Really didn't like the Egyptrixx album at all

not even Rooks Theme? shish

Let me help you with your URL problems (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:03 (twelve years ago) link

(yes, hyetal pushes the same buttons in me that witch house does, so i'll just pre-empt that zing there)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:04 (twelve years ago) link

"Ribble to Amazon" is my favourite Bashmore production, real nice summery vibe. Couldn't get on with the Egyptrixx album at all.

Number None, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:05 (twelve years ago) link

i'm pretty much in like-not-love territory with egyptrixx's productions myself, though the ikonika remix of "the only way up" was awesome

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:06 (twelve years ago) link

There was one good track on the Egyptrixx album but I can't remember what, the rest sounded so... uninspired.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:07 (twelve years ago) link

Thes might be my fave Bashmore and Hytetal bits...

Dispite being really into both of them I wasn't feeling those Velour tracks, wouldn't mind hearing them do more though.Hyetal's collabs with Peverelist and Shortstuff are amazing though.

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:39 (twelve years ago) link

the importance of colour and having bass that does something other than throb and glower.

Most of the producers mentioned here seem to be working on a deliberately icy, inhuman sound..... it's hard for me to love a lot of it. Which is funny, because I used to get off - and still do - on extremely jacking techno. I dunno. There's an incredible fussiness to a lot of it.

Or maybe younger listeners aren't burdened with unpleasant memories of the jazzier side of jungle so it doesn't bother them as much..

unpleasant you say...

Heh. I realise this is not a unique complaint, and "this isn't dubstep" but still.

xxxxxxxp

alex are your friends dudes who (used to??) do the night trackin house night at that place in the old port whose name i cant recall always meant to go to one of those

― flopson, Monday, May 9, 2011 11:26 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark

yes. these days they do the night tracking house night type thing at Blizzarts on Thursdays for their Baller's Social Club Night, and open for whoever they bring into town. they have piknic electronique the weekend of OSHEAGA and have booked Girl Unit and DâM-FunK, which should be properly epic.

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

I really dug the Velour ep, actually. Probably my favourite Night Slugs release outside of Girl Unit. (And, surely, shouldn't we get a mod to change the title of the thread to some sort of all-purpose night slugs one for ease of discovery?)

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

cooooooooooool i will go as often as possible this summer

flopson, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:13 (twelve years ago) link

I always forget who is from Montreal on ILM. Heh. I'm sure we will bump into one another without knowing it!

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

i had no idea flopson was canadian let alone from MTL

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

People did not know Jacques Greene was from MTL.
People did not know flopson was from MTL.
There is only one realistic conclusion to draw here.

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

optimum - not sure if there are any relevant opinions to be had about this track

― no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Tuesday, May 10, 2011 12:31 AM Bookmark

we could talk about LONE and the return of pre-autechre IDM styles

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:27 (twelve years ago) link

also i've been following this thread with a bit of interest and my only question is why don't these guys get more love on ILM?

for my money much more exciting than night slugs

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

what sort of things were you thinking of? xp

there's bits of bleep all over this comp

i've had 'arpjam' running thru my mind all day

no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

the optimum release that's really whoa was his debut on planet mu - max power/crash riddim/lily - all so confident and effective. his new track in that ikonika mix i posted this morning is really awesome too.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:30 (twelve years ago) link

i like most of the releases i've heard on pattern though never noticed it as a label before now.

i can't get into lone's stuff at all :/

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

I love Lone, although any record with a tune called Petrcane Beach Track is pretty much bound to appeal to me.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

PTN is pretty sweet yeah. Breach, Hypno, DJ Dom, T.Williams are all ace. The Hackman and Doc Daneeka 12"s are good too but not quite the same level for me. I love Ramp and Brainmath too, they've got to many good labels that lot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIdzqO5tKO8

Wonder if T.Williams will have a release on Night Slugs, he's on the comp but it's with L-Vis 1990 and he's a massive weak link in the roster as a producer, quality DJ/label guy though.

I've been suprised how quite Night Slugs have been this year, we're almost half way through and only had an album and one white label from Pearson Sound it feels like they've slowed down a lot.

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

I guess there'll be the Jam City album at some point this year. Possibly something from Kingdom too

Number None, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

i know bok bok felt he wanted to devote a bit of time to his own productions by the end of last year.

i think t.williams is a fucking great producer - "heartbeat" is one of the pinnacles of everything happening around the scene

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

oh i guess you meant l-vis was the weak link tho, misread!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I <3 T.WIlliams he's amazing.

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

I think Jacques Greene and flopson should rename themselves Jacques Greene in MTL and flopson in MTL, respectively. Then people will know they're from Montreal. (Although tbh, I thought flopson was from either Edmonton or Calgary, whichever one rennavate isn't from.)

al b. surly! (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

actually this mix is kind of amazing

6. Ikonika - PR812

and the vip version of "arpjam"!!

Right now, I really want a T-shirt that says "Ikonika SUMMER MIX!!!"

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 05:23 (twelve years ago) link

the build in this just kind of ruled my mind for a few moments.

whenever the vein was to throb (the table is the table), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 05:59 (twelve years ago) link

I thought Lone were just another Boards of Canada soundalike - am I wrong?

Evil Eau (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 09:53 (twelve years ago) link

He's like a dancier BOC basically

Number None, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 10:10 (twelve years ago) link

Lone is closer to the Black Dog than Boards of Canada, everything I've heard isn't really like the latter at all.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:13 (twelve years ago) link

Well his first album was basically a BOC homage - hip-hop drums pared with analog synths. The recent stuff has the same nostalgic vibe but with more of a 90's techno underpinning.

Number None, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:20 (twelve years ago) link

I must have the first album as I'd filed him next to Freescha. So I might need to check this out. Never really got into the Black Dog but am a massive fan of Plaid, so...

Evil Eau (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:30 (twelve years ago) link

Lone's latest album is more in the B12/Stasis/As One/Likeminded vein of 90s UK "intelligent" techno as Vahid alluded to back thread, and well worth checking out

Snámh dá Én (missingNO), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:35 (twelve years ago) link

i say "latest" but I think it came out last year. didn't get around to checking his latest thing on R & S but samples sound pretty great, rave stabs and samples and floaty pads and bleeps

Snámh dá Én (missingNO), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:41 (twelve years ago) link

also i think he shares his name with a beloved ilxor who's sadly been rather quiet of late

Snámh dá Én (missingNO), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:43 (twelve years ago) link

lone is 808 state

PR812...like, can i plz have this track standalone right now?

This could stand in as a description for basically any UK-based producer's releases in the past 12 months.

turns out jacques greene is a friend of a close friend of mine

flopson, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 23:48 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, MTL is a small place for a city of 3 million. (Well, 1.5 million in the city proper.) Even smaller when limited by age and music-scene.

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 12 May 2011 01:49 (twelve years ago) link

On topic, the Ikonika mix is lovely.

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 12 May 2011 01:50 (twelve years ago) link

also his name is not jacques greene

flopson, Thursday, 12 May 2011 02:15 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, well, yeah. But talking about Ph1l via his real life name seems a bit rude. He went to such lengths initially to be all mysterious about it, distinguish it from his old moniker, etc. etc.

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 12 May 2011 02:44 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, we refer to The-Dream as Terius for lolz but it's not like we go around talking about Tremaine Neverson or Sara Abdel-Hamid's Summer Mix or whatever.
