Cross of Iron worth watching?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 26 April 2013 17:07 (ten years ago) link

cross of iron is a weird movie. Definitely pretty harsh and has a particularly surreal carnivalesque absurdity of war ending.

coburn is good, as is schell. I don't remember much of the plot but its anything but generic. Strange movie.

Did not like Straw Dogs. Sort of like Death Wish in the countryside but with artistic pretensions.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 16 August 2016 19:53 (seven years ago) link

tKE is a funny mix so far: subtle agonies&quiddities of toxic masculinity solo and in gangs PLUS thudding do-you-see ironies re the ruthless crappiness pf bureaucracies PLUS high-end idealisation of the nobility and healing powers of culturally appropriated martial arts

duvall good, caan good, think the last film i watched partially set in san francisco was the hulk

mark s, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

bohemian san francisco as mise en scene is reminding me of armistead maupin; the airport ninja-assassin attack scene was more like airplane

weirdly pleased to discover that burt young (who plays mac) is a painter as well as an actor

the suisun bay reserve fleet scenes are (a) kind of amazing, as an idea for a setting*, and (b) a whole bunch of clumsily shot, culturally goofy ninja stupidness

*actually the only thing i remember from the last time i saw this, maybe 35 years ago?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 October 2017 03:22 (six years ago) link

when he was good, he was SOOOO good. Ride the High Country def a career highlight, and one that I hadn't seen until last year

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 15:09 (six years ago) link

At worst it's rambling, but (Cable Hogue is) still so damn amiable -- it's like Peckinpah doing Altman.

and he's not very good at it. Great ending tho.

If they move…POLL ‘em!

i would think Alfredo Garcia would win this on a repoll but the turnout on the original has me wondering where the current popular reassessment of his works has leveled out at.

Can't remember if I voted but for me it's The Wild Bunch followed by Ride the High Country. I kind of like Straw Dogs but just the idea of it sort of creeps me out.

L.H.O.O.Q. Jones (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 10 July 2022 01:30 (one year ago) link

to this day my main memory of Pat Garrett is a scene where Dylan's Alias is naming canned goods in the background.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Sunday, 10 July 2022 01:57 (one year ago) link

Pat Garrett was my favorite back in the day but now I don't remember much about it... it's been at least 25 years since I saw most of these. Nowadays I'd be most interested in revisiting High Country and Major Dundee.
