I'm 6'2 but I make up for it by having no other alpha characteristics of note / sucking at basketball + having to justify my sucking

also I will own you at soccer (unless you are a foreigner)

iatee, Saturday, 18 June 2011 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

i are a foreigner, you will probably own me at football anyway.

being tallish doesn't help me there. plus i slouch so no-one actually thinks i am as tall as i am.

i rarely notice how tall people are unless they are ridiculously tall or a guy my height or less. my last bf was 6'3" and i only ever noticed the height diff when i looked at a photo of us side by side and though omg we look ridiculous together. or adorable, of course. sometimes i thought that.

i'm 5'2" and it rules except when my neck hurts from craning it to talk to giants or i can't communicate with ppl because i can't hear them from way down here

yeah it doesn't bother me at all except sometimes i feel like ppl don't take me seriously. that's probably my fault on a number of levels though.

J0rdan I have met you before iirc, and the thought that you were short never even crossed my mind. i don't think you've got anything to worry about.

and for people that really are noticeably short, it's nothing to feel bad about anyway. People that let someone else's height affect the way they treat them are irredeemable assholes. (i guess i'm pretty bullish on this point because i was the shortest kid in school until 10th grade and had to come to terms with it)

I love short people even though I sometimes feel like a clumsy Godzilla around them.

jed_, Saturday, 18 June 2011 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

90% of the time I am happy not to be short but sometimes, esp after hanging with little ladies, I feel gigantic and wish I were small

yeah me too. i had some roommates in college who were v petite and tiny and could be really girly at times, and i felt so awkward by comparison. took me many years to be able to get dressed up on occasion/wear heels/makeup without feeling like a ridiculous fool

daria-g, Saturday, 18 June 2011 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

I thought I was 5'9" for years but I recently learned that a more accurate measurement of my height is 5'7". It kind of fucked with me!

My best guy friend in high school was 5'3" (or maybe shorter?) and I was always doing things like
- throw a ball and it bounces the wrong way and hits his portable CD player and breaks it
- go rollerskating together and fall on top of him, knocking over him
- trip on some stairs at his house and knock over his even smaller mom
- other clumsy Godzilla things

free inappropriate education (Abbbottt), Saturday, 18 June 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

I am really short and often find it hard to follow conversations and thought I was just developing hearing problems, thank u thread

though, my hearing is deteriorating too (if I switch ears when I'm on the phone the difference in sound timbre is jarring), and I've always found it difficult to follow people over background noise or other people talking, so shortness may not be much of an excuse in my case

sambal dalek (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 18 June 2011 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

in the michael lewis book the big short theres a guy who thinks all his social problems stem from the fact that he has a glass eye, until he realizes that hes autistic

ice cr?m, Saturday, 18 June 2011 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

One of many clumsy (6') Godzilla stories:
I was walking down the street with a friend. We were talking and I was so engrossed in the conversation that I wasn't looking where I was going. Two other guys doing exactly the same thing (talking/not looking where they were going) were coming straight towards us. Without realising what had happened, I collided with one of the other guys and sent him flying back onto the pavement. I looked around at him, I'm confused all "what happen?!", and he's "whoa dude! nooooo! don't hit me!" like he thought I was going to beat him up, but I'm "er, sorry man, apologies and all that, I wasn't looking where I was going".

This is actually pretty interesting to me. As I said earlier I like being tall - a lot. I'm either 5'9" or 5'10" depending on who by and when I'm measured and I think that's sort of the perfect tall height for a woman. It's not so tall that it seems freakish but it's tall enough that I reap the benefits. I think that being a tall woman can be a huge benefit in terms of commanding respect and being taken seriously by men. That might sound strange but I think it's a lot easier for people to dismiss small women than it is for them to dismiss taller women and I feel like in certain situations (work, school) smaller female friends have had to work work harder at being heard and taken seriously than I have. In some ways height and physical presense = power and I think definitely benefited from being tall.

Sometimes I wish I were a little shorter because then I could wear cuter shoes and and stuff but then I realize snap out of that and realize that it's awesome. I feel like I had a bigger problem with it when I was younger. I realized this when looking through pictures and noticing that I was slouching in nearly all the ones where I was with friends. Most of my friends were between 5'0" and 5'5" so when I was a teenager I think I was really self-conscious of being the "big girl" but fuck that imo. If I find myself slouching now I make a point of straightening up.

I'm 5'7", but I think living in the Midwest (where all of these cornfed kids seem to shoot up like weeds) makes me feel shorter than I might elsewhere. I'm often the smallest guy in a room, and occasionally enough one of the shortest people, period. It really doesn't bother me much, though, except for the thing where I've heard a ton of girls express shortness as a dealbreaker. Which always seemed weird to me, as I've dated ladies of many different heights and had no issue. Not with height discrepancies, anyway.

Yeah, maybe most expressions of height as a dealbreaker I've heard were just ways of circumventing the fact that they just didn't want to date me.
