and they certainly weren't playing that great yesterday, regardless of their normal talent set.

Pats played a sensible, no-risk game against a team they knew they could contain on defense. the only time i was concerned on either side of the ball was when Cassel kept getting sacked over and over again in the 3rd quarter, like he needed 30 seconds to make a pass. but i was impressed that all that time he didn't do anything stupid with the ball.

the biggest question mark was over Maroney. a lot of running backs had bad weekends and he was down there with the worst of them.

^^^^ what is this

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 September 2008 20:36 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm sure they're skilled and they're most certainly well-coached, but they haven't really played anyone approaching good, have they?

the regular season is what, 10 days old?

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

and they certainly weren't playing that great yesterday, regardless of their normal talent set.

no, they weren't great but they weren't terrible either. the biggest blunder i can recall was the moss(?) catch across the middle of the field. run defense was acceptable, esp. when it was apparent they were defending against the pass every down. i definitely do not like it when a defense plays down to the level of their opponent though, makes it too hard to ratchet it up against a good team.

one thing i noticed yesterday about the pats defensive rotation, jerod mayo was the only linebacker in every package. maybe because he's the only one with an age lower than his uniform number but he was in there the whole f'ing game.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

you are too defensive! we're just saying, they looked average. not bad. not good. just ok.* no blunders but nothing special either, and the main reason the jets looked really bad was less to do with great defense than it was to do with st. brett being a mental patient.

* this is because they are all john mccain's age, obviously.

ugh, i am terribly familiar with teams playing down to the level of their opponent, i was worried the stupid giants were going to do that yesterday and just squeak out this small victory against a team as terrible as the damned rams because that is what they ALWAYS do but hurrah someone woke the dummies up.

anyway, it is not like the ancient status of their defense is going to give them a .500 or less record, i mean wouldn't worry if i was you. hell, the only reason you might not win the division is because buffalo is suddenly thinking it is awesome for some reason.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 September 2008 21:12 (fifteen years ago) link

but mainly i think the reason everyone is pointing out that the pats weren't looking tooooo hot yesterday is because everyone loves it when brett favre goes into "touched" mode.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 September 2008 21:12 (fifteen years ago) link

schef, we're saying the same thing, the pats d did what they always do, give up huge gains then hold on for dear life in the red zone.

the d kind of reminds me of the 2005 pats where they tried to turn it on and turn it off like a faucet despite there never being one team in the history of the league to have had any success at doing that. THAT concerns me more than the loss of brady actually. at least you know the o-line and qb won't be taking any plays off.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

i think that their d has been better than this, previously. but they are so olllldddd that i feel bad for them, sometimes. and yes, agreed re: brady.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 September 2008 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it definitely has been. the d-backfield isn't as bad as i feared it would be going into the season though.

luckily for them they have a bye week in miami coming up then have week 4 off.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 21:26 (fifteen years ago) link

lol miami when will they get kicked out of the league already?
