Man, I love seeing this thread pop up new, and that rush of hope that a new album's imminent. Thanks for making my morning.

Beautiful song. Got it last year on .mp3 when it was briefly available as a download. Will be buying this single post haste.

saw them last night in stripped-down mode. easily the best show this year, and possibly one of my favourite shows ever

his voice sounded amazing and it was wall-to-wall hits. opened with 'all you wanted' which had me in raptures

Any news on an album?

from a couple of recent interviews it sounds like an album is definitely being planned, but still being written so somewhat of a way off

The small personal details about his son's life, unlived, paired with the black and white images, are shredding.

_No Song, No Spell, No Madrigal_ is better than my high expectations expected.

I had no idea! Song's great; his voice sounds remarkably unchanged.

this is better than drift. and drift for me is really a kind of auditive madeleine. when i listened to it first in 1994 we were on our first holiday tour in les landes. more than 20 years ago. it's incredible how time flies.

I checked out 'No Song...' out of curiosity and think it's great. Haven't properly heard any of the older stuff (just some clips on eMusic). Any recommendations?

Love the cover art on it.

No Song...the most devastatingly sad yet beautiful album I've ever listened to. Trouble is, it's almost too painful to listen to!

yugi ex, Thursday, 22 September 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

Missed last year's request for recommendations. YMMV, but A Life Full of Farewells is my go-to, then either Apart or Drift, then The Evening Visits...

FYI, Mr. Walsh has a show next month (October 16) at the Make Out Room in San Francisco.

From his FB page: Stateside friends. I'll be doing a solo set in San Francisco, Sunday 16th October, my first show in the US playing Apartments songs. The club's called the Make Out Room—a beautiful room. San Francisco's Sea Dramas (drama was once my North, my South, my East, my West etc.) are playing at 8pm, I'll be on at 9pm. Doors 7pm. (Not the band The Doors—just plain wooden doors).

Fete Foraine, the live album, is now being reissued via Microcultures. Remastered and a lyric sheet not in the original version.

Drift is also recieving the reissue/remaster love at Talitres, with three bonus tracks added to the release.

PMW's also been playing shows with Amanda Brown and another gent. Lots of activity.

The second song "Thank You For Making Me Beg" is such a beauty. They still have it in them. What a great underappreciated band.

It's kind of wild that this is only the sixth album of new Apartments originals.

This is really good - musically pretty much on a par with ‘No Spell’ (imho) but maybe not quite the same lyrical/emotional punch - but I don’t think that’s a criticism or issue at all.

michaellambert, Friday, 25 September 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

Agreed on the solidness. While I wish PMW was more prolific, this was worth the wait. His voice is right up with Paul Buchanan for me, as far as instant transport to a particular mood. "hold on...no feeling is final" in "Write Your Way Out of Town", eyes welling. The trumpet in "The Fading Light", "Pocketful of Sunshine", and "We Talked Through Till Dawn" is lovely. This'll sync up nicely with A Girl Called Eddy on the year-end list.

Ha, was just thinking the new album is as close as chamber pop gets to The Blue Nile. So pretty.

maybe 10-15 years I saw the apartments live and I think it's the only show that I've thought suffered from having too many good songs

like the usual set has peaks and troughs but this was just blinder after blinder, I felt really quite emotionally overwhelmed afterwards

I underrated the new album - hitting me really hard tonight. Quiet, graceful and beautifully low key compared to the more demonstrative emotional register of the previous album.
