It looks like it's working - but i can't find you! help!

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 23:17 (nineteen years ago) link

No, I can't find Julia either. Hang on, we're sorting it out.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 23:18 (nineteen years ago) link

it didn't seem to sort out, but we should totally play another time when things aren't acting wonky!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 23:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Well. That didn't work. Chris, Ken, maybe you can explain this - Julia and I were both setting up tables, but we couldn't see each others anywhere. We then decided to find a small table in the existing play area, but the names of the tables she could see were different from the ones I could see! So we couldn't find anywhere to play at all. Wtf?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 23:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Shall we try again another night?

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 23:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, let's. I ended up having a few hands of play Blackjack instead. I like Blackjack.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:04 (nineteen years ago) link

the reason for that is because if you are only registered for play money your on a different server than real money.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:26 (nineteen years ago) link

But ... there were three of us, and none of us could see each other.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 24 February 2005 08:35 (nineteen years ago) link

if some one has registered for only play money and the others are registered for real/play money essentially you are all on different servers. if everyone is registered for real money then you will all be on the same server.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 24 February 2005 11:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Bah. Time to hunt for the driving licence again

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 24 February 2005 12:10 (nineteen years ago) link

But I've played with Julia before, Chris. It's a bugger though.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:06 (nineteen years ago) link

To be honest, I think *everyone* on pokerroom.com was having trouble last night - watching the lobby chat window, lots and *lots* of people were complaning that the Holdem tables were almost all down.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 24 February 2005 20:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Bump - when's our next for-money game going to be?

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 27 February 2005 14:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm going to be playing tournament poker on LadbrokesPoker.com this afternoon, if anyone's to be around. But I'd be up to take your cash this evening as well.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 27 February 2005 15:51 (nineteen years ago) link

when you playing dom? i might join you in a tournament

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I tend to play two table NL Holdem, I've not finished out of the money in six goes so far (I've not finished in the top of any of them, but still). I'm in the $3 NL mass tourney at the moment though, just to see what the major tournaments play like.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Vital question - in online poker (specifically pokeroom.com), how many virtual decks are used in each game?

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:25 (nineteen years ago) link

1

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:35 (nineteen years ago) link

otherwise you can get 5 of a kind?

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Makes sense. I'm down in a play game right now, but hopefully people are playing properly enough to teach me something.

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Play games are a lot more reckless than real games, people don't go all in on a whim like that when cash is on the table (apart from those guys just there to make the numbers up in tournaments. All in on 67 suited, good work fellow).

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:05 (nineteen years ago) link

i got 4th twice today at a 10 people tournament on ladbrokes precisely because people went all in with 67 suited and got lucky :(

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:10 (nineteen years ago) link

So how much do these tournaments cost to enter? what's the most you can win/lose?

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I got fucked over on a $30 tournament today because I went all in on KA, the other guy had a pair of tens, king on the flop, ace on the turn, and ten on the river. Unfuckingbelievable.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:19 (nineteen years ago) link

the cheap ones are like $5+1 mark. if you win through a 10 people you get $25. 2nd = $15 3rd = $10. there are variations with more players and more money etc.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:48 (nineteen years ago) link

So you spend $5 - what does the +1 mean?

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:53 (nineteen years ago) link

$5 goes to the prize money, $1 is rake.

so you pay $6 to be in. but if you add up the total prize money (25+15+10) is only $50 from 10 people

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:57 (nineteen years ago) link

i think pokerroom actually is $5+$0.5 i.e. even better.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I was in a tourney this afternoon ($2 buy in, about 240 people entered), & was sucked out. I had pocket 8s (one club), three middling clubs were flopped. Dude had a 10 of clubs, and an red Ace. I went all in, he called, and a club came up on the turn. Would've won otherwise. I was k-pissed.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 February 2005 00:05 (nineteen years ago) link

FYI - there's a $5.00 + $.50 no-limit Texas Holdem tourney on PokerRoom.calm that's due to start @ 7:50 PM EST.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 February 2005 00:15 (nineteen years ago) link

i've been playing too many real money games lately. played at a friends this weekend, crushing everything in my path and taking home $400

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Monday, 28 February 2005 11:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Nice one, "The Nuts". Are you friends getting wary about playing against you?

I am still not disciplined or perecptive enough at this game. Definitely up for a tournament one day, though - would the logistics work for us all to join a tournament table at the same time?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 11:55 (nineteen years ago) link

we just need to be there at the same time and join an empty table.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 28 February 2005 12:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Perhaps we should decided on a time/place? Tonight at 10pm GMT? They seem to announce the tourney times about 6 hours in advance on pokerroom.com.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 13:25 (nineteen years ago) link

you mean we should all enter a multi-table tournament (i was thinking just a single table thing which you can start almost all the time)?

multitable (the ones they announce 6 hours ahead) sounds fun too though.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 28 February 2005 14:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Single table sounds fun too - well up for that. Maybe we could try both? I guess in the multi-table format you can't choose which table you're at.

Though, don't the casino make much less money from tournaments? If $5 + $1 only gets them $10 in total?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:04 (nineteen years ago) link

it's a cheaper way to play in a way. but not everyone are up for money every hand games. Also, they're effectively taking a 17% (if it's $5+1) rake rather than 3% that they do in money per hand games.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:21 (nineteen years ago) link

huh? I thought you paid your $6 and that was IT until the tournament was over?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Unless they take $1 per hand... but then who do they take it from? I'm confused again. Can someone explain it all in a paragraph

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:28 (nineteen years ago) link

So, this evening? I might give it a go anyway but it's much more fun playing with you guys*

*this includes you, Julia, Ste, Daver, Caitlin, Barry, Jams, okay?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

well if you pay $6, and they take $1 for the prize money, that's taking 16% right?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Ken, I understand that. But in the regular games, they take the rake EVERY HAND whereas, presumably, they only take it once in these tournaments?

Maybe I'll just have a look at the site and see if it explains everything.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Anyway, anyone up for play or real action tonight?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Fuck, what a dire night. Decided to use real money. First off, 399th out of 593 - not too disgraceful, I guess. Then three single-table tourneys - 10th, 9th and 8th. I suck.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Dom took a first place on a two table $5 buy in tournament today! Some nice playing by me, some retarded playing by various Scandinavians, I was down to 600 chips with eight players on the table at one point, and then the tide turned. The final all-in saw my AA against his AQ. There's nothing better than seeing those cards come up.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I've been hosed in all the multi-table tourneys - I go all-in w/ pocket 7s, the other guy has pocket 9s. Or I get sucked out. Or I make a dumb move. I am trying my luck @ the single-table things now. I phear I am now an addict. Pray for me.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, 300 player tournaments probably aren't the way to make a living off this thing. Stick to 20/10 player games, make a few notes on the players, you'll notice some of the same names pop up.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:28 (nineteen years ago) link

i love the ones who come on trash talking and then get pwn3d.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh god, the Yanks on pokerroom.com are dreadful with the trash talk.

My top trick is a well-timed "Call him you pussy" when a mid-tabled player has just been offered an all-in against a top-tabled player. He won't call him, he hates you, and he'll call anything you put against him for the next half hour to reassert his masculinity. Beautiful.
