i am curious (itoi)

it is sad but their is so much beauty (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 03:44 (twelve years ago) link

The entire trilogy is printed in one book, too, plus it goes fast. I finished it in a day and a half.

Lol this thread is crabbit's beetlejuice beetlejuice beetlejuice

I love the way it builds up & how effectively it maneuvers in the emotional spaces between funny, weird, bleak, cute, cynical, repulsive, terrifying, heartwarming & heartbreaking.

I bought that last week but haven't played it yet. I have seen it mentioned along side earthbound so much

Ina-Garten-Da-Vida (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 04:45 (eight years ago) link

It's really good! I feel like there's a lot of depth, but that's just a guess, I was advised to go into this game with as little info as possible + that was good advice.

Definitely Earthbound-influenced enough so that it could be a game in the series in some ways, but still has a lot of interesting touches + fun gameplay elements in addition to the familiar ~feelllzzz&vibbezzz~

help computer (sleepingbag), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 09:05 (eight years ago) link

I just want all of the games as thoroughly and charmingly playful/quirky/bizarre as EarthBound and Katamari

What, sort of a pleasant level of amusing Japanese weirdness?

Professor Goodfeels (kingfish), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 19:41 (eight years ago) link

any and all levels of amusing Japanese weirdness tbh

Ina-Garten-Da-Vida (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 19:46 (eight years ago) link

Fair enough. That's what I liked about the PS2 & Dreamcast, as it seemed they were great for importing such rich veins of barely translated Japanese insanity into domestic consoles.

Professor Goodfeels (kingfish), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 20:28 (eight years ago) link

What are yr fav examples of these things?

Ina-Garten-Da-Vida (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 21:38 (eight years ago) link

LSD? Seaman? Incredible Crisis?

Ina-Garten-Da-Vida (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 21:41 (eight years ago) link

I've played Undertale twice now, and got two different endings. I don't know if I have it in me to play the "genocide" route.

One PS2 Japanese import I loved was Gregory Horror Show. The actual gameplay in itself was perhaps a little repetitive, but it didn't matter because it was fun to just hang around and spy on the crazy tenants going about their daily routines.

Duane Barry, Friday, 13 November 2015 01:18 (eight years ago) link

yooooo how do I play that (w/o dropping stupid coin on a mod-chipped PS2 and shipping an import game overseas)?

Ina-Garten-Da-Vida (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 13 November 2015 13:25 (eight years ago) link

Can't help with that, sorry. I live in a country where it was released!

it's a 3 year old Lenovo Thinkpad w/ onboard video. I just finished Super Mario 64 w/o any stuttering or errors but idk abt PS2

Ina-Garten-Da-Vida (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 13 November 2015 16:55 (eight years ago) link

Weird Japanese awesomeness:

That futuristic fishing game including as a demo on one of the OPM discs.

Seaman

Odama

Jet Set Radio

Katamari

Earthbound was like all of this, of course, particularly the tea break and power of collective prayer

Professor Goodfeels (kingfish), Friday, 13 November 2015 17:13 (eight years ago) link

Oh I forgot abt Jet Set Radio!! Ugh Seaman seems impossible to emulate. I've got a Dreamcast lying around somewhere, too. I should just track it down.

how are you playing this Stevie?

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Friday, 7 December 2018 22:23 (five years ago) link

I have a translated ROM and I've been bouncing back and forth between an emulator on my Wii and an emulator on my Android tablet (transferring the save file back and forth) but I finally set up my Raspberry Pi so now I'm finishing it on that

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 8 December 2018 03:54 (five years ago) link

oh wow. I'm really hoping they make some sort of ROM I can play on my SNES mini.

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Saturday, 8 December 2018 10:14 (five years ago) link

Doubtful, since it was a GBA game. Have you looked into the Raspberry Pi much? It’s $35 and you can build it out as an emulation box and fit literally every game for every console ever made up through the 16 bit era on a small SD card.

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 8 December 2018 13:16 (five years ago) link

belatedly, this is one of the few RPGs where stat up/stat down spells are not completely useless in practice, and in fact are necessary for most of the bosses

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

Stat buffs and debuffs are pretty much essential in Dragon Quest games(which is appropriate given how much inspiration the Mother series took from there), less so in Final Fantasy.

The only way Mother 3 would ever run on a SNES Mini is if you hacked it and installed Retroarch. There are plenty of devices that support GBA emulation though, even a soft-modded Wii will do it sufficiently.

waaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh i finished it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 16 December 2018 00:11 (five years ago) link

one year passes...

So uhhhh how exactly do I go about playing this thing? Does everyone just use computer roms/emulators of the translated version?

I’d love to figure out how I could get it on my 3DS but I know like nothing about homebrew and hacking and shit. (I just finished Earthbound so naturally I need to get on this)

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 3 May 2020 05:44 (three years ago) link

yeah it shouldn't be too hard to find a patched or translated rom, also there are a lot of ppl who sell the eng. translation as a bootleg gba cart on ebay. love mother 3, beautiful game, get in there!

lumen (esby), Sunday, 3 May 2020 05:59 (three years ago) link

3ds can't play gba games at least not from a cartridge so yeah you'd have to do some hacking stuff or get an actual gba or emulate it on pc
