Same with Walter Hagen, Arnold Palmer and Tom Morris Jr. Not sure your point.

funny old round of golf today... played along with very amiable retiree from RSA, scratch golfer and all round nice person. very pleasant way to spend a sunday afternoon, playing golf and getting the inside view on apartheid-era pro-am golf

doesn't really capture the majesty of the happenstance but w/e

nice, any insights you'd like to share?

got a $25 gift certificate to a sporting goods store and thinking about buying a new putter (first one in 20 years)

no really stunning insights tbf, standard stuff about how he couldn't get a handicap because he wasnt allowed to compete in medals and he played on sand greens because the courses didn't have equipment to maintain actual greens. said he was scratch/+1 throughh the 70s and 60s. just a nice coincidence that of al the people you could be partnered with on a wet sun in glasgow...he's probably far and away more interesting (and nice) than 2 nd place.

what's the deal with the milled face on those putters?

anyone betting on the open? mcdowell is about 30-1 in some places, looks worth an e/w.

LocalGarda, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 10:31 (twelve years ago) link

Good man, thanks for the tip!

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 10:33 (twelve years ago) link

Dad basically called me a pussy the other day for not wanting to play in 100ΒΊ heat.

Can't wait to get the phone call from the Burns Park Clubhouse that I need to go collect a body from the 14th green.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 14:59 (twelve years ago) link

I love it when it gets super hot cos it means the course nearest to me is completely deserted unlike the last 5 times I've tried to play in the last 2 weeks where I've had to walk in before the 10th due to slow fucks playing in fucking 4 balls in front of me!

pandemic, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 22:25 (twelve years ago) link

Looking v tricky at The Open. I actually played Lytham a couple of times over a decade ago. Didn't really like it much tbh Too many blind shots for me. Greens way smaller than they seemed on TV.
Rocky start for Rory. +1 after 3 holes and facing a 12 footer for par on the 4th.

is ryan moore wearing... a hoodie?!

government d/n (cozen), Thursday, 14 July 2011 10:25 (twelve years ago) link

just put

5 e/w on poulter 50-1
5 e/w on mcdowell at 25-1
5 e/w on ricky fowler at 66-1 (who has just birdied)

paddy power paying out for places on the top 7.

LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 July 2011 10:35 (twelve years ago) link

Long odds on Poulter. Has he been off the boil/ an issue with links golf?

Neil S, Thursday, 14 July 2011 10:39 (twelve years ago) link

kinda off the boil i think

LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 July 2011 10:41 (twelve years ago) link

Thomas bjorn -5 after 18. Be surprised if anyone tops that today. Luke donald even through 12. Lol British Summer (half the players in wooly hats)
Re garda's bets - think those are v good odds on fowler top7. Gmac been a bit meh this year and managed a 9! last week.
God if only sergio could putt.

pandemic, Thursday, 14 July 2011 11:28 (twelve years ago) link

Poulter needs a par for a 69, so looking good Garda. And he got it. -1 after 18.

pandemic, Thursday, 14 July 2011 12:31 (twelve years ago) link

yeah been keeping a loose eye on it despite few minor faffs in work/life all day, poults at -1 sitting pretty. fowler slipped back which is a shame, but still well in it really at level par. if even one of those came through could make a nice few quid.

LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 July 2011 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

frickin old ass dudes like calcavecchia & jimenez always shoot well in the brit open its kinda wild

johnny crunch, Thursday, 14 July 2011 14:14 (twelve years ago) link

yeah was just thinking that, is it cos of weather/links that experience helps? where's ken brown when you need him?

LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 July 2011 14:32 (twelve years ago) link

Calc is always up there in first round of the british. I know he,s a past champion but I've never really associated his game with links golf. Westwood +3 and looking poor.

pandemic, Thursday, 14 July 2011 14:47 (twelve years ago) link

i think it was 2 yrs ago when calc was still very in the mix the last day and fell apart. yeah i dont really get it either

johnny crunch, Thursday, 14 July 2011 14:59 (twelve years ago) link

so hows it work, david duval gets to keep playing in majors until he shoots or turns 85?

johnny crunch, Thursday, 14 July 2011 17:02 (twelve years ago) link

so totally dud, was bummed when my dad took it up in his old age

All previous Open Champions who will be age 60 or under on the final day of the tournament.

pandemic, Thursday, 14 July 2011 17:04 (twelve years ago) link

That's just for the Open tho, dunno about the other Majors. He probably doesn't qualify for the Masters.

pandemic, Thursday, 14 July 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

my bets all looking in good shape

LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

didn't see much today but who is the guy who looks like justin bieber? not a good golf look.

you've got male (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

ricky fowler!

LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:50 (twelve years ago) link

20 yr old amateur joint leading was ice cold on the back 9.
Yeah GMac's birdie-birdie finish leaves you well placed Garda.

That McDowell bet is looking good, even if he does have a weird NI-American accent.

Neil S, Thursday, 14 July 2011 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

Aw man Tom Watson just got an ace!

There's a lot of Ulster in the "American accent" anyway... not surprisingly perhaps

tom watson hole in one, amazing! what a guy.

mcdowell doing his best to end his chances today.

LocalGarda, Friday, 15 July 2011 10:19 (twelve years ago) link

Conditions look perfect but no-one really tearing up the course yet. Greens as quick as I've seen them at an Open in quite some time.

Didn't realise Sandwich was still a men-only club. Fuck letting them have the Open.

dave lool (Noodle Vague), Friday, 15 July 2011 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

You're joking? Really! Don't know why I'm surprised, it was less than 10 years ago that the club I belong to had us vote on extending membership to women. Kinda mindblowing to me as I assumed there already were women members. Then again I only ever play the course by myself, really don't do the social thing.

pandemic, Friday, 15 July 2011 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

just came up on the radio commentary. am honestly surprised that they've been kept on the roster.

The logic here totally escapes me.

Total classic. I played 9 holes yesterday at a company outing with a new driver I won at a raffle-Cobra L4VX. im friggin killing the ball.

wow, nice sand save by RM on 18

lol did anyone hear hazel irvine say "From Northern Ireland, Graeme McDowell has won the US Open, and Rory McIlroy too. Maybe if Darren Clarke can win this, they'll all stop fighting."
