russell crowe's fatness was incredibly distracting

His floppy bangs too!

I couldn't finish the Brit series.

Confused but blessed with extravagance

i really enjoy michael clayton. it's a lark, but it's a /smart/ lark, and kind of feels like something milos forman wd do, if he were working today

I wonder whatever happened to that lady. She did that and then the one where Joe Pesci was a bum at Harvard (I think she was in that at least)and then I can't remember ever seeing her again. Haven't seen DBS in years either but iirc he was abducted by aliens.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

I think she was on One Tree Hill

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

moira kelly was on the west wing for a minute and then she was on one tree hill.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

she had a very abrasive screen presence

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

haha she got kicked off the west wing and they never explained what happened to her character

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

what ever happened to db sweeney? he was dreamy.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

♥, (remy bean), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

x-post YES! She really did. She was sort of scary.

Never saw OTH

DB Sweeney was dreamy, it's true.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

d.b. sweeney was the voice of the dinosaur in the disney movie "dinosaurs"

That Cutting Edge clip feels like some alternate reality John Cusack-Winona Ryder pairing

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

My sister loved The Cutting Edge. And Newsies.

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

i loved both those movies when i was a kid. i think it is kind of a girl thing.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

Never actually saw The C Edge but I may still know most of the words to all the Newsies song. I LOVED that movie because, well, young Christian Bale.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

Yup. Sis also loved Swing Kids. Since none of these movies were box office hits, how the hell did she learn about them? Was there a Bale network on CompuServe?

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

i was going to mention swing kids. christian bale and robert sean leonard. definitely part of the preteen girl hot boy movie canon.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:23 (twelve years ago) link

x-post lol horseshoe :D

lol idk but I'm pretty sure I saw Swing Kids the weekend it opened. Christian Bale AND Robert Sean Leonard. IN SUITS. C'mon. I found a notebook from around then while I was cleaning out my parents' house and it had "Swing Kids" doodled in script on the inside. *hangs head in shame* I mean, I guess it could have been worse. I could have written "Swing Heil! Swing Heil!".

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

it was such a phenomenon! my friends and i had the soundtrack! what was that even about?

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

i definitely thought it had gravitas because kenneth branagh played a nazi

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

^^ great hair btw

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

sorry this is not about tony gilroy

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

Bale, not Branagh. Maybe Branagh too.

Branagh wasn't even in the credits!

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

Oh i totally had the soundtrack and listend to it ALL THE TIME and may have cut bits out of the liner notes and tacked them on my bedroom walls *whistles*.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

Oh god he's so cute.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

look i think i remember swing kids accurately, alfred. barbara hershey plays robert sean leonard's mom and kenneth branagh is the nazi who seduces her. they're in it for like five seconds.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

i had no idea that Swing Kids even existed. and Thomas Carter directed it!

anime hitler, the futanari führer (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

i see Frank Whaley was in it... i hate that guy :[

anime hitler, the futanari führer (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

No I know he's in it – he just got no screen credit.

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

Shocked and angry, Peter shouts, "You're turning into a Nazi!" to which Thomas bluntly responds, "So what if I am?". Arvid suddenly realizes that there is no future for him in Germany and no hope of escape. He goes home and commits suicide in the bathtub, slitting his wrists with a broken record.

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

omg frank whaley was so tragic in it! this movie was responsible for me learning who django reinhardt was btw and i will forever associate him with frank whaley.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

Devastated, Thomas drowns himself in a water-filled tuba

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

I remember having like 1st generation German guilt for finding Bale so hot in that movie too and making sure to emphasize to myself that I found him hottest before he became a Nazi.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

Arvid! They cut off his fingers!

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

that movie is all about feeling guilty for finding christian bale as a hitler youth hot.

xp i know! arvid!

buzza, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:46 (twelve years ago) link

Since none of these movies were box office hits, how the hell did she learn about them?

Box office disappointments still get ads on TV, especially stations like MTV and Nickelodeon.

buzza, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

I don't get the "Sullivan's Travels" ref, Phil, because Albee is way funnier than LvT or satanic Al Pacino in this cockeyed caravan.

x-posts - I do remember Amy Locane. Iirc she's Depp's preppy love interest in Cry Baby.

I now have one of the songs off the Swing Kids sndtrk stuck in my head. WHY DO I REMEMBER THE FREKIN' SONGS?! argh.

I liked Bourne Ultimatum a whole lot, but that's about it on this list, of the ones I've seen. Would love to love Michael Clayton, but that one and Dolores C. seemed too enamored of their lugubriousness.

I really enjoyed this interview with Gilroy, though:

It was a good day to update the Albee thread while you guys are preoccupied with giants like Tony Gilroy, Lars von Trier, and whoever the fuck made Swing Kids.

I read them all, you choad, AND reactivated the Visconti thread. Von Trier isn't much better than Gilroy, by the way.

I can't think of a single white female around my age (28-32ish) who wasn't obsessed with Swing Kids (or isn't still obsessed).
