One of those records I enjoy much more when I'm listening to than when I'm think about it; it just doesn't linger in the head like the first two. It's great for what it is, but I do hope he challenges himself or shakes things up a bit on the next one (which, as I recall, drops in four days, right?)

Evan R, Friday, 3 June 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

oh, The Love Intravenous isn't dropping anytime soon

for someone who likes this guy a lot it's pretty shameful i haven't heard 13-17

i only really feel like returning to FILA or Turnt Out tho tbh. i still think this album is a step down from the other two.

goole, Friday, 3 June 2011 20:36 (twelve years ago) link

lol actually reading the thread helps too since everyone is saying that now

goole, Friday, 3 June 2011 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

this is definitely a rare album where the bonus tracks are not only worth hearing but make the album as a whole better

i still don't think it's a major step down

i don't think it's necessarily like a big lapse of quality or craft, but the number of genuinely memorable/addictive songs is imo a big falloff from the first two albums

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

that's the sense in which i don't think it's a fall-off - like i can hear how the songwriting perhaps isn't as on point as on the first two (it's really more about the production imo) but despite that there are only a few songs that aren't memorable/addictive to me

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Friday, 3 June 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

theres about as many that i skip as on #2

lebroner (D-40), Friday, 3 June 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

agreed that the lack of focus on songwriting was there, but that started w/ stuff like 'rocking that shit' on #2 (which btw i love)

It was a minor step down from the first two imo.

went with SI remix, though it could just as easily have been FILA, abyss, turnt out or veteran. shit, or yamaha even. great album. i joined late, so i don't have to notice any drop-off.

have found, sadly, that love king is not what u wanna spring on people who claim to hate modern R&B, in the hope of changing minds. it tends only to harden the heart.

Terius, on what the new material he's producing for Bieber will sound like: "“Somewhere between like Fergie and Jesus, somewhere in between there. If I can get away with edgy, I would love it.”

if "yamaha" wasn't in the running for best-song-ever and kind of a boring choice but still the right one here, i would vote either "sex intelligent" or "florida university"

it's entirely sung in falsetto, how could that possibly be irrelevant?!

Tim F, Saturday, 4 June 2011 06:59 (twelve years ago) link

xp well i like that in the context of the album that "turn out" feels really frivolous -- i don't think that if terius sung it in his 'normal' voice that it would feel any less so -- i understand how his falsetto might put someone off but as someone who likes the song, it's also irrelevant in the sense that my enjoyment would not be affected by a change in his voice

b.o.s.e. (banned ones still envy) (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:01 (twelve years ago) link

How is everyone ignoring the majesty that is Veteran? It's like the best R. Kelly song Terius has ever written. Double good once Kells jumps on the remix.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:04 (twelve years ago) link

really i think there's an argument for "sex intelligent (remix)" and "nikki part 2" really encapsulating why i love this album - they're certainly not good songcraft in the traditional sense and they don't even make all that much sense if you isolate them, so i guess you could say they're evidence of LK's weakness, but the gaseous production and the way the lyrics take in all of terius' most dreamish characteristics make them totally essential to the album

Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:22 (twelve years ago) link

"abyss" is really self-conscious about how it goes for the ~epic~ feel but succeeds despite that - i think that's the reason it's not the absolute top tier of this album though

am i the only person who absolutely adores "florida university"?

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:23 (twelve years ago) link

the block i usually skip is panties to the side/turnt out/february love (latter two not actively bad but i don't really NEED to listen to them ever)

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:24 (twelve years ago) link

I don't like Yamaha at all, I don't want to hear him doing songs like that really, it's not why I listen to The Dream. I genuinely skip Yamaha if it ever comes on during shuffle or whatever, I actively dislike it. Anyone feel me on this??? (Didn't think so)

I think Make Up Bag might be my favourite track on this...I love the Sex Intelligents and All Black Everything too. I fucking love this album though generally, two or three duds but easily my most listened to record.

I voted for "Sex Intelligent (Remix)" to avoid a possible "Yamaha" sweep.

Also: LVM represents more a triumph of production than this one.

i love "f.i.l.a." but would never have picked it as the most likely to upset "yamaha"!

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 18 June 2011 07:59 (twelve years ago) link

find it fairly amusing f.i.l.a. wins when make up bag was deeemed somehow offensive or "odious" by a few people. pretty sure "quiet woman i bought you a make up bag", as offensive as that may be pales in significance to pretty much the entire f.i.l.a. lyric. dumb and all as opening that can of worms is anyway.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Saturday, 18 June 2011 09:19 (twelve years ago) link

i find it funny that any of terius' songs are being judged on offensiveness at all, the man has always been a cad

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 18 June 2011 09:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah exactly. i hardly think "oh look at his horrible habit of buying 5k make up bags to stop his gf suspecting he has cheated" is the sudden appearance of a monster we never knew.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Saturday, 18 June 2011 09:33 (twelve years ago) link

his caddish tendencies are always balanced out by his inadequacies in any case. "make up bag" is a massive faux pas, and indicative of a man with no clue about how relationships work, which is why it's funny i guess? but it's not that great a song, relative to the rest imo.

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 18 June 2011 09:37 (twelve years ago) link

I love the-dream in lovestruck mode, but find his "how to be a playa" tunes mostly off-putting. "offensive" may be the wrong word.

Tim F, Saturday, 18 June 2011 10:52 (twelve years ago) link

i was WAY more off-put by almost all of Usher's Confessions. it's almost as if he set the groundwork for Chris Brown years later -- "here's how to spin something hurtful you did to someone else and make it all about you!"

is terius ever really lovestruck? more often luststruck, surely, and that fits pretty naturally with the "how to be a playa" side of things

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 18 June 2011 11:05 (twelve years ago) link

i mean, how often does he actually get starry-eyed about a girl's personality as opposed to her titties like woo-oo-oo, her booty like woo-oo-oo.

that's a pretty loose characterization of what i said about the song and fwiw FILA was never a single so i never really heard it enough to pay attention to the whole lyric and catch the cheating angle of it.

some dude, Saturday, 18 June 2011 11:22 (twelve years ago) link

well in the lyrics to "make up bag" there isn't even necessarily a cheating angle. he denies cheating and it's arguably just as much about him being out partying and his wife thinking he has cheated, which obv like in the context of every other song is prob not unreasonable.

i mean yes telling the guys "oh just buy her something" is pretty lame but i've bought presents for gf when i fucked up before, it's not monstrous patriarchy or something. obv if it's a case of "oh there goes another 5k for a makeup bag" that's a bit different but i just think "odious" is a bit strong.

the utterly triumphant "SO SHE LET ME DO HERRR" in fila seems fairly obviously more offputting to me, if i thought about it, but i don't really seek people i morally agree with in music.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Saturday, 18 June 2011 11:29 (twelve years ago) link

luststruck then, and I think there's a big difference in feel between those tunes and the tunes where he's just focused on how great he is.

have this same conflict re Make Up Bag in particular - love the sound, hate the sentiment (don't give a fuck about its technical quality as a song), will always delight and frustrate in equal measure. same goes for the title track (dope piano chords and self harmonies, awful shit like "sorry ladies but there ain't nothing like a smart bitch"). but it's 'in character' etc. and maybe prince wrote something just as bad one time and i've just not noticed.
