I think £40m's silly, but then I thought getting £30m for Xabi Alonso was a decent deal and look how that worked out.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 17 June 2011 10:32 (twelve years ago) link
context, ismael, points to an enormous fee. We have no other reason to sell.
Even his own agent had a lol at 22m.
― beta the drivel you know (darraghmac), Friday, 17 June 2011 10:39 (twelve years ago) link
I suppose. I'd still guess it's more likely that Spurs cave in at thirty though. £40m slots Luka in between Zidane and Figo at #6 in the alltime list, and I just can't see it, much as I love the lad.

I know what you're sayin ismael, modric doesn't get 40 goals a season or anything, but for a player of his quality on a long contract, the premium will be notable. Twice what we paid will be too little
― beta the drivel you know (darraghmac), Friday, 17 June 2011 11:05 (twelve years ago) link
Also all United or Chelsea's good players will play better with Modric in the team.
― Matt DC, Friday, 17 June 2011 11:08 (twelve years ago) link
I'd probably take 30m plus Berbatov.
It would put 'arry and Levy in a difficult position though. Unless they go out and spend all the cash, and more, on a high-profile star (either a direct replacement or another striker), it'll have a knock-on effect on our ability to keep people like Bale and VDV. I can't see someone like Pastore or Cavani joining. How many players of Modric's calibre would come?
― модный хипстер (ShariVari), Friday, 17 June 2011 11:09 (twelve years ago) link
Don't want to twist your arm or anything. I'm more likely to play for Spurs next season (well, Alan Hutton managed it) than Spurs to get 30m plus Berbatov...
― R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 17 June 2011 11:11 (twelve years ago) link
True. I'm not sure how much United are valuing Berbatov at and how much they want to get rid of him.
― модный хипстер (ShariVari), Friday, 17 June 2011 11:13 (twelve years ago) link
exactly
Xp yeah, matt otm too. Modric is a 'missing link' player.
Truthfully though, with the forward line we played last season he's wasted. In a team the calibre of chelsea or city he'd move them up a level all by himself.
Utd prob need another midfielder as well as him though.
― beta the drivel you know (darraghmac), Friday, 17 June 2011 11:14 (twelve years ago) link
Part of me thinks £30m is reasonable, but then I remember that Chelsea just forked out £50m on Torres and I can't see Levy taking any less than £38m. Like Darragh said don't think Modric will kick up a fuss if he ends up staying so it's not essential that Spurs sell unless Levy/Harry would quite like the money to strengthen the team in other areas (frwd, gk)
― pandemic, Friday, 17 June 2011 12:09 (twelve years ago) link

the last top level central midfielder to be transferred was xabi alonso in 2009, and that was £30m for a player two years older

Not sure about that: Yaya Toure £24m, Ozil £12m (must've been more?), Meireles £10m-ish all not so far off Modric imo
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 17 June 2011 13:47 (twelve years ago) link
ozil is an amid/support striker, and in last year of contrac
touré wasn't quite proven in any given role, though he's probably found his niche now

― beta the drivel you know (darraghmac), Monday, 20 June 2011 08:33 (twelve years ago) link
'arry 'as suggested he might be after a couple of big top tops to convince Modric and Bale to stay. It'll be interesting to see where he'd want them to play. If the Leandro Damaio interest is as solid as the papers suggest and the bids for Dembele and Abel Hernandez were legit, it might not be up front, unless we're going to have a total clear-out.
― модный хипстер (ShariVari), Monday, 20 June 2011 08:44 (twelve years ago) link
Story in the Independent seems to suggest that Modric doesn't have the stomach for a fight and won't force the move, I suppose a Gareth Barry/Liverpool situation is as good as we can hope for here.
Modric and Bale are both young, we may placate them by saying we'll sell one or both later if we get another season out of them. Redknapp will be happy as it makes it likelier that Levy will be bounced into behaving like a big club - ie making a couple of big signings without having to wait for the moon on a stick to come in from the Bentley deal.
Also apparently Kia Joorabchian is involved in some way? That's not good news and is bound to annoy Levy. Like, he'd stand to get a fee if Modric was sold to Chelsea but not to another club, or something? Very dodgy.
― Matt DC, Monday, 20 June 2011 08:51 (twelve years ago) link

That looks like Redknapp and Levy are at loggerheads to me. Redknapp presumably frustrated at Levy's refusal to part without any cash without having first sold the deadwood he's put a prohibitive price tag on, when one player at a stroke could make £35m-£40m.
But at the same time we don't know who he's targeting, whether they'll come to Spurs, whether they'll actually improve the team (as opposed to replacing Kranjcars with Pienaars and making no net improvement whatsoever), and whether we'll end up with a hole in the squad and a load of unspent or wasted money at the end.
Personally I think he's trying to con Levy into getting his chequebook out. Doubt Harry likes spending an entire summer sitting around not being able to make signings.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 18 August 2011 08:44 (twelve years ago) link
It's the sort of thing that could end 'redknapp out' to me - not only undermining the public line, but shifting blame for underperformance onto Levy. The only benefit (assuming as I do that you can't possibly be better off shorn of Modric) is in getting Modric onside personally if he needs it, but even that's got a huge backhanded insult in there.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 18 August 2011 08:57 (twelve years ago) link
said for a while now that 35m spent well leaves us a better team if modric goes.
That was on condition of keeping niko, tho

There's also the possibility that Redknapp is trying to rush Chelsea into a bid they can then reject.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 18 August 2011 09:50 (twelve years ago) link
Redknapp has not really spent particularly well over his time at Spurs actually. Dunno if successful moves for Samba, Benayoun and Kalou and a failed bid for Eden Hazard will make much net improvement really.
