The Summer of '69 is one of my favorite songs ever. God help me.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 3 November 2002 04:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Another nominee: "Do You Feel Like We Do" by Peter Frampton. I know it's his most well-known song and it's also horrendously cheesy, but whenever I hear it I keep reimagining it as a Scorsese-style backdrop for a montage of illegal activity, thuggish violence and tragic, horrifying discoveries of dead people, which adds a whole other level to it. The worst examples of '70s rock hedonism can have that sort of feel to it for me.

"Executive Party" and "Executive Dance Party" by Andre Previn, on the Rollerball OST.

"Epic" by Faith No More.

"Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak.

mr. sinker likes "valley girl" haa!

the 2 phil collins songs i like -- "i don't care anymore" and "take me home"

Lou Gramm, "Midnight Blue"--LOVE that song, don't give a fuck about Foreigner or anything else he did

Eternal Flame by Bangles.

nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 3 November 2002 10:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

My token Celine Dion song is "Falling Into You", which is pretty subtle by her standards. I like it rather than love it though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 3 November 2002 12:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Of Celine, "Think Twice" has the best hook but I still don't like it much.

Dido - Here With Me

Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 3 November 2002 12:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

OMG Nathalie how can you say "Eternal Flame" is the only Bangles song you love? Have you never heard "Walk Like An Egyptian"?

Marcello Carlin: a critical resurrection of The Bangles on your blog has just become U & K.

Bic Runga - Drive

kinski (kinski), Sunday, 3 November 2002 14:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've mentioned a couple of mine previously in other threads:

Dan Fogelberg- "Another Auld Lang Syne"
Partly nostalgia (introduced to it by my college roommate, and we would sing it the rest of that year, which was one of the best for me), partly the Harry Chapin feel. It's like a bourgeois version of "Taxi". I like the theme of exs running into each other unexpectedly, the mixture of bittersweet. Has admittedly tawdry moments (the "laugh until we cried" part in the grocery store, "the snow...turned into rain" punchline, the Kenny G sax touches at the end), but that only seem to add to the magic. I've loathed most, if not all, of the rest of what I've heard from him: "Leader of the Band" and "Longer Than" are particularly dreadful. Though Chris Hillman from The Byrds covered one of his songs which I also liked, "Morning Sky".

Wham- "Freedom"
I have a respect for "Careless Whisper", but the rest of their catalog for me ranges from indifference to major annoyance. "Freedom" is a great song, though. I like the little details: the Motownish rhythm section, immensely singable chorus, and that regal trumpet solo and rhythm guitar at the end.

Journey- "Don't Stop Believing"
I don't like Steve Perry's voice, it's that pure and simple. If I did, there would be probably more I liked by them. This is their best song, by a long shot.

Peter Frampton- "I'm in You"
Lyrically laughable ("You can't buy, what we made, you and I...") and I wouldn't blame anyone if they couldn't make it past the title, but the music to this ballad is stunning. Striding, cautiously descending piano chords that moodily shift from minor to major and back again, combined with light string backing...it really makes the song.

Night Ranger- "Don't Tell Me You Love Me"
Particularly, I love the duelling guitar solos exchanged in the middle of the song (they should have used these for the Bill and Ted movies)--goofy and sweet, shredding before shredding became completely correlated with hair spray to move units. I mean Brad Gillis toured with Ozzy before this stint, right? What more legitimacy does one need...And the chorus is pure Asia. :)

Bryan Adams- "This Time"
Don't LOVE this one, but I think it is a likeable pop song, that
doesn't overstay its welcome (I have to admit, I don't even really like "Cuts Like a Knife" or "Heaven," two songs that I think probably have more proponents than this one).

