only real duds i've heard are james lavelle and amalgamationz of sound...

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 21:00 (twenty years ago) link

bullshit re: doc martin. i had dismissed it as the usual boring shit until i actually listened to it (go fig) and found it to be an exquisitely mixed trip through different house styles with an extremely slow build that caught my attention immediately.
other recommendations: bugz, swayzak (though some transitions are lazy)
the rest: bah.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 22:56 (twenty years ago) link

the whole concept of a mix CD is corrupt bullshit.... for money grubbing wankers and macdonalds eaters.

i havent eaten at mcdonald's in over two years. i still listen to mix cds though. as for the other contention, well you should see my amex bill. ;-)
does anyone else like the craig richards disc?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 05:56 (twenty years ago) link

the James Lavelle isn't that bad (but then I only really wanted it because I wanted Green Velvet - "La La Land" somewhere), tho he is SHIT SHIT SHIT live.

is the mayer one already out, or coming out?

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:11 (twenty years ago) link

all music is saying nov 3 but the computer at my record store is saying january, so the answer: sometime during this winter ;-)

i dont think i actually know who james lavelle is exactly? is he the eptiome of "proper" "beardy" tastemakers ?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:15 (twenty years ago) link

former MoWax dude, member of U.N.K.L.E. which used to also have DJ Shadow until Shadow figured out Lavelle was a dick. tho the phrase "he is the epitome of "proper" "beardy" tastemakers" puts it better than i could.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:22 (twenty years ago) link

Fabric's website sez the 3rd too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:25 (twenty years ago) link

"beardy" is not a common adjective in the u.s. so i am glad i used it right ;-) all of those years of paying import prices for mixmag have finally paid off!

goldsworthy now in the dfa. lavelle, erm yeah.

well yesterday i was in one of the local used stores and i found fabric 01, 02 and 03 for $8.99 apiece. those are craig richards, terry francis and jon marsh. so far i've only listened to fabric 01 but ...

IT'S BETTER THAN "IMMER"!!

The Radioactive Man one is really very good, as is Swayzak - wasn't too keen on Grooverider though. I love the John Peel one though - it's basically like listening to a "best of" of his radio shows except he puts the records on the correct speed and doesn't talk for hours on end.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:04 (nineteen years ago) link

i *really* hate the packaging too. fckng horrible it is.

piscesboy, Friday, 18 June 2004 10:38 (nineteen years ago) link

haha the guy from fabric sent a nasty email when i complained about the packaging in a review. "perhaps he means the promo copies." no, perhaps i mean the HORRIBLY UGLY METAL CASES THAT SCRATCH THE FUCK OUT OF THE CD'S!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:25 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, horrible metal cases. as well mayer + swayzak 2 best mixes

Bojan Mandic (bojanm), Friday, 18 June 2004 14:55 (nineteen years ago) link

one year passes...
I picked up the Diplo disc. It's a good mix, but I feel sort of silly for buying it -- it's more the kind of thing that I'd like to hear in a party or club than on headphones at home. Not that I should be surprised, I guess.

Diplo's mixing is also occasionally a little weak. When he transitions from The Cure to Bombs Over Baghdad, the two songs are blatantly out of tune with each other and it's ugly.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 16 January 2006 03:39 (eighteen years ago) link

So now they're all £6 a piece in HMV (including the Michael Mayer, if anyone doesn't have it), should we do this again? With added bitchiness, if necessary?

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Monday, 13 February 2006 08:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I've only got that one and Ivan Smagghe (which I thought was very diaappointing) and someone copied me the Diplo, Swayzak and Akufen, but I haven't had a chance to listen to all of them yet.

I agree with Abbadavid that the Diplo one does sound like it would be good out, but not necessarily something you want to listen to a lot. That's why it's good they're cheap now! Mixes should be more disposable.

