I genuinely skip Yamaha if it ever comes on during shuffle or whatever, I actively dislike it. Anyone feel me on this??? (Didn't think so)

I'm not that much of a contrarian but I always want to press skip after about a minute of yamaha

that's because LVM had 2 expert producers on every track and Love King mostly has Nash doing his best impression of them

and compensating with improved songwriting imo

Voted for FILA but it was close between that an Turnt Out (especially for the "my bad i meant to say baby baby" bit). I know it has its detractors but i also love Florida University. So fun to sing along to + it was the song i used to get a couple of Dream sceptical friends into him.

how can one have improved songwriting that doesn't result in improved songs

LVM = good production, bleh songs
LK = great songs

really i think there's an argument for "sex intelligent (remix)" and "nikki part 2" really encapsulating why i love this album - they're certainly not good songcraft in the traditional sense and they don't even make all that much sense if you isolate them, so i guess you could say they're evidence of LK's weakness, but the gaseous production and the way the lyrics take in all of terius' most dreamish characteristics make them totally essential to the album

OTM, that's why i voted for the "sex intelligent" remix. love the way it strips terius' sound to its most otherworldly essentials, just glossy pillow talk and cosmic drift. doesn't matter at all to me that it's not the album's strongest piece of songwriting, the atmosphere is incredible.

but really the answer is "FILA" - "turnt out" and "yamaha" are also up to par with his best work but fuck the rest more or less

Agreed, although I'd argue it is a good example of songwriting -- a second stab at the song that improves on the original.

man there are some bad songs on this - "make up bag"? "nikki pt 2", "abyss", "panties to the side"? "february love"? who ever even wants to listen to these songs?

let's not even go near "take care of me"

xp lex the sex intelligents are ok, i really don't like the vocals on the first but both are kinda lazily written. i do prefer the remix tho

no! i love that song to death, mentioned it a couple times in the main love king thread and don't know why i didn't highlight here. it's certainly better than "yamaha", my afterthought candidate. funny, it's almost the opposite of the "sex intelligent" remix, in that it gets by on traditional songwriting and storytelling, bears hardly a trace of the dark, dreamy atmosphere that characterizes other album highlights. get the feeling that most here see it as a throwaway track.

the first like 30 seconds of "nikki pt 2" are great actually, especially on the heels of "yamaha" (jaymc otm) - what was he thinking with that hook though - and then to repeat it after the second verse? ugh

yeah i've always wondered what "nikki" would sound like without a tune and if dream sang it like he just rolled out of bed

"abyss" is gorgeous and has a tune

yeah wow the end of "yamaha" --> up to just before the hook on "nikki pt 2" is incredible

i mean i'm not just realizing this now but it's been a few months

I'm surprised that folks seem to universally hate the title track. I think it's pretty fun! Might have to vote for Make Up Bag though...

i think the title track is great, easily one of the best songs here

i adore "florida university"! "abyss" "turnt out" "fu" and "veteran" are my faves...think it's between "abyss" and "veteran."

and yeah i love the title track...such a pretty melody.

my sister was a "veteran" for halloween because of this album. i don't think anyone understood.

i think she wore fatigues and camo makeup. it doesn't bear thinking on too deeply, tbh. also in pretty poor taste, but that's halloween, i guess.

how the hell would someone "get" that a person dressed as a veteran is a reference to a bonus track from a middlingly-selling r&b album

hating on "nikki pt 2" in any way is just wrong

not as wrong as thinking this album is better than LVM, but close

the verses are great, the "keep showin up keep showin up" etc part sounds terryble tho - compounded by the decision to repeat it after the second verse

i wonder if nikki is a mavs fan -- might flip my opinion on the song tbh

anyway, as a stone cold terius stan, i don't see how you can hate on "nikki pt 2" if only for nerdy callback reasons

i voted for nikki pt 2. may not be the best 'song' on there but it's the prettiest moment

a year on i still listen to 'love king' and 'love/hate' all the time but 'love vs. money' less so

imo it's kinda sad that the little Princealike thought he could get a way with using the name Nikki for one of his own characters
