i know its a month old but im not sure i get the appeal of that 'brothers gonna work it out edit' -- sounds like someone's fucking with the mixer & playing another track on top of it at the wrong speed. plus the greatest part of the original is the crazy tom pattern in the drums. maybe im not 'getting it' tho

Really into that Eddie C album. Space Shuttle is incredible. It sounds really familiar too, is it a sample of Ash Ra or Gottsching?

i think it's "shuttle cock"

Oh yeah, that's definitely it. Thanks!

speaking of "ShuttleCock", anyone willing to share the Private Tapes version with? Lost mine in a crash last year and can't track it down.

andrew m., Thursday, 5 May 2011 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

brother's gonna work it out revenge edit is great because it's trippy and cinemascopic and pretty dramatic when the strings kick in towards the end. It's pretty far out from the OG as far as edits go.

blank, Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:46 (twelve years ago) link

totally otm

perhaps you can explain it, gr8080

deej i was just clowning cause you used the "maybe i dont get it" qualifier twice in your post ;]

sounds like someone's fucking with the mixer & playing another track on top of it at the wrong speed.

imo it abandons the bombastic soundtracky shift from the first part to the 2nd part of the original and in turn recreates a slow, building thing thats more ~atmosphere~ than energy. blank's totally otm on how when the strings drop in, they're dramatic, but imo not in a build-and-release way: more sunrise than atom bomb.

plus the greatest part of the original is the crazy tom pattern in the drums.

agreed, but i love how he kills them and instead replicates that rhythm with that really tight kick drum sound that repeats over and over.

best kind of re-edit imo

"Sunrise" is pretty much the perfect way to describe the Revenge's edits.

EDB, Friday, 6 May 2011 13:17 (twelve years ago) link

For whatever reason, I've been ambivalent about Eddie C (it probably has to do with some sort of narcissism of small differences that comes with being an Eddie B and also being Canadian), but to hell with that, this is incredible:

Love it, I did a full on two hour 110 too 130 bpm set on the radio last month it was good fun and that track pretty much set me on the path to explore it more on the decks. Not really into the disco side of things, but love the vibe the slow tempo can bring to other sounds.

I am absolutely obsessed with Matthew Kyle at the moment. Really captures that awesome throbbing intensity vibe that I love about the best of this stuff but with this really voluptuous deployment of soul as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUE2rH14uX0

He's got some awesome DJ mixes available on his soundcloud also. Some of the most consistently beautiful mixes I've heard:

Spent the weekend listening to Matthew Kyle. Top notch, esp the disconnected mix.

"Honey Sugar" is his most played track on soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/matthew_kyle/honey-sugar . Here's the Tyrone Davis song it edits, new to me:

seems both mark-e and the revenge have abandoned this sound now, ive done gigs with both recently and wasnt really feeling what theyre plying, slightly harder and faster with none vocals or cheeky samples that made their names. Perhaps a reaction to getting bigger gigs?

straightola, Thursday, 8 September 2011 15:19 (twelve years ago) link

i think it probably is a reaction to those bigger gigs, and it's weird that all the interesting aspects of their earlier sounds keep getting washed out over time as they play at bigger and bigger clubs. it's not like it's impossible to draw out a faster song and treat it in a similar way to all the slomo stuff, so abandoning that sound really doesn't make much sense to me.

idk if lovebirds fit this category but this one is a nice example of how to ramp up those bpms and keep things idiosyncratic...

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Thursday, 8 September 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

what did these old revenge records sound like?

looks kind of like house-influenced big beat or vice versa. maybe they are just moving back to that sound now that edits are kind of passe.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

i think one of things abt a lot of these tracks is that while they seem DJ-oriented i dont get the impression that being a good DJ is necessarily reflective of being a good producer of songs like this. that at some level, they are sort of at odds

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

i mean thats at some level a 'well duh' kind of thing but i think its partic true with the slow motion stuff

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

what do you mean? i have some questions about what you're getting at.

what seems dj-oriented about these tracks? what makes tracks dj oriented (as opposed to merely seeming like it). what makes a good dj? a good producer of songs like this? how are they at odds?

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

i guess what i mean is, there are producers, and there are DJs, and producers who make songs people like end up becoming DJs, and that while they may have DJ'd before producing now they are suddenly booking more & more (and bigger) gigs, and suddenly they find that certain kinds of songs work better at certain times in sets, and that all-slow-motion-all-the-time can actually be pretty monotonous, so they start 'finding themselves' as DJs and subsequently lose the particular magic/distinctiveness of their producer-ly days as they start diversifying. Something is gained, something lost

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

this is a generalization

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

i havent seen any new Revenge sets or anything

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

oh i see this is not specific to "slow motion house"

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

well doesnt have to be but seems like it could be applicable in this case?

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link
