thought the same thing initially, but the kind of outreach lex was praising isn't necessarily a contest to be the most straight-male-unfriendly. "it's about the audience she actively courts and welcomes into hip-hop."

i'm not arguing lex's point

J0rdan S., Sunday, 15 May 2011 21:12 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but all this does is cement the (straight male) notion that (hot) girls want to mess around w/ each other when she has tons of songs & videos centered around 100% hetero relationships

― J0rdan S., Sunday, May 15, 2011 5:07 PM (4 minutes ago) Bookmark

that just sounds like a catch 22 where no matter what she says, you're going to say it plays into what straight people believe or want to believe about bisexuals (or whether they exist etc.). i mean she raps to a chick in the "Lil Freak" video the same way she raps to guys in her other videos.

suggest ban the subbest man (some dude), Sunday, 15 May 2011 21:13 (twelve years ago) link

not that i'm saying she needs to be hailed as a groundbreaker or anything, but it seems like you're just downplaying any small ways she inarguably has broken out of typical female rapper gender roles/sexuality

okay, saw his argument as the hinge around which this was revolving. like, she's relevant to this discussion because...

contenderizer, Sunday, 15 May 2011 21:16 (twelve years ago) link

you still see dinosaurs out there who try to argue that hip-hop is innately a masculine, male space, and to defend it as such, so to have a rapper specifically pull gay men and girly girls (ie not just eye candy or "one of the boys") into it seems pretty important

Missy was the pioneer for this

in my world lots of girly girls loved Missy.

I can't make out a word of this shit, but it is amazing.

Apparently, he's queer, from New York, and some of his shit (not this track) is produced by Nguzunguzu.

The Reverend, Sunday, 12 June 2011 21:49 (twelve years ago) link

^ amazing is the word. love the seasick worz of beats, like crazy wisdom masters or something. the other self-produced track, "☥ + ☥", is kinda cool, too, but nowhere near as mind-blowing. nguzunguzu & boody b tracks are sick, though. fuckin love this guy.

I guess kreayshawn belongs in here? "gucci gucci" vid contains hints about her orientation that get explicit in some of her other vids.

or does it not count if she hangs w/ OF dudes

i was interviewed briefly for this radio programme that's on 1xtra tonight (9pm british time, which is in three hours) if anyone fancies tuning in: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b012kllk

No Homo: Hip Hop's Last Taboo

Today, 21:00 on BBC 1Xtra

Hip Hop is constantly evolving. Eminem made it possible to be a credible white rapper, Kanye achieved global success despite his privileged background and Nicki Minaj has played on her sexuality to become one of hip hop's biggest stars. But there's still one boundary the genre is struggling to cross. Where are the gay rappers?

Georgia Lewis-Anderson attempts to uncover the truth, following openly gay spoken-word poet Dean Atta as he takes the first steps to becoming an accepted and respected player on the UK hip hop scene, heading into the studio, performing live and getting that all important first play on national radio.

But are fans ready for an openly gay rapper? And will the industry support him?

Georgia also speaks with Plan B, Example, Estelle, Bashy, Mark Ronson and industry insiders from the UK and US to find out why the prospect of there being a gay rapper is such a taboo.

lex pretend, Sunday, 10 July 2011 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

i like that you got the last word! 'go hard; be good'

pity the dean atta track sounded kind of... dull.

recently a guy i know's been at the center of a 'gay rapper' controversy -- basically he's been on the local battle rap circuit for a few years, has a slight lisp and has been dressing more loud/hipsterish lately, decided to respond to gay rumors by spitting some o_O innuendo at a battle to throw an opponent off his game. then when video of the battle got online, it ended up all over worldstarhiphop, thisis50 as 'the gay battle rapper'. he says he's straight so i dunno how he's dealing with all this but it's pretty nuts.
