haha, no that's ok. I might just break down and order it - it's 8 pounds at Amazon.co.uk - I'm going to see what else I need from the old world and maybe do a shipment.

fourteen years pass...

Has anyone recently purchased an all-region player? Looking to invest in one. (Bonus points if you can recommend any particularly cool DVD sets that are only available in PAL format.)

Am very happy w/ this all region Sony Blu player, which plays everything (it's probably a lot cheaper on US Amazon too):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Blu-Ray-Players-Recorders/BDP-S3700-Region-Blu-ray-Player-Regions-Black/B01CGLS2V4/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1541772074&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=sony+all+region+blu+ray&psc=1

There are thousands of Region 2 only DVD issues (just as there thousands of Region 1 only sets) - have a browse of the Indicator, Arrow, Artifical Eye and Eureka/Masters of Cinema sites for key discs.

I'd recommend a poke around the forums at blu-ray.com, Simon, if you haven't been already. I'm sure there are some good discussions/recommendations there.

I've definitely considered this. Even though the boutique labels are cranking out blu-rays of all kinds of obscure stuff (and labels like Arrow are getting much better about putting out stuff that's all region or at least not locked for one particular region), there's still so much that's only available on DVD and/or has never been imported to North America. Plus I have a handful of non-region 1 DVDs that I've bought by accident and can only watch on my laptop and it's real annoying.

it was actually the Rohmer thread that got me thinking bout this - there's a PAL Six Moral Tales set for like 30 bucks CAD versus the OOP Criterion set which is currently running for ten times that :/

I also have a Sony BDP-S3700, I bought the modded version from Amazon (US) for $160. Quite like it actually... decent interface and remote, plays everything I have so far. I use it mainly for R2 releases from the UK that are unavailable in the US (like Requiem for a Village, or Robin Redbreast... UK folk horror stuff). And sometimes the UK version of stuff is a hell of a lot cheaper, even taking shipping costs into account, when you buy from Amazon UK. Especially when the pound is weak.

NP, SH - I think there's a virtually complete Rohmer set out there too that was issued in France, but I'm not sure if it has English language subs (perhaps your French is better than mine!)

I don't know if this Arrow Rohmer bu-ray set is region-locked, but is probably the one to go for (their very similar Rivette collection is exemplary):
