hey guys this kind of sounds like shit! like from a sonic perspective i think it sounds pretty shitty. i want to do a self recorded project and this is my first little demo, just figuring out how to work protools etc...
but it's kinda bumming me out...i dunno...any advice?
― the beta banned (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 16:00 (twelve years ago) link
i like it. sort of starts out sounding like a tears for fears demo or something. (can't really help with the sonic stuff -- i am pretty dumb about all of that).
― tylerw, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 16:07 (twelve years ago) link
haha tears for fears demo! that's not far off
yeah it just feel like...muddy or something to me
i damn near just want to get a cassette four track because at least that's a defined sound and aesthetic
― the beta banned (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 16:15 (twelve years ago) link
yeah i've thought about breaking out ye olde 4 track recently. i was even worse with that thing, but working within those limitations started sounding kind of appealing.
― tylerw, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 16:24 (twelve years ago) link
have you done much eq on it? it sounds like there are a lot of non-bass instruments that could use a low-cut filter, and maybe you could make sure they're not competing for the same space around the low mids. but i think it sounds clear enough, depending on what you're going for of course.
― hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 17:07 (twelve years ago) link
no jordan, don't know much about EQing...the bass i used this preset on the 36 band EQ plugin called "Bass DI Helper" because I was going direct in with the bass, and that seemed to help...
i'll check for maybe a "low cut filter" on the keyboards, but i think you might be on the right track, maybe that's the muddiness
i guess it sounds ok, this was basically just a test track to get myself acquainted with doing something resembling a "song"
― the beta banned (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 17:35 (twelve years ago) link
this could be a whole other thread, but maybe try playing around with an eq, like doing exaggerated boosts in a small frequency area just to see where a given instrument lives. i cut everything below ~400 - 500 hz on all kinds of non-bass tracks, but especially vocals and percussion/samples.

thanks! very helpful advice

Ha, replace the "4" with an "a" for the URL.
("Tension and Extension" is probably the most 'difficult' track btw.)

Tension and Extension is my favorite. Sounds great.
St3ve Go1db3rg Those string quartets are great, I hate taking the 'musical director' role. I'm always so afraid of sounding like a wanker (past experience being on the receiving end with a shitty borrowed baritone saxophone I guess) but you got it down

Supposed to be writing a review, but of course procrastination took over. Forgive the rubbish singing and the mistakes - just a bit of fun. Two rough beginnings of songs, plus a vocal version of the fingerstyle track I posted a few months back.

I do have a couple of warmed up practice tapes with our new drummer here. It's pretty much live practice demos with a couple overdubs then mixed.

What do you guys think of these tracks I made in Reason?
http://soundcloud.com/doglatin/sandalled-vandalThis one is on its way to completion, but it needs something else in there. Not sure what? OTher than an ending of course...
And here's a pleasant sounding little loop I've been struggling to write all day:http://soundcloud.com/doglatin/hertford-loop
I'd really like to get a track actually completed for once, so any comments/ideas most welcome.

That first track sounds p good, but yeah, could use that extra subbass you mention.
― skrillex pretend (The Reverend), Monday, 19 September 2011 03:00 (twelve years ago) link
Dog Latin, I like 'Hertford Loop' as a sound sculpture very much! Could listen to that longer.
I agree that the first track, which has a sick rhythm, could do with some extra "flair" maybe, but I hope you won't abandon it!
Though hearing you play guitar makes me wish you could somehow bridge guitar, singing and beats (without becoming James Blake). You are showing true potential on a whole range of areas here!

Che LBI and the Rev. I've expanded Hertford Loop into more of a structured piece now, just needs a bit of icing.
LBI: as for playing and singing and electronic stuff, I made this album a couple of years ago in my room. Parts are quite sketchy and amateurish and the first song is awful, but if you are interested: http://mightysandyheathtransmitters.bandcamp.com/album/catgut-beefsteak-and-pride

"Che" = Cheers
MIXING IS SO F-ING HARD!!!
trying to mix my "little dog" track for the ilx covers loutallica project
it's like, on one hand, stuff like protools has made it super easy to just get stuff down to the point where ppl are like "yes that is a song" but it's that extra level of knowledge about compressors and EQ and stuff that really makes a good mix a good mix is what's missing! really irritating because i can hear in my head how it *should* be but i can't make it like that
in my darkest moments i'm honestly considering mixing this stupid joke metallica song at a professional studio haha

i'm a lot more confident in my mixing than i was a year ago, but still not totally happy with any of my solo in-the-box mixes. doing a thing now where i'm sending stems (mostly groups of synths and vocals) to an engineer for him to bounce down to tape, then i combine those with my original bass & drum stems for a final mix. it has a nice analog summing effect and i still get to obsess over the final balance of everything.
