yeah, the guy singing behind was annoying, but that clip is delightful!

bah I missed this
altho I would've voted for Friends of Mine

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

And This Will Be Our Year in a decisive victory! That's what I voted for in the end. It's also good to know that there are no Zombies-hating pod people in our midst.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 23:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha, also I guess the dude who liked Changes followed through on his abstinence threat.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 23:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe I should've voted for Beechwood Park. That Maybe After He's Gone-Brief Candles stretch is the best. Half of Maybe's appeal is setting the mood for Beechwood Park. Cheerful Zombies songs (This Will Be Our Year, Friends of Mine) are great but not very convincing. Thankfully Butcher's Tale keeps those two apart.

My fav part of Maybe After He's Gone is that "All the days and all the nights" bridge. But you're right, it does set the mood for Beechwood. Flawless sequencing IMO.

billstevejim, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Pit I didn't see this. "A Rose For Emily" would have gotten one more vote.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 15 June 2007 09:40 (sixteen years ago) link

three years pass...

don't remember if i voted, but "hung up on a dream" is one of the most beautiful things i've heard. it has an unassuming structure that circles and builds and damn near breaks your heart by the time it gets to to the end.

in fact, the strength of most of the songs on this album is that their tenderness and understated poise prevents them from being corny or overly saccharine.

This poll is madness. Every song on the album is great, but Time of the Season easily towers over the rest.

wk, Saturday, 11 September 2010 22:52 (thirteen years ago) link

^am inclined to agree; here's my ranking:

Time of the Season
Changes
Hung up on a Dream
Beechwood Park
I Want Her She Wants Me
Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914)
A Rose for Emily
Brief Candles
Maybe After He's Gone
Care of Cell 44
Friends of Mine
This Will Be Our Year

don't get the love for "this will be our year". did y'all get married june '07 or something?

hobbes, Sunday, 12 September 2010 00:06 (thirteen years ago) link

aoww move care of cell 44 up a spot or two.

hobbes, Sunday, 12 September 2010 00:07 (thirteen years ago) link

the outcome of this poll is so perplexing i can't even casually disregard it.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 12 September 2010 00:50 (thirteen years ago) link

don't remember if i voted on this one but cell 44 encapsulates everything great about this album pretty well imo, would probably be my pick

ciderpress, Sunday, 12 September 2010 00:56 (thirteen years ago) link

love the harmonies on this album so much btw, it's like a crash course in slipping non-diatonic chords into pop songs

ciderpress, Sunday, 12 September 2010 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Time of the season is so much better than the rest of this album. You might as well not vote for somebody to love on surrealistic pillow because wouldn't want to be predictqble by picking a truly great song over solid workmanlike album cuts.

Yep, and way ahead of the pack!

Result of this poll is the sort of horrid clumsy Americanism one might have expected. Obviously it's not a bad song but it's also the one I expected in that video

imago, Saturday, 20 February 2021 09:28 (three years ago) link

It might be about the 8th or 9th best song on the album, will give it that

imago, Saturday, 20 February 2021 09:28 (three years ago) link

Not really a favourite of mine either.

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Saturday, 20 February 2021 09:45 (three years ago) link

I Want Her She Wants Me is the correct best song

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Saturday, 20 February 2021 09:48 (three years ago) link

I'd have voted "Beechwood Park".

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 20 February 2021 14:02 (three years ago) link

Still "Hung Up On a Dream", despite the silly lyric about men with flowers resting in their hair.

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Saturday, 20 February 2021 15:22 (three years ago) link

I might have voted for Friends of Mine. Very stark contrast between chipper surface/sad lyrical undertones there

J. Sam, Saturday, 20 February 2021 15:36 (three years ago) link

Yeah, I just listened to the album recently after too much time away from it and was pleasantly reminded how great it is throughout, but 'Hung Up on a Dream' is still and always has been the one that makes me go whoa. Sure, it'sa bit overwrought and maudlin but it's also gooseflesh the whole way through. 'Walking in the Sun' has a similar effect (non-album track, I believe, it's in the Zombie Heaven box set).

The Mandolinrainian (Old Lunch), Saturday, 20 February 2021 15:39 (three years ago) link

yeah really lame winner... totally sounds out of place on this album imo... it’s all about that soupy end of the first side.. beechwood park, hung up on a steam... would’ve voted time of the season, honestly tho

brimstead, Saturday, 20 February 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link

steam on

brimstead, Saturday, 20 February 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link

I prefer the steamier tracks too.

I would have voted Brief Candles I think, but HUOAD a verrrrry close second

imago, Saturday, 20 February 2021 18:47 (three years ago) link

“time of the season” is certainly steamy

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Saturday, 20 February 2021 20:15 (three years ago) link

Strong contender for "the most overrated underrated album" afaic, it's good but give me a singles and b-sides collection over this any day.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Saturday, 20 February 2021 21:47 (three years ago) link

This might be Brief Candles just b/c it's the one where Colin Blunstone starts singing the most times.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Saturday, 20 February 2021 22:06 (three years ago) link

(xp) Disagree there, I've never really liked anything else they did.

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Saturday, 20 February 2021 22:36 (three years ago) link

Nothing against the winner but yeah, Hung Up On a Dream really does it for me, perfect song. Glad that it’s remained fairly off-the-radar, I could easily see it becoming a defining-the-60’s standard and getting beaten to death like White Rabbit.

JoeStork, Sunday, 21 February 2021 06:24 (three years ago) link

I feel that I must be preaching to the choir here but in case there are members of the choir who haven't yet heard the word, the Left Banke's Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina is an incredibly worthy companion to this album.

The Mandolinrainian (Old Lunch), Sunday, 21 February 2021 08:41 (three years ago) link

"Maybe After He's Gone" always strikes me as an obvious influence on Big Star.

I Advance Masked (Vast Halo), Sunday, 21 February 2021 23:23 (three years ago) link

I'm not sure I hear that... maybe in "India Song"?

A few weeks ago my kid bought his first Internet vinyl, and it was a 68 US press Odyssey and Oracle. Or something. Anyhow he drag me upstairs within an hour and said listen listen. And this will be our year has a horn section and it feels quite strange.

pence's eye juice (Hunt3r), Monday, 22 February 2021 00:49 (three years ago) link

xpost The aforementioned Zombie Heaven box set (which stunningly seems to still be in print, I got mine sometime in the late '90s) has, I believe, all of their recorded material. Worth it, imo.

The Mandolinrainian (Old Lunch), Monday, 22 February 2021 01:04 (three years ago) link

Thx i am gonna hunt up and buy for the kid 👍