(So er ... why this thread, but never mind)

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Monday, 13 February 2006 09:03 (eighteen years ago) link

JLC (aka THE MIX THAT WILL NEVER DIE), weatherall, mayer = my faves. would like to hear the akufen and swayzak ones sometime. and the carl craig and smagghe. too many to get around to!

truth be told I prefer dj-kicks as a series though.

they're starting a podcast

The inaugural fabric podcast will be released on October 24, 2007 hosted by our long-time resident Craig Richards. Then Andrew Weatherall takes the hot seat, sharing tales of his earliest musical memories and influences. Full details of artists scheduled to host these sessions will be announced shortly

dmr, Thursday, 18 October 2007 16:35 (sixteen years ago) link

you'd have thought that the RA podcast & online radio must have severely dented the Fabric CD sales, if they were ever significant - there's just no way they can keep pace. they should slow down the release schedule and have less frequent, but bigger 'event' CDs like the Villalobos. and the podcast can pick up the slack...

plus with all the money they'd save on licensing, artwork, distribution etc, they could afford to pack fewer people into the club! :-/

Herbalizer one killed me yesterday

J0hn D., Friday, 19 October 2007 00:58 (sixteen years ago) link

As shitty as a lot of the mixing on Nitin Sawhney's Fabric issue is, I really dig the back to back Homelands mixing, especially somewhere between 13:00-18:00.

The Herbaliser's mix is also good, as is DJ Format's.

jbill, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:53 (sixteen years ago) link

james murphy/pat mahoney one, ewan pearson one, villalobos one all worth yr time.

haitch, Friday, 19 October 2007 05:49 (sixteen years ago) link

james murphy/pat mahoney one

yeah I have been listening to this a ton, it's really good

the ewan pearson has plenty of good tracks (panopeeps!) but the jahcoozi song that opens it is kinda gross

dmr, Friday, 19 October 2007 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

I really can't get into the Pearson one - his SciFiHiFi and Resident Advisor mixes were fantastic in different ways but on this one he's all 'OMG I am doing a Fabric Mix - I AM SERIOUS EWAN THIS IS SERIOUS MIX' and it falls a bit flat for me.

But still OMG podcast! Excited.

Matt DC, Friday, 19 October 2007 16:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Craig Richards is a great DJ, never hear much about him on ILX though.

This set is one of my favorite mixes of the year, it goes all over the place (well within a house'n'techno context) but the tracks flow so well:

I AM SERIOUS EWAN THIS IS SERIOUS MIX

haha it is kinda like that

esp. the dark carl craig-ish part in the middle

dmr, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:28 (sixteen years ago) link

"the ewan pearson has plenty of good tracks (panopeeps!) but the jahcoozi song that opens it is kinda gross"

Pearson has always had a weakness for good tracks with bad vocals.

"I really can't get into the Pearson one - his SciFiHiFi and Resident Advisor mixes were fantastic in different ways but on this one he's all 'OMG I am doing a Fabric Mix - I AM SERIOUS EWAN THIS IS SERIOUS MIX' and it falls a bit flat for me."

I felt this way too but it grew on me - it's not a pretty as the other two mixes but it's pretty compulsive stuff ultimately, esp. the last third or so.

stoked for the next two: jay haze and radio slave!!

the jay haze is pretty cool, I've spun that a few times in the last week since I got it. starts out with some smoked-out reggae-tinged type of stuff then wavers back and forth between that type of vibe and staticky minimal

co-sign on can't wait for radioslave

dmr, Monday, 8 June 2009 21:20 (fourteen years ago) link

i do like me a radioslave mix, but sometimes i feel like i'm the only person who really finds the productions (under the radioslave moniker) to be completely lackluster and, if i may say so, boring.

the table is the table, Monday, 8 June 2009 22:19 (fourteen years ago) link

eep. haven't heard any new ones in a while but I like Bell Clap and loooove No Sleep 3 (guess that's more of an edit really) and Deer in the Headlights remix &c.

reggae-tinged type of stuff

bad description ... more like downtempo or something. stuttery piano n breakbeats with some housey keyboards deep in the mix, then melds into some sparse low piano 4-4 beat stuff. and a lot of tracks have that sizzling hisssssssss

Listened to that the other day, very suited for an early spring - extremely pleasant and entirely unchallenging.

chap, Monday, 25 February 2019 13:51 (five years ago) link

Yeah the Bonobo mix sounds pretty great when all you can see is blue sky.

I don't care about Bonobo as an artist at all (I always assumed he was kind of politely unchallenging, Four Tet with all the rough edges sanded off). But if Dixon had turned in this mix - which he quite easily could have - people would be falling over themselves to hosanna it.
