Secret Recording Project?

A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that's "not really 100 percent a Metallica record." While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.

Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months. In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we're not exactly sure when you'll hear it, we're beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week.

A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou's work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers. We can't wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates . . . we'll be back with more details as they come together.

The result is at once unpredictable and viciously tight. "Pumping Blood" opens with a drone that breaks into a crunching march, goes into speed-metal gear and breaks into free-fall sections – all over seven minutes, cut live in one take. Another track, "Mistress Dread," features Reed singing across a relentless staccato riff played at manic velocity. "It doesn't feel like we're his backup band," Hammett claims. "It feels like we're a different band, in a situation we've never been in before." And, Trujillo notes, "it's making us a better band."


"A marriage made in heaven," Reed says in his first interview about the project, in the studio lounge during a break. "I knew it from the first day we played together: 'Oh, man, this is perfection, right in front of me.' "

He would date occasionally, but merely as amusement. He would remain faithful.

Yeah Lulu certainly wasn't such a bolt from out of the blue if you had even been sort of following Lou in last 15 yrs...that was one of the best things about Lulu, is it forced people in the mainstream who either didn't know shit about Lou or only knew "Perfect Day" / "Walk on the Wild Side" to contend with him now and all of his wonderful weirdness.

They're linked together though; it's castable as "insane" and "provocative" now because of the times we live in and the presumption that Lou Reed doesn't live in a vaguely racist bubble (which, as someone who hasn't ever followed him closely, I have no idea if he does or not; I've only made judgments based on the work I've encountered, some of which is hilarious but some of which has this undercurrent of "I should probably not scratch the surface of this too deeply if I don't want to ruin my day")

That being said, my own ignorance is acting against me here so I'll shut up; I more wanted to point out that some of the things that were called out about this album put it pretty firmly in the "do not engage" category for what are I hope obvious and understandable reasons.

That's probably hyperbole, but all the same I continue to revisit and enjoy this album (even if it is really a bit too long). Love the production, Lou's delivery and Metallica's playing. Cool lyrics too, almost got into a fight with a friend recently because he kept mocking the "table" line lol.

haven't listened to the album since it came out, but this thread seriously belongs in a museum -- so much gold in here.

If I had been the newspaper boy delivering bad news to Don McLean's doorstep about Buddy Holly, and he asked me, "Will anything good ever come out of this tragic event?" - I would've said yes and handed him a vinyl copy of LULU.

I've been listening to this record a lot recently. Usually only about half of it at any given go, but I skip different tracks each time, and I never skip the last two tracks. 'Dragon' is just as great as 'Junior Dad'.

Yeah I actually think about this a lot, like compared to most iconic people, I love that guy who had a super sprawling illogical career went out with maybe his (2nd most) divisive album (though Metal Machine Music is kind of canonized in a way)...it's absolutely relentless and insane, really fucked in parts, really great in parts

so much better than some kind of "return to form" respectable record like the last Bowie record or some kind of horrible "guest stars" Santana bit...

Lou Reed's final record is one of the most visceral and alive records I've ever heard.

I think it's the liner notes to New York where Lou suggests you take in the album in one focused sitting and then it's kind of like a movie. Really applies to LULU too for me, remember when I got it on vinyl I had a couple of good nights with friends where we'd listen to it all the way through while drinking a case of beer - Junior Dad is such a fantastic emotional payoff when you've been through all the frustration and desire up till then.

I think the way this album depicts sex, perversion, numbness, frustration is real interesting - and Junior Dad is just so touching, I think it made me realize some stuff abt my relation to my dad.

[q]GQ: There's been some talk about how the song "Junior Dad" brought Kirk and James to tears. What do you remember about that moment?

Lou Reed: Not just them...

Lars Ulrich: All of us. My dad was down there during the moment that you're talking about, and it was shared by everybody.[q]

hetfield's voice is (deliberately, i guess) real rough throughout but i love that high note he hits at the end of "cheat on me"

if there's an LP signed by all of them, it would have to be one of the most valuable records around.