The Bee Gees- "How Deep Is Your Love"
I was about 5 years old when SNFever was in full manic effect and this was perpetually on the radio. As one might expect from a 5 year-old boy into KISS and the Jim Rice-era Red Sox, I completely hated it--the pale washes of electric piano, the mewling vocals, etc. How ironic that today, after being subjected through my teens and early adulthood to endless 70s/retro/disco revivals where "Stayin' Alive" and such is dragged out yet again, this is pretty much the only song by them I can bear to listen to them without complaint. As with the other tunes listed above, bad lyrics from what I can make out of them (hey, it's the Bee Gees), but the music is actually fairly sophisticated for such a major commercial pop tune.

Shaggy - "It Wasn't Me"

The Bloodhound Gang - "Your Only Friends are Make-Believe"

Prince - "When Doves Cry"
U2 - "New Year's Day"
I like "Summer of '69" and "Heaven"

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?

Another vote for Summer of 69, too.

4'39'' by John Cage. Though I have never listened to it (kind of difficult to hear it) and I probably got the title wrong. But that's probably the best he has ever done. Silence is sexy sometimes.

'into the groove' by madonna and 'the mercy seat' by nick cave

angelo (angelo), Sunday, 3 November 2002 23:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Your choice would almost fall into covers I love of songs by artists I hate, Angelo.
Into the Groove covered by Sonic Youth
Mercy Seat covered by Johnny Cash (though I don't hate Nick Cave and only hated Johnny Cash up till this album)

Ooh, I really like "The Bad Touch" and hate Bloodhound Gang. ALSO "My Console" by Eiffel 85 or whatever they are called is fantastic. ALSO "Separate Ways" is the greatest song of all time, but Journey are the worst band ever. And the video is pure glory.

New Kid in Town by the goddamned Eagles. Great chord progression, horrible band

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Saturday, 14 December 2002 17:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Otherside" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Excellent harmonies (or whatever you'd call them in this case) during the last few choruses.

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 14 December 2002 17:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

That first single from The Eminem Show has an unstoppable hook, and that bassline is just retarded, dawg. I feel like admitting this makes me a better person, somehow.

Also: Keep on Dancing or whatever by No Doubt, sounds like some German electro from two years ago. Quality. And the second single from Jimmy Eat World's new album, that's pretty neat too.

Unlike some of you I have been gifted with an inborn hatred for the voices of Bryan Adams and Phil Collns, helping me to at least preserve that portion of my hipness no matter what.

Tom Millar (Millar), Saturday, 14 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

any good song (and they've all made a bunch) by the Police, U2, Sonic Youth, Pavement, David Bowie, LeTigre, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Blur, Beck and Moby.

There's probably other artists I'm forgetting.

"Dust in the Wind" - Kansas

I feel awful saying this but seriously, that Interpol song is so tiny and mournful, lost in the wind.

forgot this thread! at some point i should also have mentioned Malibu by Hole. i guess Corgan is partially the reason why that stands apart, but then i'm pretty indifferent to most of the Pumpkins stuff too, so there it still is.

I'll take Foreigner - "I Want to Know What Love Is," and admit a little fondness for "Feels Like the First Time"

Pet Shop Boys - "What Have I Done to Deserve This" (of course, they brought in a ringer I am incapable of hating)

Kraftwerk - Trans Euro Express (this is good but computer music has no soul)

ABBA - Dancing Queen (mindless pop for idiots but this is a guilty pleasure)

Reelin' In The Years - Steely Dan (slick studio craftsmanship < raw emotion of real rock and roll)

i don't really really hate him the way i might've when i was younger but i have listened to "dont ask me why" by billy joel like 18 times since that 80s joel poll. in terms of hugest gulf between how i feel about one song by an act vs every other song by that act winner is definitely "boys of summer" by don henley.

WEEZER - EL SCORCHO

I don’t actually hate them but this is the only song by them that makes me want to sing my lungs out, I didn’t love any song by them beforehand but I think I started loving this one by proxy of Allo Darlin’s “kiss your lips” which hijacks the chorus from Scorcho in a really fun way.
