I want to retract my earlier pooh-poohing, this game is fantastic.

JimD, Thursday, 2 June 2011 13:43 (twelve years ago) link

yeah tis

oof got a sick score on F4, still only half as good as Mordy damn you

i know multiball is a window of high scoring opportunity but i hate it, and i'm so unlucky all the balls fly at my flippers all at the same time, all the time.

got Captain America table last night, latest edition to the Marvel collection.

Is okay but frustrating moments of ball going straight down the middle of the table seemed to happen an awful lot.

Also noticed some annoying unskippable message moments, like after ball loss and it shows the updates. could have been just me and late night tiredness though.

and i really like the music on the Wolverine table

Ste, Monday, 11 July 2011 10:48 (twelve years ago) link

If I get this, what are the good tables? Ste, any other good ones besides the Spiderman and Wolverine tables?

Nhex, Monday, 11 July 2011 11:49 (twelve years ago) link

All the Marvel tables (Wolv, Spidey, Iron Man, Blade, Cap America) are decent, and the Fantastic 4 one (which i don't think comes as part of the Marvel collection, could be wrong).

It could be down to personal preference really, 3 tables I'm not overly fond of - SSF, Haunted Mansion, and Rocky and Bullwinkle. But I know lots of other people think they're great. Good thing with all the tables is you can trial them for free first.

Lots of people say that Excalibur is one of the best, but to me it's just okay.

Ste, Monday, 11 July 2011 12:57 (twelve years ago) link

oh and i haven't bought the four pre installed tables, but they look really good. I should get those at some point.

While ILX has been down, this has appeared on both iOS and 3DS, and both are great. iOS version is free with one (new) table, then wolverine/captain america/thor are in-app purchases. 3DS version has 4 completely new tables.

I picked this up a few weeks ago... need more friends to fight on the leaderboard besides ant! Really enjoy the Marvel tables so far, especially the Wolvie table.

I got it a few months ago - cute, though slight, it's a $3 title, so expect about that much worth out of it. Great style obviously, and works as a great NES-era throwback, as you can beat the whole thing in about an hour.

Nhex, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 13:08 (eleven years ago) link

how does this compare to The Pinball Arcade?

set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:03 (eleven years ago) link

Pinball Arcade seems like a much stronger physics simulation, as their goal is to get perfect emulation of real tables, frustrations and all. I definitely swing more towards Pinball FX and other "fake" pinball games, where you can (and should!) take advantage of the fact that it's a video game to do weird stuff, camera tricks, animations, etc.

Nhex, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

I vastly prefer Pinball Arcade. To me the Pinball FX games aren't video gamey enough! It should be more like, I dunno, Wonderputt vs. real miniature golf. Plus I love supporting the project of Pinball Arcade because I love old pinball tables.

This is going to fail in the next couple of days, 400k was hugely optimistic. And part of the problem for me is that the originals are on gog.com and still look and play great anyway, so there's no desperate need for remakes. Still, that new table would've been nice.

Nhex, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 13:17 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, the impersonators they've got in to read the dialogue lines are laughably awful, their yoda sounds more like Phyllis Pearce. Tables are great though, especially the Clone Wars one.

JimD, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 23:56 (eleven years ago) link

I like Pinball FX2 (or whatever the PS3 version is called) but some of the tables last way too long. The Spider-man table in particular has lots of easy extra balls and entire modes where ball save is permanently on.

abanana, Thursday, 28 February 2013 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

All the Star Wars tables are on sale this week on both Sony and MS stores, so I'll probably get them but... tempted to switch platforms to PS4 for the future. Out of curiosity, anyone here doing/done that? Seems like most of us here were on XBL. Gotta admit that leaderboards are a motivating factor.

Nhex, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 06:36 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I actually ended up with a full set of all tables for PC, thanks to various bundles and deals, but when I play I still lean towards 360 because PC leaderboards are a wasteland. Can't face the prospect of rebuying everything yet again for PS4 though.

JimD, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 09:39 (eight years ago) link

I'm not going to rebuy everything, just thinking about doing a platform/brand switch for new tables, since I don't plan to get an Xbox One. Will be feeling similar pain when the new Rock Band comes out, sigh.

