yeah, I noticed that the solution is on the other side of the maze.
Mazes is the best record to come out of the moon duo/wooden shjips axis, imo.
Heard nothing but great things about both acts in concert, though.

Wooden Shijps were great when I saw them in London a year and a half ago. I think Moon Duo are playing here around now too- might have to go see them.

now you are making me want to buy the vinyl.

I prefer the Escape EP/LP but that may be just because I was exposed to it first.

My vinyl copy of the Mazes album is waiting to be picked up now from the post office. Can't wait. Should also be seeing them on Tuesday in London - will report back. Loved the Shjips live a couple of times now - I see comments above saying this lot are better? Belter!

yeah this album is incredible & so much better than the 12" from last year

flopson, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

I actually prefer Escape to Mazes as well, although that may change...Escape hits a sort of sweet spot between the first Snapper EP and Loop's Fade Out that I can't get enough of.

Not sure why Mazes doesn't do the same...

ST 337 (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 16:26 (twelve years ago) link

Mazes is just a lot mellower and therefore better for this time of year, imo. I love Loop, Suicide and The Heads but then I also love VU's Live In 1969, The Silver Apples and Neu! as well.

yeah, this. wooden shjips are revelatory live, but the records (other than vol 1) always left me a little cold. not that they're bad or anything; they just never quite got in under my skin. and i like mazes a hell of a lot more than previous moon duo. concision, hooks and space = <-_->

i've been silent on this too but it's one of my most-played (and therefore favorite) albums this year. so so catchy and great. super simple formula—organ/guitar hook, couple lyrics, huge overdriven guitar outburst—but it works well.

Especially "Fallout". Didn't think much of them when they played at Primavera, but they were on right at the beginning of the first day and might have been better at a more ethereal time of night.

this is pretty good but I do not like it as much as that Shjips 12" on Mexican Summer, which is my fave thing from these folks so far.

I assumed I would love Mazes but it turns out I don't...its more laidback approach to the Shjips' usual shjtick just seems to come out boring for me. I'm sure I'll give it another chance or two though.

Now is probably the best time in recent memory to have it stolen, it's been reissued on both vinyl and CD recently.

Cool mix. Personally I find it hard to use an Aphrodite's Child song that isn't "Magic Mirror" in a mix, though.

i started this thread quite enthusiastically, but in the long run wind up something of a fence-sitter. i dearly love their sound and went through brief but intense honeymoon periods with both mazes and circles, but in the long run, neither had much staying power for me. i tend to get bored a few tracks in. maybe the new drummer will help.

I don’t know if I’m on board with the new album. Feels like some sort of indie version of U2’s pop. As if they’re trying to make some sort of psychedelic disco album but ultimately it ends up sounding overwrought and it’s drenched in way too much effects. It’s dizzying... not in a good way.
