actually...

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

USSF verdict from October 7, 2010:

"The acrobatic or “flip” throw-in is not by itself an infringement so long as it is performed in a manner which meets the requirements of Law 15."

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

Why wouldn't it be valid if both feet are on the ground?

For one throb of the (Michael White), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

it's doesn't break the throw-in law, but i'm pretty sure it has been ruled out specifically by clarifying directives in the past, possibly as timewasting. i think it first surfaced in britain in the 70s?

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:12 (twelve years ago) link

cf. this incident, which is still technically legal according to the relevant "Laws", but will get you a yellow card if you do it in the UK following a directive.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

sorry this incident: http://defenestrated.typepad.com/defenestrated/2008/01/the-free-kick-t.html

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:15 (twelve years ago) link

They say you can only touch the ball with one foot... if a player does the exact same thing but using only one foot, would that be allowed? Like scoop up the ball with one foot and let the other player strike it?

Jibe, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

that's fine, yeah.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

One footed version happened not long ago - can't remember who did it though.

reverse the jelly baby of the neutron flow (onimo), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

ok then I don't really understand why you'd get booked for doing the exact same thing using your two feet.

Jibe, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

I misremembered - similar but not the same

i think the objection is that its really just lifting the ball directly up in the air (in a way that the one foot version isn't) that it turns an indirect freekick into what is effectively a direct freekick.

i don't find this very convincing myself, but it's the same rule for everyone.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:59 (twelve years ago) link

ok thx, I agree that it's not very convincing.

r|t|c, Thursday, 9 June 2011 11:51 (twelve years ago) link

Oh that penalty was put in the fluke goals thread i think. it's very silly. and always funny.

anyways, i think the italian commission or whatever ruled that the penalty shouldn't have been counted so they're replaying the match or something like that?