Nhex, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 14:23 (eight years ago) link

At least with this game, it doesn't look like they've optimized for the new console generation anyway... so maybe I will stick to 360 out of inertia. OTOH, the cross-buy between PS3/PS4/Vita/future Sony ecosystem, maybe I should just go ahead and pull the trigger. Is there going to be a Zen Pinball/Pinball FX3?

Nhex, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 14:26 (eight years ago) link

Seems unlikely, if they were going to upgrade the engine then the move to next gen would've been the time to do that. And there's really nothing wrong with the engine as it is anyway.

Harmonix have saved me from the Rock Band dilemma by dropping support for keyboards, which means I'm sticking with RB3 anyway.

Ok this launched for PSVR yesterday and I really shouldn't be starting all over again in a new ecosystem (my original table purchases were on Xbox and then I got a ton of extra tables on PC too through bundles etc, I even bought the 3ds version) but I couldn't resist picking it up. And ohhhhhh shit it's AMAZING, by far my favourite version yet.

I guess if they take this as an opportunity to move to cross platform leaderboards then that'll be a good thing, even if they're clearly not going to go so far as "hey bring all your PC tables over to PS4" or anything.

Urgh. So FX3 came out, I've not tried it on console because all my tables were on 360 and this gen I've only got a PS4, but I've given the PC version a try and it's pretty awful.

- Apparently there are graphical improvements, but I couldn't see any.
- Frame rates are massively down, I could previously maintain a solid 60fps at 1440p on my surface book, in FX3 I've had to drop to 1080p and I'm still seeing regular stutters
- Tables now level up as you play: you unlock upgrades which mean eg the bumpers score more per hit, or the multiball scoring increases by 15%, or whatever. So trying to score well on table before you've fully levelled it up is pretty pointless, they've managed to introduce a pointless grind to fucking pinball. You can turn that stuff off, but the online leaderboards are based on it being turned on.

I've only just noticed FX3 in my Steam library. Installing now so will give it a try, sounds like I'll be disappointed though.

Hate to admit it but the RPGification stuff is actually pretty compelling so yeah, I've ended up playing the new version a lot more than I initially expected.

Irritating thing which might just be me getting something wrong - they make you connect your steam/MS/PSN account to one of their own zen accounts, but don't give you enough control to let you make sure that eg your steam/MS/PSN accounts are all linked to the SAME zen account (which is the main reason you'd want to be able to do this).

JimD, Friday, 2 February 2018 14:47 (six years ago) link

Yeah it seemed literally a button click and then um, what ok

Played Spiderman, Empire Strikes Back, Secrets of the Deep, and trials of Jaws, Aliens and Adventure Land

I like it yeah, graphics slightly improved but not outstanding. I still have issues with some of the ball physics too.

Personally not bothered about the upgrade stuff, seems they're trying to go for the mobile phone game appeal.

Don’t know whether anyone’s been paying attention but they’ve announced Pinball FX4 (though it’ll just be called Pinball FX). And they’ve managed to piss off the entire fan base. Previous purchases don’t carry over, every table will need to be paid for again. And they’re not launching on Stream (it’ll be an epic game store exclusive). And they’re not launching on PS4/XBOne either, it’ll be next gen only on console (except they’re sticking with Switch for some reason? Maybe just to further annoy the PS4/XBOne owners who can’t play it on their more powerful consoles?).

They got bought out last year so I’m guessing none of these cash grab decisions are actually coming from the dev team themselves but still, folks seem pretty angry. I’d actually got to the point where I had all 99 tables on steam over 8-10 years or whatever, so yeah, no way I’m rebuying all those at £3-4 each.

They’re ditching their own engine and rebuilding everything in unreal 4. That’s the main justification they’re giving for “so you need to pay again” but as a user who cares what the engine is? It’s all very weird and poor decision making on their part.

JimD, Friday, 26 March 2021 08:41 (three years ago) link

Oof. Terrible move, huge part of the appeal was that you could carry the library over from gen to gen, as long as you were in the same console or PC ecosystem. Then again, I haven't touched this game in years - hopefully they use the next-gen opportunity to actually change things up somehow. (But as you said, they're sticking with Switch, so... probably not.)

According to Zen, the game “will introduce Pinball Royale, a new multiplayer action mode incorporating frantic battle royale-style gameplay.
hm.
