Craig, forgive me- is that a particular synth or a musician?

Oh, sorry--DAF, the German band signed to Mute in the early '80s (here's a stream of their third album, from the particular period I was nodding to):

Yeah, Spirit Animal's a keeper. Just one run through of this one--sounds good so far. Side 2 sounds like it could have been called Majeure though. did they always split the songwriting on previous releases?

nice review ned! i was thinking the same thing about the drums. when someone upthread mentioned it was a JMJ rip, i was gonna reply 'but THE DRUMS! THEY HIT SO HARD!!'
― printf (diamonddave85), Friday, 20 May 2011 21:32 (twelve years ago) link
as a side note, can anyone suggest some kraut with heavy hitting motorik?
― printf (diamonddave85), Friday, 20 May 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link
the drums on this really don't work for me, they seem too detached from the synths and it all sounds a bit disjointed. Same as a lot of Spirit Animal and the Maserati split.. i think maybe the drumming is just not quite as intuitive as it was on Surface to Air, when it really seemed like he was feeling the rhythms
it's a shame, cos when they drop the drums on Shrunken Heads it lets the piece really breathe, so you can get lost in that ebb and flow they do so well. One of my favourites of the year that track
― merked, Friday, 20 May 2011 21:46 (twelve years ago) link
"Shrunken Heads" is a great track--tempted to attempt to play it alongside "Time Warp" by Eddy Grant in a DJ set...

Steve Moore just remixed a track of mine for release in the fall. So honored and psyched. It's gorgeous.

Wow, cool... Keep us posted! Steve Moore just started selling a 2xCD issue of Primative Neural Pathways and another OOP 12" - looks great, but it's $16, which is a bit steep for me at the moment.

sounds tight. LOOVE PNP, more than the new Zombi actually, though I'd hate to choose.

Steve Moore's new album as Lovelock ('Burning Feeling') is killing me softly right now - had heard/liked some stuff beforehand but it works super well as an album
it's a lot more pop/dancefloor/space disco than Zombi but there's still tons of sweeping synths and what have you
― Sylv_ebanks (DJ Mencap), Monday, 5 March 2012 15:19 (twelve years ago) link
oh wow, finally a lovelock album. thx for the heads up

Anybody else listen to Steve Moore's latest solo album Light Echoes? It's similar to the glacially paced cosmic ambience of the rest of Steve Moore's solo stuff (which is all pretty incredible IMO, especially Primitive Neural Pathways) but for some reason this one hits me a little more than rest...particularly the huge closing track Ancient Shorelines II.

Man I've missed out on that one. Also new Majeure on its way, as well as Umberto (who's obv not related except in spirit.)
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 1 November 2012 17:10 (eleven years ago) link
A new Majuere is very welcome. I think that their first one competes with much of the Zombi discography, except for maybe Surface to Air which I think is Zombi's pinnacle so far.
― Non-Stop Erotic Calculus (bmus), Thursday, 1 November 2012 17:32 (eleven years ago) link
I rate Cosmos above all, maybe because it's the one I heard first. Funny that I listen to Timespan & PNP alot more than the last proper Zombi record though. Escape Velocity was less satisfying because it ended up just sounding like a sampler of the solo stuff. Also maybe I'm just expecting more prog when they work together as well.

Same here-- from what I understand he did it for a film fest and didn't initially intend to release it. Just blasted Prophecy of the Black Widow last night and it is still ACE

Totally agree. POTBW is still an incredibly strong album. I too, was getting all seasonal with Umberto for the past week or so. What is the new album called?

When I was a metalhead I had some Zombi tracks on Relapse compilations, and now I'm into house Steve Moore has releases on LIES. It's like he's stalking me or something. I do like his stuff though so it's OK

So there is a new Majeure album out...and it's pretty good. I'm not sure how it stacks up with Timespan which I loved. I thought that even the Timespan remix album was pretty incredible. I need more time with Solar Maximum but for the most part it's pretty much an extension of the first one.
― Non-Stop Erotic Calculus (bmus), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:57 (eleven years ago) link
An extension in the best way possible.
― Non-Stop Erotic Calculus (bmus), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:58 (eleven years ago) link
not as good as timespan imo but timespan is so so great. still a darn good record tho. also the 'synthesizer of the gods' ep is top hole
i'd like to hear them both extend themselves a bit more on their solo stuff. surely moore has another 'henge' (in spirit if not necessarily in sound) in him somewhere
― boo-hoo-ty sapperticker (electricsound), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 23:00 (eleven years ago) link
I agree, Timespan would be awfully hard to match.
Henge certainly is great. Definitely one of the only albums out of this genre to legitimately scare me. Not that that is the ultimate goal here. But I think it even has a jump-scare moment in there somewhere.
I haven't heard Synthesizer of the Gods. That's a Majeure EP?

The new Steve Moore album Beloved Exile is good in general but I especially love the last track, “My Time Among the Snake Lords,” and how it shapeshifts seamlessly throughout - I think it might be the longest solo track he’s recorded? I may be wrong.

Looks to be about the same as the closing track on The Henge.
I didn't even know he had a new one, thanks for the tip. It's really quite good but not surprising- the quality level of his releases is generally high imo.
