This poll would have been more sense hadn't Herman's Hermits been among the options. Then it would be a Manchester indie poll rather than a Manchester poll.

I only really threw HH in there as a joke pick....I din't think anyone would take them over The Buzzcocks or The Smiths...oh well.
― liamail, Sunday, 27 January 2008 13:54 (sixteen years ago) link
Hermits, no. But Hollies are better than any of the current indie stuff. None of Manchester's recent indie heroes have ever released an album as good as "Butterfly". Even though I love Oasis and Stone Roses.

What about Working For A Nuclear Free City? They're a good modern indie band.
(note: the rason they aren't on the list is because they've only got one album at this point, which I don't think is enough for a band that is still going)
― liamail, Sunday, 27 January 2008 14:00 (sixteen years ago) link
The Fall obv

Trudat. But which of these are from Salford?
― Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 January 2008 14:50 (sixteen years ago) link
the verve -- well, near enough.

it's all "oop north".

Noodle OTM re:Clash of the Titans
I think we should all vote for Inspiral Carpets just because I'd fall on the floor laughing if they won.
― Bimble, Sunday, 27 January 2008 17:25 (sixteen years ago) link
That whole Madchester thing was some real meathead shit.
― Bodrick III, Sunday, 27 January 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link
while I did spend a happy bunch of seconds musing on who I would have included in the Manchester list (where were Big Flame from?) and to be honest I love 75% of the bands listed, but no tactical voting here so its The Buzzcocks. (though it would be nice if Magazine got a few votes)
― Sandy Blair, Sunday, 27 January 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago) link
who will be the 2nd after The Fall?
― Zeno, Sunday, 27 January 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link
No, Madchester wasn't all meathead shit.
Well, Stone Roses and Happy Mondays weren't....all else were.
― liamail, Sunday, 27 January 2008 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link
Those are the main culprits! Totally responsible for loads of studes swaggering around trying to be hard and working class, the association of being working class with being thick and violent and the glamourisation of that (very dodgy) idea. "Hallelujah" is a great song, though.
― Bodrick III, Sunday, 27 January 2008 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link
WTF?! It's not Shaun Ryder's fault that the world is full of cunts.
But his new record does suck cock though....
― liamail, Sunday, 27 January 2008 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link
I'll guess Buzzcocks or maybe Joy Division
― steampig67, Sunday, 27 January 2008 19:59 (sixteen years ago) link
HERMANS
― Confounded, Sunday, 27 January 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago) link

hatemachine777 (16 hours ago) Well, jobs are usually miserable. You obviously want to do something much more fun, like hang out all day or something.

Obviously lacking a lot, but if I just ignore Herman's Hermits being in there, I can easily go for Oasis as the best Manchester new wave/indie act, followed by Magazine, perhaps. :)

― Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 00:04 (sixteen years ago) link
Wow, I thought The Fall would romp this in, what with it being ILM.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 00:05 (sixteen years ago) link
ILM is contrarian as always although I believe this is mainly a matter of a number of people taking the piss to annoy the poll poster :)

Me and my tulpa demand proportional voting in ILM polls. Its what Howard would want.
I'd have liked to be able to vote for Slaughter and the Dogs too, though I wouldn't have.

― André, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 13:15 (sixteen years ago) link
Glad to see there's no Oasis fanboys here - 2 votes = good.
Buzzcocks only 5 votes? Ok...
Inspiral Carpets = 0 votes = clever people must use this site
Magazine deserved a few votes. Not the most, but a few wold have been nice.
How's about a Best of Grunge poll?

(Also, I think when you're doing a big city, you have to extend it to the "Greater ______" area, in which case Wigan can count. But not Northwich!)

What would feature on a "Best of Manchester, post-2015 version"?
I guess that could include the "classic" bands if they'd released anything good since then.

There's no thread for her but I'd say Denise Johnson deserves a place in this one. Great thread here in response to her passing away:
RIP Denise. No one person has sung on so many of my favourite records ever. Including this one. What desperately sad news 💔 https://t.co/wsm0EGZe4c— Sonic Cathedral (@soniccathedral) July 27, 2020
