one year passes...

did we ever have any discussion on Brainticket?

Apparently never been one on ILM, suprisingly. First volume of Joel Vandroogenbroeck's "Meditations" is awesome btw.

That is an awesome album even if they ran out of colored pens before the cover was finished.

krautrock + sun ra = celestial ocean

the late great, Thursday, 18 October 2012 04:33 (eleven years ago) link

I've only heard the first one Cottonwood Hill which has a band that went off under its on steam straight after and became Toad. Subsequently haven't been aware of waht the later stuff is like but intrigued by the idea of krautrock plus Sun Ra equalling the sound of one of them, though that description could conceivably cover a pretty diverse area.

I know one of the better reissue labels reissued the lps a while back. I think it's Esoteric & they normally have pretty great sound. May need to check out at least that 1. Are they both as good as each other. There are only 3 aren't there Cottonwoodhill plus 2 where the only constant from that is the keyboardist?

ok, the sun ra thing take w/ a grain of salt, esp coming from me, you could as easily say "pharoah sanders + krautrock" or "earth wind & fire circa 1971 + krautrock"

but there is a good of tribal drumming and funky vamping and some hieratic chant and spoken word on there which gives it a vibe that's a little different from your average krautrock record, on the other hand parts of it don't sound so different from, say, a deuter record

the late great, Thursday, 18 October 2012 06:59 (eleven years ago) link

also i think there's a fair amount of call + response and the combo of cosmic synths old school instruments (like zithers and flutes) has a sun ra vibe to it too

What are Toad like? I didn't realise there was a connection, heard the name before but thought they were straight-up hard rock

pretty great stoner stuff early 70s hard rock with psychy touches. Very heavy, pretty good, don't know if their material is currently available. think I missed getting pretty decent physical cd transfers a couple of years back.
As in some decent reissue label did all 3 lps but that went out of print. Think that was a different version than the Akarma one.

Swiss heavy rock stuff, as i understand it the musicians on Cottonwoodhill save for wassisface the guy who kept the band name and probably set up the framework/direction for that 1st lp.

Stevolende, Thursday, 18 October 2012 18:00 (eleven years ago) link

Cottonwoodhill easily my favourite. Didn't know the Toad connection, curious to check it out but I'm less into the hard-rock side of this stuff, more into conceptual weirdo psych...

emil.y, Thursday, 18 October 2012 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

Just been reminded there's a pretty comprehensive 4cd box set out including live & unreleased stuff + an lp from 1980 from the keyboard guy.

So Cleopatra (ugh) just did an 18 CD box set of Joel Vandroogenbroeck's ColourSound library music. Well, one disc is a "bonus" 1988 remix EP by Carlos Peron from Yello, which is surprisingly enjoyable but maybe terrible. $70ish on Amazon.

They could've probably squashed these on to 10 discs and there are no bonus tracks, but I've been wanting to own these in some form for 20 years now so...

two weeks pass...

i've been waiting on this ... does not seem to be flying off the shelves, thank goodness

i've been listening to them on apple music

has anybody picked up a box? is the packaging nice?

the late great, Sunday, 19 July 2015 19:11 (eight years ago) link

The Vandroogenbroeck box is basically just a thin cardstock boss with all of the albums in cardboard sleeves and a booklet. Very budget. Brainticket box is pretty similar but in a clamshell box with booklet and poster.

Dang looks like I never picked up on this stuff and am just discovering it through Spotify.
Must get those cds . I think they may have reappeared on Esoteric after i8t got connected to Cherry Red.
Does sound more psychy than I was thinking. So been missing out.

yeah i love "cottonwoodhill"

unknown or illegal user (doo rag), Thursday, 24 March 2022 02:54 (two years ago) link

seems like they were good for at least another couple of lps. Or taht is to say the band went onto put out 3 lps as Toad who did some great heavy rock/stoner stuff which I already thought was worth checking out.
I hadn't payed attention to what the main guy went onto do under then bandname and now find out it is much trippier than I had assumed.
Think I've even had those discs in my hands and not bought them over the last 20 odd years.
May rectify that some point in the future if I get the dosh.

Stevolende, Thursday, 24 March 2022 12:50 (two years ago) link

the record i think of as cottonwoodhill is in fact a double repackage of the 1st 2 albums, i had it for a bunch of years before i knew that

both great

still never heard the 3rd one
