my shirts are not fun, but what is the general opinion on plain pink shirts? is this something you can only get away with in a trad business/banking environment?

oh, yeah there were a collab between visionaire and lacoste. they got a bunch of artists to make 'em. were super expensive, but got em at the 2nd hand store here in brooklyn for like $18 each! hoping more will pop up there. though i think the three i got are the three i like the best. wouldn't mind the tennis one or perhaps the vegas one.

I really love photo-print clothing, although I guess it depends on the picture. I have a cute tshirt of a field of poppies and blue sky.
Nearly typed 'poopies' then.

hawaiian prints are having a moment and it could work with the right mix, someone should make one and get rich in blog dollars

hawaiian prints are having a moment

lol i have noticed-- topman was carrying these not too long ago, and at $45 each that shit is embarrassing.

two of the legacy hawaiian shirt designers here launched "modern" collections in the last few years with slimmer fits and prints aimed at younger hipper dudes:

http://www.reynspooner.com/collections/modern.html
http://www.toririchard.com/browse.cfm/56/2,46.html

i have a few from each but i still only wear them to work, and i think there's still an untapped market that they're not yet reaching.

maybe fun aloha shirts can be a part of that.

who wants to move to hawaii and start a shirt company with me?

♆ (gr8080), Friday, 29 June 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

I thought we got complimentary shirts w aloha friday

Faith in Humanity: Restored (dayo), Friday, 29 June 2012 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

oh man srsly

hawaiian prints are having a moment and it could work with the right mix, someone should make one and get rich in blog dollars

haha i bought two p sweet hawaiin print shirts at a thrift store this spring, theyre p garish compared to the 'modern' reyn spooner stuff that gr8 linked but ive worn them out a few times to things

mostly i only think of the john waters simpsons episodes when i wear them tho

Lamp, Friday, 29 June 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

obv context is a big part of fashion/style so wearing a garish hawaiian print in a continental metropolis isnt the crime it is here

i still think there's a market that's not being tapped-- someone who could design shit i can wear to work and look professional but stylish, and also shit dudes can wear on vacation, or just worldwide summertime styles

♆ (gr8080), Friday, 29 June 2012 16:46 (eleven years ago) link

i have to admit that after years of adhering to a no patterns or garish colors rule i am sort of hankering for some kind of well-designed hawaiian print shirts

max, Friday, 29 June 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

I thought we got complimentary shirts w aloha friday

fun fact: the term "Aloha Friday," Aloha/Hawaiian Shirts, and "Casual Fridays" are all intertwined historically:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloha_shirt

In 1965, Bill Foster, Sr., president of the Hawaii Fashion Guild, led the organization in a campaign lobbying for "Aloha Friday", a day employers would allow men to wear aloha shirts on the last business day of the week a few months out of the year.[8] Aloha Friday officially began in 1966,[9] and young adults of the 1960s embraced the style, replacing the formal business wear favored by previous generations. By 1970, aloha wear had gained acceptance in Hawaii as business attire for any day of the week.[7]

Hawaii's custom of Aloha Friday slowly spread east to California, continuing around the globe until the 1990s, when it became known as Casual Friday.[7][8] Today in Hawaii, alohawear is worn as business attire for any day of the week, and "Aloha Friday" is generally used to refer to the last day of the work week.[7] Now considered Hawaii's term for "Thank God It's Friday" (TGIF),[10]

yeah i realize the connotations are way different, although again i still mostly think of homers 'gay guys or big fat party animals' rule w/r/t hawaiian shirts...

when i looked at the stuff you linked i was sorta sad to see it was mostly fairly muted colors/patterns with that faded, washed out look. lots of like navajo print stuff thats around did the same thing really backgrounded whats interesting about the prints in order to make them more wearable? idk.

Lamp, Friday, 29 June 2012 16:55 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i agree. trying too hard to make it 'tasteful' when thats not really the point i dont think

max, Friday, 29 June 2012 16:56 (eleven years ago) link

my dad just sold a 90s rayon hawaiian thing on ebay for 60£. crazy.

caek, Friday, 29 June 2012 17:03 (eleven years ago) link

that's what you wear here! lots of manufacturers actually sew shirts inside out, so the print is on the inside, and the muted reverse is on the outside.

here's one of my louder prints (that i dont wear to work)

on the left, right-side out (the way it was designed to be worn) and on the right inside-out (for lols)
