http://www.largeheartedboy.com/blog/archive/2008/11/2008_yearend_on_1.html lots of lists

Other Music best of 08 topped by El Guincho, Crystal Stilts, Grouper ...

that el guincho album is pretty good. surprised it's not more widely cited. seems like it could've at least gotten the slot reserved for manu chao or congotronics or something.

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 13 December 2008 06:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Yep, everytime I return to El Guincho it seems like I am hearing it for the first time... in a good way.

Surprised the Dig Lazarus isn't on more lists. It'll be in my Top Five and it's almost nowhere to be seen.

It's on virtually every list!

Matt DC, Saturday, 13 December 2008 16:07 (fifteen years ago) link

There's even a separate ilx thread with people grumbling that's overrated and they don't understand why it is showing up on so many lists

the top 20 ain't bad but let's remember that they named the fabolous/ne-yo song the #1 single of 2007

lol yeah i was just looking back at last year's list because there are so many super old songs like "Roc Boys" that i felt like they must have slipped and listed some songs 2 years in a row

Piney G. Pinefoxen (some dude), Sunday, 14 December 2008 03:47 (fifteen years ago) link

this list is funny too because unlike the indie rock lists where tv on the radio is #1 and lil wayne is thrown in seemingly at random, on here it's the other way around

top ten is solid-ish, im not a big fan of "low" but obv it was huge and i think that santogold-apes-MIA song is really stupid-sounding even tho i like her, but otherwise its good -- the next ten are pretty wtf. Gnarls barkley? who tf is still listening to that? i dont know how many people voted but it seems odd that its that high. also i couldnt stand 'superstar' -- if yr gonna do old lupe fiasco songs 'dumb it down' and 'hip hop saved me' are both way better

haha but probably a good 65 songs on there are bangers - the rest is just totally wtf, which i guess is good in a way

merriweather passantino pavilion (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 December 2008 03:58 (fifteen years ago) link

otoh should you be rewarded for listing all the good songs on the radio?

merriweather passantino pavilion (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 December 2008 03:59 (fifteen years ago) link

i definitely give them credit for listing good radio songs that get ignored on most every other list. also i seriously doubt that that list was 'voted' on rather than just kind of assembled by committee and intensely strategized. i mean they probably had to bend over backwards to get that whole 'year of wayne and kanye' top 5, which is my least favorite part...i mean there's something to be said for tokenism when it means just letting an artist be represented once or twice in a top 10.

Piney G. Pinefoxen (some dude), Sunday, 14 December 2008 06:03 (fifteen years ago) link

weird mavado pick...'on the rock' is much better than 'so special'. obv the first list i've seen that i've enjoyed, even with the wtfisms.

a pity they went for mediocre lead singles to represent some artists though...eg i like 'just fine' just fine but 'roses' is surely loads more outstanding even though it was an album track? and if even rolling stone can bring itself to recognise random ciara leaked tracks, surely vibe doesn't need to choose the mediocre 'go girl' above 'high price', 'echo' or 'work'?

there are some wtf choices that i kind of understand (lol all rappers love coldplay) but i can't think up one reason why vibe magazine would feel the need to include far and away the worst bloc part song of all time - they don't even have name cache or anything anymore

♪☺♫☻ (gr8080), Sunday, 14 December 2008 14:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Vibe don't have a clue obv. And including Coldplay in such a list is just bullshit as then Coldplay should have been on top. Coldplay are obviously objectively way better than any R&B, hip-hop or dance will ever be.
