What I've Lost is AMAZING, but I've not been able to get into Boy Trouble very much. These dudes seem to get better the further away they get from 'songwriting'.

i really love "walk and talk" (LOVE the vocal treatment) but i can't get into anything else i've heard by these dudes (the boy trouble ep, midnight people). think they're kinda boring tbh.

been listening to ridic amounts of this since spring, young small discography but cultivated so perfectly wish everyone released so little music of such consistently high quality, like u dont have to ever listen to the other songs bc they dont exist

oh god so not boring, imo theres something abt the way their stuff moves, its got a lithe, floating quality, it doesn't sound grounded at all. its a mystery (to me) how they pull it off its so subtly suggested by light pops clicks, little internal rhythms

Matt, I purposely left "boy trouble" off my opening list bc while it's okay I think it falls out their sweet spot between vocals and longform house. But I think they grow less interesting when they run away from vocals as well - like "where the freaks have no name" is fine but nowhere near as good as "full grown man" et al.

It's a bit too dad house for me, nice enough and all that but I dunno it makes me feel really young for not enjoying it very much but to be fair I kinda like that about it. They do have a nice atmosphere about them and I think flopson nailed it, they kind of float but they leave me aching for a little more kick and groove, they're kinda rigid somehow dispite how well they keep that dreamy floaty atmosphere going. It sounds like a track you'd hear in some place called bar oblong where 40 something ex-dance heads meet on a sunny afternoon where the music is played at low volumes, just loud enough so you can strike the odd pose that reminds you of when you enjoyed to dance but just quiet enough so you can order a cocktail without any trouble. Sounds like a nice day out really. Can't wait until I'm old.

No idea its just one of those places every city has that are like an up market weatherspoons that play funky trad house with those oblong beats. You can usualy see a branch in the back of the shot of hedkandi album front covers.

Yeah I like a load of deep/funky house, can't stop playing every Underground Quality release I can lay my hands on at the moment. I think this was the last vocal track I really dug.

I like that they keep it kind of raw and loose while keeping that funky/deep hosue sheen, its a vibe I feel is missing from these guys.

True. They give me a simular vibe though. Benoit & Sergio give me more of a DFA-esq vocal version of someone like Pantha Du Prince rather than Tensnake on everything I've heard bar 'Everybody'. I <3 Pantha Du Prince.

They've got a nice little chart on Juno with a nice slice of that kinda thing too: Steffi, Kassem Mosse, Moodyman, Theo Parrish. I feel they're kinda on the edge of what I dig from this end of house but before I can get into it fully they double back on themselves and it gets a little stagnent. Worth keeping an ear on maybe we'll see how they go I guess.



I just can't get past the pitched down PRINCIPLES every 5 seconds. Murders a great song for me.

don't really get the buzz with "everybody", like...it's just not very good. i mean, i like a lot of the music that is associated with these guys, except not them. i mean, it's called "everybody" and the hook is someone singing "everybody" but the music doesn't really reach the standard you'd expect given those promising signs. it just sort of falls between too many poles for me, not quite french house, not quite trance.

I saw one remix of Walk & Talk in YouTube but that's it iirc: any official remixes?

Back in 2012, when I was describing their ace track "Lipstick and Lace" to friends, I assumed their name was pronounced "Ben-wah and Saire-heo", like some sort of French/Spanish crossover. Is that in any way correct? Or is merely as the English phonetics would indicate?

Many of the rest of us have been awaiting that album for a decade, so when expectation is building on the back of “Walk and Talk,” “Boy Trouble,” “Adjustments,” etc …

“Lost Decade,” the title track, is my sole keeper from this record, and it isn’t close to my favorites of theirs overall

Just surprising then that there wasn't a discussion. Though I remember seeing a disappointed comment somewhere that isn't here. Still!

I hadn’t been aware of “Principles” somehow. It’s pretty good!

“Principles” is great, though I do think they peaked early where with “Full Grown Man” and “What I’ve Lost”.
