beggin-ass keith (The Reverend), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 18:28 (fifteen years ago) link

my coworker said something was frozen in her car and made a terrible noise

still no snow down here

jergins, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Still in the shop today ;_;

I drove a zipcar up north yesterday - it was so cool to see the fluffy swirls of snow on the freeway!

Jaq, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 18:30 (fifteen years ago) link

It's really snowing up here!

kate78, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link

not a flake in the city. it was kinda sunny out even

jergins, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Seattle got effeciently shadowed by the Olympic Mtns. this morning.. which I didn't mind, since the commute wasn't pure hell, just slight hell. (Half of Ballard was on my bus, since their express bus didn't show up.)

I am prepared to walk home to Fremont from downtown after work though, if we do get snow. The buses will be delayed big time because they're only allowed to put chains when they get "the call" i.e. it's too late (I think it's union rules in question, but I could be wrong.)

Gino-Vanellyville (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I like how all the local news sites re: high 30s temperatures are all ITS A TRAP! (the temps are going to dip back down again this afternoon.. convergence zones u so crazy)

Gino-Vanellyville (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I hate it when the damn buses get delayed. Even the last few days I've seen delays just due to more people taking the bus, I guess. I don't have the luxury of walking home tonight.

my coworker said something was frozen in her car and made a terrible noise

Hahah. I had to read this a couple of times before I realized you meant something in the inner workings of the car rather than some random item in the back seat that froze and made a terrible noise!

Beehive Reptile (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Jaq you can borrow my car while I'm in Denver next week. (Barring a city debilitating 3rd round "snow event"/ Seatac running completely out of de-icer at any price, etc. that keeps me here)

the higgs, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Aw, you're a complete doll to offer! I just heard from Mr. Jaq, who has been following up w/ the mechanics - sounds like we will have it back in time for my interviews on Friday (!!!!!WOOT!!!!!), so I think it will be fine.

Yeah, Mr. Jaq's didn't show up, and there were two CT flexers jack-knifed across 2nd Ave when he was down at the stop. Things look like they're running okay on 4th Ave through downtown (though not so much on the steep cross streets!).

Jaq, in the top photo, what is the building on the left that's all lit up with the huge windows? if that's the same street I'm thinking of, I used to walk down it from 5th and Jackson to get to the 2nd Ave Ext bus stop and I don't recognize it (although it's been a long time).

That said, you can't really recognize Fremont today. At least you can make out downtown clearly.

Jaq, WONDERFUL pics!

Also, didn't notice the sparrow flying away in the Columbia Tower pic

Jaq, in the top photo, what is the building on the left that's all lit up with the huge windows?

That's the main fire department. Definitely on the way from 5th to the 2nd Ave Ext stop, but 2 blocks north of Jackson. The street in front of it is Washington.

Jaq, Thursday, 18 December 2008 17:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Heh - I just noticed that reflection of the lamp I didn't turn off, floating eerily above the train tunnel in that first pic.

JoyGoat, how are you doing?

I heard Spokane got 17 inches in 24 hours... and now is at 24 inches and still falling?

Jaq, Thursday, 18 December 2008 19:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not sure what Spokane got - I'm about an hour south - but we had a couple of inches on the stairs this morning, nothing too bad. It's crazy to see Seattle covered in snow though.

I grew up in Upper Michigan and basically it looks like pretty much every day between November and March there look outside now - white, grey, snowing just because it can, cold but not amazingly so. It's fun a couple times a year but I'm done with it already.

a better command of the mummy language (joygoat), Thursday, 18 December 2008 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm in the Wallingford library. Like downtown and the near north, it's still snowing, but not bitterly cold, accumulating very slowly, up to about 3 or 4 inches where it ain't mashed down by cars n feet. Nice. Went to FUCKING work this FUCKING morning, stood at the bus stop for over an hour before finally catching a 16, but when in finally FUCKING got there, it was closed for the day. Locked up in ways I can't access, so there I was, on the street, in the snow. THANKS FOR THE FUCKING PHONE CALL, GUYS! Umm, nice to have that outta my system. Wish I had pix for y'all, but no goes. Hang tight and be strong.

I've never seen it snow for this long in the city center since I moved here. I have old skool Seattle co-workers that are saying this is the biggest snow hit since 1996.

"Sustainability Sucks" T's Ahoy For Urban Outfitters Bootches (Mackro Mackro), Thursday, 18 December 2008 21:41 (fifteen years ago) link

haha, Contenderizer, I walked down to be dissed by two filled 17 buses in a row. I briskly walked over to the Fremont Ave/Dexter Ave corner in hopes of 26 and 28 buses. I FINALLY got let onto one of them, and then the driver dissed everyone waiting after me. I was really lucky, considering I was planning to walk all the way to downtown from Fremont.

I'm DJing at Havana tonight if you want to escape the cold.. from 7pm to 9pm. Just Happy Hour Djing.. I will nonetheless be walking there from downtown, lol.

Good shots, Mackro - I like the one with the old Federal building in the background.

I got a reprieve from busing it up to Mountlake Terrace today - they said if they really needed me there, they'd come get me. Mr. Jaq gave up on the SB 23 this morning after none showed up for 45 minutes. He's headed up to 8th and Blanchard now (hopefully on a tunnel bus and the SLUT) to get the car, which supposedly is fixed.

There was a deep quick snow on MLK day in either 2001 or 2002 - we were driving up to Vancouver BC and didn't think we'd be able to make it to the freeway from Madrona - iirc there was 3-4" that fell in about 2 hours. The brunt of it might have missed downtown though and just stuck near the lake. And we did get dumped on once in south Seattle 2 years ago, but that was only 2" or so.

Jaq, Thursday, 18 December 2008 22:40 (fifteen years ago) link

OK, so did you guys hear the apparently humongous thundersnow strike this morning?

I slept through it, but apparently I can sleep through loud noise.

But while you unfortunately can't see it, it was caught live on King5 just in audio. It was loud enough such that it apparently felt like an earthquake in Capitol Hill/Central District area.

There hasn't been as much snow at once as there was in 96, but this is the first time in my life where it has repeatedly snowed over a week-long period. Usually it just snows for one or two days and then melts away.

Got stuck waiting an extra half an hour for a bus from Everett to Lynnwood yesterday and then ended up having to hike it a couple miles from Lynwood Transit Center to my apt. : /
