BHN is one of NG's better chord sequences/melodies, but that was also an old song by the time it was released.

Freedom, Monday, 27 November 2017 10:30 (six years ago) link

"Stop Crying Your Heart Out" always sounded to me like someone saying "look, here's a tenner, now pissoff"

Mark G, Monday, 27 November 2017 10:36 (six years ago) link

'Stand By Me' and 'Fuckin' in the Bushes' are both great, IMO.

Anyway, I've given the new High Flying Birds album a listen but the mastering is so hot it's borderline unlistenable - shame, sounds like the most "adventurous" thing he's done in ages.
