I love that record. People are going to start blinking whenever that & 7 Trumps get reissued, someone please make that happen.

should work...this is everything Bender I've got, except I Don't Remember Now. Most of the tracks, I don't know where they're from, some are probably the same as I Don't Remember, some are different versions of the same songs from the cassettes. Pop Surgery is included. I'll leave these here for a few days or so.

Any of you guys heard/have opinions on the Gary Wilson album (scroll down a little)? I have not heard it.

The best 'minimal synth' record I have is the Music Is Forever ep by Billy Synth. Very punk record - short tracks with just synths and vocals. He was an east coast psych revival guy - forget the names of his old bands. He's also the guy who put together the Psychedelic Unknowns compilation album series.

That new Todd Tamanend Clark 2xCD collection has all of his Into the Vision LP from the mid-'80s on it, too, which is all just him - mostly synth and heavy guitar. Very good, though not as fantastic as some of his rock band stuff.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:29 (eighteen years ago) link

If anyone's interested, here's a resend of the track "Stars in Heat," which was one of the two tracks I posted on the Todd Tamanend Clark thread. This one is from Into that Into the Vision album:

This thread has turned GREAT! Thanks for the Ruth White record and the rest of the Bender stuff.

danski (danski), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:02 (eighteen years ago) link

By the way, that's Cheetah Chrome on wah-wah guitar on that Clark track.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:55 (eighteen years ago) link

I've wondered if John Bender showed some more of his influences in song titles...I'm thinking mainly of the tracks "Glass" and "Mallinder"...odes to Philip and Stephen(of Cabaret Voltaire for those not familiar)?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I dunno about 'glass' (maybe) but the drums on 'mallinder' definitely sounds a lot like good early cabs

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:20 (eighteen years ago) link

man, these mp3's you posted are fantastic

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:24 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah...I didn't think it'd be a stretch for someone like that in the late 70s/early 80s to be very psyched on the Cabs.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:36 (eighteen years ago) link

tim, that Gary Wilson album is the biz. take a sleazy steely dan and add some wicked noize and synth doodles. and he's all creped out on the lasses. pick it up if you see it. i don't think i can recommend his new album on stonesthrow, but i only listened to it once in the store.

are there any rips floating around of plaster falling and pop surgery that don't have windows error message sounds all over them?

someone needs to reissue these records

jaxon, Thursday, 27 August 2009 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I emailed him but he never wrote back!

pop surgery 128kbps, but no errors

back in 2006 I was still burning mp3's to CDRs for listening, so I don't have the error-less 'plaster falling' mp3's anymore, but they're out there, maybe someone else can forward

Milton Parker, Friday, 28 August 2009 19:19 (fourteen years ago) link

for the eagle-eyed (and eared), there are recent grey area LP reissues floating around now of Pop Surgery and I Don't Remember Now...they sound great (considering the source material) and the repro covers are top-notch.

get 'em while they're around, folks! discogs sez 100 copies each.

(I Just) Died In Your Asshat Tonight, Thursday, 30 December 2010 18:14 (thirteen years ago) link

heard a rumor about that, available where?

dan selzer, Friday, 31 December 2010 07:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Would someone just reissue these like an adult? More copies, available somewhat easily? Is it that hard?

That's life in the world of shadows, Garkun. (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 31 December 2010 08:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I emailed him and didn't get a response. It's not always so easy to reissue things.

dan selzer, Friday, 31 December 2010 08:38 (thirteen years ago) link

there have been some sold on ebay recently, but i don't know where else online to grab 'em - seems like something Fusetron would carry?

if a dude happens to be in portland, or...Exiled Records has copies (at least they did a couple days ago). dunno if they do mailorder though.

Plaster Falling has been reissued as well. There are two versions, one being the Plaster Edition (which is limited - no idea how limited) and then the regular album which is half the price of the ltd.

very happy to read this. i assume it'll be all the various cassettes and comp appearances?

is the vod stuff legit or bootlegs? i wonder how he found bender?

ur reading from a season in hell but u don't know what it's abt (missingNO), Saturday, 9 April 2011 12:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Vod stuff I think has all been legit. Bender's been popping up lately. First via his son and his son's bandmate. More recently he commented on my friends eBay auction of one of his records, certifying it as a real copy.

dan selzer, Saturday, 9 April 2011 13:46 (thirteen years ago) link

VOD is as legit as a label can be, and I am very excited about that set.

Pretty sure the recent spate of LP reissues are all boots though, like the Snowy Red LP. Somebody finally realized that they could make some money pirating records that sell for hundreds of dollars.

sleeve, Saturday, 9 April 2011 15:32 (thirteen years ago) link

So I bought a bunch of bootlegs then, right? They sound terrific though.

van smack, Saturday, 9 April 2011 15:46 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, not pointing fingers at you or anything, I bought the Snowy Red LP! Glad they sound good.

sleeve, Saturday, 9 April 2011 16:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I kinda figured that. I'm happy with these even though they aren't legit. I'm curious who put these out.

What's the annoyance?

dan selzer, Friday, 1 April 2016 17:52 (eight years ago) link

dude's store (physical store) is overpriced, and he had one of his employees follow my friend through the store as if he was going to steal shit.

is the reissue different stuff from the VOD stuff?

also i am convinced that cincinnati is a really cool city even tho i have never been there so this may be the motivation

five years pass...

So, it looks like the return of John Bender resulted in nearly 100 Soundcloud + YouTube tracks in 2016 (98 to be exact, and they don't precisely overlap), 55 in 2017, and 17 in 2018...the latter two years also feature what I presume are live improvisations for performances of his)... and then only two in 2019, and then silence...I'm hoping he figured the second time around has its run and that he's still with us.
