I always thought Chris Patten seemed like a fairly reasonable cove - so what on earth was he doing serving so long in a Thatcher govt? It does seem to disqualify you from basic human decency.

No Ian Curtis?

No Mark E. Smith?

PhilK, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Where's the proof Mark E Smith is a Tory?

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:25 (sixteen years ago) link

PAY YOUR RATES!!!

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:26 (sixteen years ago) link

age of the professional politician. i doubt many of the young tory front bench today would really have a problem with serving under a labour PM, but it's a matter of clans and positioning.

PurgaTory?

(nevermind)

StanM, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Mark E Smith hates socialism doesn't he? That probably makes him a Tory. (xposts)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it makes him Labour!

When I was younger, my dad said David Owen would probably join the Tories eventually. Now Owen's making noises about returning to the Labour Party. Shows how things have changed.

Alba, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

He just likes annoying people

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

... that's Mark E. Smith I mean, not David Owen... MES does it deliberately, David Owen annoys people just by being

Chris Patten = Poll Tax yes?

ILX poster (deleted to save flame war)

A compendium of ilxors calling other ilxors Tories would be a fine old read. Maybe someone with nothing to do could start it?

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:40 (sixteen years ago) link

MES hates socialism because he went to Bulgaria in the 80s and everyone was wearing the same brown trousers.

Alba, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:42 (sixteen years ago) link

... as him?

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Fuck them all.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:43 (sixteen years ago) link

John Bercow.

Peter Bottomley was (probably still is) a genuinely nice guy.

Bob Six, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:45 (sixteen years ago) link

i sawa philip hammond - shadow chief secretary of the treasury - on newsnight last night and he has a great way of talking - it seems as though he's about to laugh at every word that comes out of his mouth. but he actually sounded pretty sensible!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:07 (sixteen years ago) link

You see this is how they win elections...first you think they're nice guys, then you think they sound pretty sensible, next thing you know they've got over the desk and you're taking it like a dog. And you're loving it. And saying thank you, can I have four more years...

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I had dinner with Peter Bottomley once, he was a wanker.

Ed, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:19 (sixteen years ago) link

But not a waker?

That must have really spoiled the meat course.

Ed - Impression based on him stopping to help change a car-tyre in poor weather. Political views not discussed!

Bob Six, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I pwned Theresa May for being basically 'I'm all right, Jill' re. women in the workplace when we were both on this panel discussion once. Good times.

WAHT no Widdicombe?

Every time someone votes in this poll, a bit of John Major dies inside.

Konnie Huq got in trouble recently for being enthusiastically pro-Ken in some public appearance or something, so I doubt she's a Tory.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:17 (sixteen years ago) link

o rly? still hot as.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Mark E. Smith openly declared that he voted Tory in the 1983 General Election.

I thought this was quite well known.

PhilK, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Jim Davidson was the only other person in Britain to support the Falklands War?

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, I was broadly in favour.

So that's at least 3.

PhilK, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm amazed that "Tony Blair" was omitted as an option. He's normally a cert for this kind of poll.

Satire obviously IS dead.
