Maybe I should've voted for Beechwood Park. That Maybe After He's Gone-Brief Candles stretch is the best. Half of Maybe's appeal is setting the mood for Beechwood Park. Cheerful Zombies songs (This Will Be Our Year, Friends of Mine) are great but not very convincing. Thankfully Butcher's Tale keeps those two apart.

My fav part of Maybe After He's Gone is that "All the days and all the nights" bridge. But you're right, it does set the mood for Beechwood. Flawless sequencing IMO.

Pit I didn't see this. "A Rose For Emily" would have gotten one more vote.

don't remember if i voted, but "hung up on a dream" is one of the most beautiful things i've heard. it has an unassuming structure that circles and builds and damn near breaks your heart by the time it gets to to the end.

in fact, the strength of most of the songs on this album is that their tenderness and understated poise prevents them from being corny or overly saccharine.

This poll is madness. Every song on the album is great, but Time of the Season easily towers over the rest.

Time of the season is so much better than the rest of this album. You might as well not vote for somebody to love on surrealistic pillow because wouldn't want to be predictqble by picking a truly great song over solid workmanlike album cuts.

Yeah, I just listened to the album recently after too much time away from it and was pleasantly reminded how great it is throughout, but 'Hung Up on a Dream' is still and always has been the one that makes me go whoa. Sure, it'sa bit overwrought and maudlin but it's also gooseflesh the whole way through. 'Walking in the Sun' has a similar effect (non-album track, I believe, it's in the Zombie Heaven box set).

Nothing against the winner but yeah, Hung Up On a Dream really does it for me, perfect song. Glad that it’s remained fairly off-the-radar, I could easily see it becoming a defining-the-60’s standard and getting beaten to death like White Rabbit.

I feel that I must be preaching to the choir here but in case there are members of the choir who haven't yet heard the word, the Left Banke's Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina is an incredibly worthy companion to this album.

"Maybe After He's Gone" always strikes me as an obvious influence on Big Star.

A few weeks ago my kid bought his first Internet vinyl, and it was a 68 US press Odyssey and Oracle. Or something. Anyhow he drag me upstairs within an hour and said listen listen. And this will be our year has a horn section and it feels quite strange.

xpost The aforementioned Zombie Heaven box set (which stunningly seems to still be in print, I got mine sometime in the late '90s) has, I believe, all of their recorded material. Worth it, imo.
