On a hunch that its anniversary might be approaching, I looked up the release date of "Intergalactic."
It was May 12th, 1998, so it's now 20 years and one day old.
Does anyone else consider Hello Nasty "new" Beastie Boys? Kinda hard to do that now, I guess.

Been a minute since I thought about this one. Didn’t grab me back in the day, must have been burnout. These days if I want to relive that time I’d probably put on Ill Comm instead.

My relationship with this album is complicated. Some of the beats on Hello Nasty are the best they ever rapped over, but it was also when their rapping cadence got really rigid for some reason.

i heard "Intergalactic" at the thrift store yesterday it was super awesome

it's the fifth of their eight albums, and 16 years into a 29-year career, so about as mid-point as you can get. however, it might be their most recent good album.

two years ago, on QGP's birthday, we had performed Intergalactic at karaoke during evening festivities. around midnight, heading to the last bar of the night, our party passed some youths in a car park, playing the same song on a boom box. we immediately encircled the startled teens through dance, and serenaded them until the close of the song."holy shit, that was awesome," said one girl as we resumed our linear progression & departed.

Yeah I hear you. I was 12 when I bought this and the Beasties were all in their early 30s. Now I'm in my early 30s and these guys are either retired or dead. Man, time moves fast.
This is still my favorite Beasties album. I love how scattershot and open ended it is. Even the fillerish stuff is pretty interesting, on re-listen. I forgot how many wacky sound effects and production tricks were scattered on this thing. Plus I always thought it was neat how they hid stuff in the negative space between tracks. I never looked at the times on the Walkman so it just came off like pieces of the album were disappearing when you skipped through it. Blew my tiny mind when I finally figured out what was going on.

I've barely listened to most of it for years, but this was the most anticipated album of my life before its release. A feeling that will never be replicated.

Same here. And for a while it was my favourite. Not so much now - it kind of sags a bit in places. I like the 'Mellon Collie'-style ballad section towards the end a lot though.
I never got my head round Check Your Head when I was younger for some reason but my housemate left it on the turntable the other day and I was blown away. It sounds like something that just couldn't have an equivalent today

CYH their pinnacle IMHO
― calstars, Monday, 14 May 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link
I think it's because when I was first getting into them, I heard The In Sound To Way Out before CYH, so I found it a bit of a strangely disjointed listen
