Although Dave himself subsequently revealed that was because he was very much coming down off a cocaine binge from the night before and apologised to Nardwuar, although it took him years to do so...

I <3 Nardwuar. Our bands used to gig together in the mid-90s. He's a total sweetheart, and some of his interviews have left me in tears.

nadwuar is such a great interviewer. his technique is so successful - the results he gets through oddball sincerity and killer research are amazing.

If you haven't heard this week's Nardwuar/WFMU podcast, I can't recommend it enough. After half an hour of badgering Ian MacKaye - mostly about a Fugazi show from 1991 - Ian finally snaps and gently but devastatingly punctures Nardwuar's whole persona, playing the part of a kindly uncle who can't stand to see you act foolish in public anymore. It actually left me a little shaken....The most amazing thing is Nardwuar DOES NOT GET IT. It truly is like screaming at a wall.

Wouldn't acknowledging Ian's criticism require breaking persona?

Maybe the reason for Ian's annoyance is that he's had to endure the schtick for four or five interviews. By now he may have been hoping for a much deeper conversation. Nardwuar gets his best reactions when the musician is thrown off guard by his knowledge and generosity.

Wow, in 20 years of listening to Nardwuar I have never heard an interviewee give him as severe a dressing down as that.

Said it before but..."Nardwuar" is not a persona. He's a real person who behaves and talks like that all the time.

If that's the case why was Mackaye so disappointed that his friend (as he repeatedly called him) disappeared when the recorder went on?

eh, that wasn't that bad. nardwuar interviews obviously more fun when he's interviewing someone who has a sense of humor. or a stoned rapper. ian didn't "snap". he just wants everyone to be plain like the amish.

listening to them i feel like they both are characters you couldn't imagine being like that 24/7, but they probably are!
for some reason, i could easily imagine snoop being like that 24/7.

When I saw Fugazi all the house lights were put on for their set, Mackaye seemed self-consciously unsure about whether this was he right thing to do or not.... yawn

um, i'm only about 25 minutes in so far, but nards - who i generally think is awesome - has been ragging on this hockey rink story and implying ian was out of order for being perceived as being annoyed about playing an ice hockey rink for ages, and i'm not really surprised ian is getting wound up.

Don't think either of them come out of it particularly well

i get if people find ian's "i am mr reasonable with constructive criticism for you" bit condescending, but considering narduwar - in the middle of his usual nonsense barrage - got unwarrantedly harsh and guilt-trippy about a 20 year old concert - i don't get how anybody can think mackaye was being an asshole here.

unless someone just jumped ahead to the end and missed that bit

it is kinda like that superfan thing where someone sees their idol in public and says: hey you probably don't remember this *and then goes into looooong dull anecdote about meeting idol decades ago and some "weird" thing that happened that they have thought about ever since it happened and the idol has no fucking clue what they are talking about*. and usually that creates an awkward moment. at least ian remembered the show!

and know nardwuar has been thinking about the fugazi show he set up since the day after the show.

yeah but this is like their 3rd/4th interview. he went ham on a regular guest in a format that already has them off balance, he got some relatively considered criticism considering.

The Lydia Lunch/Exene Cervenka interview is classic.

i think if someone wrote a blog rant saying he wouldn't be able to put on shows again, despite turning a profit and getting a thank-you note, because the band had been mean to him about the acoustics, we'd be pissing on that person from a great height. and this is someone making that argument 20 years later.

I think you're overlooking something very basic here, which is the Narduar character is supposed to be kind of obsessive and annoying. It's comedy.

It's often more than comedy, his method can yield great interviews. Ian's not the guy to try it with though.

i'd say it's a pretty good method on ian -- can you think of any other method that would elicit an endorsement for bananas?

overlooking the comedy would be saying "why is this asshole talking about k-stew and junkyard?"
