Man, I didn't like "Time's Up" at all when it came out - I thought it was thoroughly tuneless, rockless, funkless and humourless. In fact, Living Colour were my least favourite of all those "black rock bands" that were getting all the press back in '89-91 so I never bothered with anything after the "Biscuits" ep. But at the time, my tastes were changing along with the decade, so who knows how they'd sound to me today.

Have they aged well? Are the Doug Wimbish years worth hearing?

The first two records have aged ok. The grooves are a little stiff and (as HOOS noted) the production a little glossy, but they're still great rock albums. Stain is a little worse for the wear, but it still all right if you can still listen to Rolling, Prong or COC

Rollins, not Rolling

Myonga - so you liked 24-7 Spyz better? ... Seriously - I saw 'Time's Up' tour at Town and Country club in London and they ROCKED . None of these hold up over Bad Brains, but hey - I still throw all three on the turntable from time to time.

The first concert I went to as an "adult" was the "Time's Up" tour and it was fucking massive and amazing.

you really coulda played it off like there was really some 90s funk metal band called Rolling, i don't think anyone would have been the wiser

"Oh yeah, Rolling! They toured with Urban Dance Squad, right?"

I wonder if Psychefunkapus would have had a better career arc if they named themselves Rolling

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 12 December 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

They could have named themselves Buttbangin' Yr Dead Grandma and that still would have been a better name.

Corey Glover played Judas in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar that rolled through town in the last couple of years. Would be awesome if he incorporated "Cult of Personality" into the show.

"Cult" alone makes me want to vote for Vivid, but I remember really loving Times Up.

Times Up for the fake nigerian groove...Solace of You, I think.

the one that came in a red cd box and went for the Tackhead sound - not just the joining of Doug - but didn't Adrian be a part of the production on a few tracks ?
tis buried deep in the archive, and not overly bothered, as i'm not so sure i would enjoy it now.
amiriteorrong ?

I like all three albums listed above, and even have fond memories of Biscuits. I thought they were awful when I saw them at Lollapalooza, though.

stain, in parts (auslander in particular), still sounds pretty good - dense, sinewy, explosive. the other two are fairly lightweight by comparison, and haven't aged as well. plus, for me they have an unpleasant synaesthetic dayglo effect as a result of repeated exposure to the videos for 'type' and 'cult of personality'.

I would probably not want to go back to Time's Up in full, in order--I'd cherrypick--but a lot of it still sounds good to me. (It's what I voted for, obv.)

nine years pass...

Listening to these guys lately, esp. the three huge tracks on Times Up: pride, type, and information overload. So fucking good.
