yeah, that's not really true, let alone a bomb

many people would eat their own arms off for songs that "ok".

proof is in the pudding for me on that one: I have never heard a cover of U Got the Look or Starfish and Coffee I could stomach but I would fight-n-die for the originals.

i tried to find a decent and/or funny cover of The Cross on youtube but they are all ehhhh...

thought the one by died pretty might be good cuz they were okay but their version just ends up sounding like bruce springsteen.

drugs/crime/violence as subject matter is only 'played' to those privileged enough to be jaded about such subjects ... we can stick to timeless borgeoise concerns like love & adobe slabs, lol

in the 70's a band would get the chance to maybe put out one album in their career and the four members of that band would have, like, 50 years of combined music experience in 50 different bands. and now there is vampire weekend. shit happens.

well there have always been a dozen short-lived footnotes for every career artist -- how does that make the 70s different from now (sorry i don't know what the original thread this statement was made on, i'm probably missing some key context)

i think it was something about how people in the past would hone their abilities and pay their dues and learn many different styles over a period of years and post-punk this changed and post-internet it changed even more. something like that.
