That's pretty awesome, Nick. I just checked the full list of champions and discovered that the dude I know won $54,000, but that's only good for 133rd of all-time!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:20 (nineteen years ago) link

So you're saying your dad would just intimidate him into not answer, er, questioning? I'd like to see that: the other two contestants standing 5 feet back from their signaling buttons, whispering the correct responses to your dad when he shoots them a cold glare.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Naw, I think he'd just get frustrated when The Dude Who Just Won't Lose answered rapidly, and then when he finally buzzed in before the dude he'd yellspike the answer like a volleyball in Alex Trebek's smug-ass face.

I'll take Charleston Chews for 15 Millions!

I miss watching Jeopardy, I should fine out when it's on and if it's on one of the 2.5 channels I get.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Oops, is it still on at 3:30 pm in Chicago? I watched that show ALL THE TIME after school, but some of us have to work now!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:15 (nineteen years ago) link

the Jeopardy start time in Chicago absolutely sucks.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think it's on during work hours. I watched it once or twice when I was unemployed.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, 3:30. It's about the only thing I watch on TV til the Simpsons are on at 5.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:19 (nineteen years ago) link

no Oprah?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I think they still air a show on Saturday, early evening I think, 6ish.

xpost you think I'm up that early?!?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:20 (nineteen years ago) link

they rerun Oprah like 5 times in Chicago, no? Before the Kimmel era (ugh), I think it was channel 7's late night competition.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:22 (nineteen years ago) link

haha they rerun Oprah after Nightline and BEFORE Kimmel!

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:25 (nineteen years ago) link

gotcha - you know 'cause you watch.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:25 (nineteen years ago) link

BUSTED (actually i had to run into the other room and check the listings. I knew they reran it at night, but thought "they can't possibly put it on before Kimmel, can they?")

What is this guy doing for anecdotes?

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Reading from the phone book.

Seriously though, good question. I don't know as I don't think I've paid attention while they interviewed him. I'll get back to you on it.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Kid I knew back in high school was on Teen Jeopardy and then blew it when he couldn't ID "Blame it on the Rain" on the Audio Daily Double. That song haunted him for the rest of senior year. He's probably dead now.

joshie (hammy), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

a kid I knew in high school (went to a rival quiz bowl school) blew an answer on Teen Jeopardy whose question was "What is the Kentucky Derby?" I mocked him relentlessly after that, tho he did win big.

Alex started the interview today with "we have not talked about your wife", implying that they have basically talked about everything else.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:38 (nineteen years ago) link

well if he's LDS they're not much to talk about, wife-wise (ie. seen but not heard). And if he's Fundamentalist LDS, they gotta talk about his wives.

yeah Milo I think you're right, but I'm really hoping he's fundie so those earnings will go towards his 17 14 year-old wives.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Some of the wacko fundies are invading West Texas. They bought a former resort/compound near the Rio Grande.

It's high entertainment, as the main opposition to them are other Xtian fundies, doing "SATAN IS HERE" protests.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 26 June 2004 00:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, the guy playing really seemed to GRASP that you had to go for everything to beat him (even though he then made a stupid bet in Final Jeopardy.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 26 June 2004 01:30 (nineteen years ago) link

It didn't matter come final Jeopardy, because the supergenius was already ahead. Then, if he gets the question correct, there's nothing anyone can do (since he will obviously bet enough to win).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Jeopardy is out and Wimbledon is in in my town, probably all week. Ken Jennings updates, please! (Later in the day is OK to avoid spoilers.)

I think I read some guy say that episodes are taped way, way in advance and that he had just gone to a recent one and the winning guy won again so supposedly he's going to win like dozens more episodes yet.

Dan I., Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:44 (nineteen years ago) link

but they try to act like it's taped that day, ie references to current holidays. and I assume they tape a few episodes each day, so when they say "he'll have the weekend to rest and be back on Monday" does he really? or is taping monday's episode directly after Friday's?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I went to a filming and they filmed two episodes.. they made the contestants change clothes between them

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:58 (nineteen years ago) link

So how about James's Final Jeopardy zinger last night? All in good fun, of course, but I feel like Ken was kinda stumped on how to respond.

not really enjoying how hard they're trying to turn every player into a personality in this tournament. i think part of jeopardy's charm is how the gameplay is so rigid and formulaic that only tiny bits of personality are allowed to slip through, and only in certain moments. there's a built-in mystery as to who these people are. you're always left wanting more.

i liked every one of these six players more when i knew them less.

also i find james' zingers not all that zingy. a little cringe even.

Apparently the clues were all written before the strike, and there were only a few episodes left to film. I can see why it's maybe not a good look to go forward with production, but does that count as crossing the picket line? (I genuinely don't know.)

ugh this clue on celeb jeop tonite:

"when she performed 'crazy for you' in the high school wrestling film 'vision quest,' this pop star was virtually unknown"

i assume these episodes were written pre-strike, but maybe the jeopardy fact checking dept already had a foot out the door? (she had the #1 album in the u.s. the week the movie was released, had recently scored her first #1 single, and was well on her way to superstardom.)

fact checking cuz, Saturday, 16 December 2023 15:53 (four months ago) link

I found out about this via a Jim Jarmusch post on Instagram (which he appears to have deleted). Claimed she was the best Jeopardy host of all time.

Real head scratcher, that.

circa1916, Saturday, 16 December 2023 15:59 (four months ago) link

Jeopardy!'s official Facebook account posted a response (which they even formatted like one of their answer screens) that explained Bialik is only out as a syndicated host, reasoning that they wanted more consistency or continuity next season, and said they hope she will be back as a prime-time special host. (Also I guess they consider the exclamation point in their show's name to be mandatory, leading to some awkward looking punctuation in their response.)

Possible Jarmusch deleted that post simply because he found out she wasn't actually out of the show altogether.
