omg it seems that simmons only created this site so he could post his columns on a layout that has a permanent footnote column

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

Why is the top third of the page so horrible? Do they not have any designers at all over there?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

Eight and a half years have passed. I can't remember how Jimmy answered, just what his face looked like. You wouldn't call it nervous, you wouldn't call it overwhelmed, you wouldn't call it anything … he didn't fucking know.

going for that "hard pg-13" i guess

unique housing opportunity (swanbed.gif) (govern yourself accordingly), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:45 (twelve years ago) link

Thank god they have someone covering the AL east!

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

it looks like yard work! which was when, 2005?

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:00 (twelve years ago) link

omg yard work! I miss that.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:08 (twelve years ago) link

I love the defensive descriptions of the coming soon sites on the last. SEE, WE COULD'VE CALLED IT "FOXBORO" BUT WE DIDN'T!!

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

on the left, rather.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

Wow, this site has no content. What happened to the Katie Bakes story?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

the links to the second page of the articles are fucked up--they open the piece in a single page but kick you back to the beginning.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:52 (twelve years ago) link

haha this totally looks like someone using a wordpress theme in like late 2006 to try to emulate mcsweeneys or arts and letters daily

"presented by klondike"

a slight case of joe johnsonitis (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

also footnotes basically suck, it's like extra tldr

you're a professional, professionally put that shit into the body as a point you're trying to make or leave it out, you're not citing academic journals or something

a slight case of joe johnsonitis (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

footnote: they are hilarious when used properly

a slight case of joe johnsonitis (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

the klosterman story was a fun read!

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

re footnotes it maybe has something to do w/the strange phenomenon of dfw becoming an avatar for hack writers harboring pretensions everywhere

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:04 (twelve years ago) link

Grantland is ugly, but it's a shit ton easier to read/look at than Gawker Media's current format.

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:17 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah the design is amateurish but I'm not gonna say that bothers me in the least. As long as the articles are easy to read, right? But I agree with the "hard PG-13" comment above, it's like he knew he could use one "fuck" in his column and was just debating where to put it

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

it looks like yard work! which was when, 2005?

tbh if grantland had rotating banners (including, naturally, BIG BEAR) all would be a-ok here

unique housing opportunity (swanbed.gif) (govern yourself accordingly), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:42 (twelve years ago) link

Willing to bet that Klosterman, not Simmons, is the one that pushed for Carles.

Cunga, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

going out on a limb with that

Cunga, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 June 2011 03:06 (twelve years ago) link

i'm way too lazy to dig up all the instances when simmons trashed the bruins, tho i'm sure someone else is on it

J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 June 2011 03:07 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, he crushed them when they were losing.

polyphonic, Thursday, 9 June 2011 05:14 (twelve years ago) link

well guys tbf his objection to the bruins was always about the fact that ownership didn't spend to the level it could have in the 80s and 90s, and this issue has been made completely irrelevant by the nhl hard cap. so yeah now he's back on the horse but so are a lot of people, it's hockey for chrissakes, it's barely a major sport and lends itself to the bandwagon because the playoff version is so vastly different from/better than the reg season version--essentially he's me with a lot more money.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 June 2011 05:24 (twelve years ago) link

oh also i don't fuck w/merch from any team

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 June 2011 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

Clay, Friday, 10 June 2011 19:55 (twelve years ago) link

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 June 2011 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

That Carles article reminds me of Steve Martin when he wants to be a Serious Writer bro.

Cunga, Friday, 10 June 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

Cunga, Friday, 10 June 2011 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

I liked the Carles article. It's fun to see him try to class it up slightly.
